Tournament Smogon Snake Draft 2018: NU Discussion

moon predicts because why not:

Hootie [MAMB] vs. Tangelo [SERP]

Hootie in general already has experience in the snake field vs Tangy's debut in the tournament and while tangy can certainly catch his relatively standard builds of guard with some innovative tech I believe the gap in experience is going to be hard for him to cross.

Hootie [MAMB] vs. Eternally [LEVI]

Eternally imo is one the better players in the Moon Division and in the snake field in general, he's brought solid builds in the past two games and played well, and Hootie simply will a have hard time coming up with an equalizer. quack seems to falter against at less standard builds and Hootie could very well exploit that and put down an underdog win.

Realistic Waters [ASTR] vs. Eternally [LEVI]

waters has frequently relied on standard bulky offense builds so far, which is unusual for waters who is normally creative enough to bring an innovation that puts a dent in standard balance, but if he can get motivated enough to bring an innovation against Eternally then this could be one the most interesting games to watch in the round and could easily go either way.

Realistic Waters [ASTR] vs. Rodriblutar [TAIP]

Again waters will have to squeeze out of the standard builds he's been using if he wants any chance to beat Rodriblutar. Rodri has always been unpredictable and excels against standard balance cores that waters tends to rely on, since he can just exploit BroLix + Incineroar shit with unorthodox stalls he's brought in Phase 1 and definitely has a clear advantage in the matchup

Tangelo [SERP] vs. Rodriblutar [TAIP]

This is more difficult to decide since both players are likely to bring 6 unmons with 6 unsets but Rodri has ground experience and innovation compared to Tangy and Tangy will have to come up against heavy odds to tilt the match in his favor.

Overall really hyped to see some of the interesting matches play out and even more hyped to see Tangelo play, good luck to everyone.

One of the things you learn with experience is the only real number you want to get out of this is usage %. Winrate actually means nothing, because while the mon could've been effective in the game, it could also have done absolutely nothing, so it's an unfair measurement. Another thing you'll learn is that usage % doesn't necessarily equate to viability. While Silvally-Steel is more known than Alolan Exeggutor, Alolan Exeggutor is definitely more viable than Silvally-Steel right now, and while they are relatively not comparable, the amount of offensive pressure Alolan Exeggutor puts up is insane, almost to the level of Vanilluxe. The thing is, Alolan Exeggutor just hasn't been picked up by the masses yet.

I hope that answers some of your concerns.

Snake is fun so far!!
I think we can debunk a few misunderstandings with the games played so far:

1. Steelix is still the most splashable stealth rocker
2. Xatu still runs the metagame what's new
3. I was wrong and Aerodactyl is good
4. I was right and Comfey sucks
5. Heliolisk is hard to prep for

Tangy [SERP] (40) vs Kushalos [NAGA] (60) - I feel as if Kushalos is just a more experienced and polished version of Tangy; both have wild tendencies that can be practical or punishing depending on the specific match-up and team and both have high ceiling/low floor in the game. Kushalos has at least learned enough about himself as a player to where his main worries will be contained to handling the late-game optimally and he has a knack for making aggressive midgrounds/predictions to give him the upper hand earlier on. Tangy's gameplay leaves a lot of us scratching our heads at times, but when he breaks through he can be one of the toughest opponents out there. The thing is that I do not feel comfortable picking him against Kushalos given the smaller sample size he has and Kushalos's track record given this variance in level of play he shows, even within individual games.

Nintendi [BUSH] (49) vs Realistic Waters [ASTR] (51) - RW is the better "NUer" whereas Nintendi is the better "player". Normally I do not side with "mainers", but Nintendi's gameplay has been about as unpredictable as it gets and Realistic Waters is also a bit all over the place. The lone factor determining my prediction here ultimately was track record in this tournament itself, which leads me to favor RW slightly. His win vs Rodri doesn't mean a ton b/c it was essentially a wash due to the Sceptile MU, but he has shown some strong signs and he knows the intricacies of the tier better. If Nintendi takes a Rozes idea and team, he should be at least 50/50 in this match-up, however.

big shout outs to Finchinator, Kiyo, Tangelo, and quziel for recording this with me! Here are my predictions for this phase:

Tangy vs Kushalos - I think I have underestimated thus far how well tangy plays in a tournament setting, so it will be really fun to see how he performs in this match. While you could argue that Tangy did get a bit of hax in his match versus Hootie, I still think he played that match up to the best of his ability. He pretty much lost to Vivillon if he wasn't super careful throughout the entire match. Either way, in tangy's other game vs Rodribulator, he made some fire plays, including switching in Xatu on Vaporeon when it clicked Toxic. Such plays give me so much more faith tangy, but I do think Kushalos will still win this game. While Kush did lose to Lax, he originally won that game, but accidentally choked it away. Of course, we all have off days, and shortly after that he went on to win the second cycle of NUL, proving his excellence (playing 5 games total in the finals!). Kushalos has always packed the heat in the past and has been doing so this Snake draft, and if he can do that in this game I think he will certainly out prep tangy and creative building style. I also think Kushalos is just overall the better player, with more tournament experience than tangy. I think these elements together will secure Kushalos the win in this match up.

Hantsuki vs Eternally - I think Eternally's 3-1 record and Hantsuki's 1-3 record is enough to safely say who is going to win this match, but simply from the fact that Eternally has been building and playing better says that he'll win this match. However, that doesn't mean that Hantsuki doesn't have a chance. One thing I like about Hantsuki is his use of untraditional mons such as Mismagius and Pinsir. I think if he can make some good teams with such mons I think he will definitely have a chance versus Eternally, who can be caught off guard as he generally uses builds more close to the standard side of the scale. Also, while Eternally did not bring Steelix in his last game, Eternally definitely has a trend going on, and if Hantsuki can pick up on that he can prep appropriately. Overall though, with Eternally's great amount of experience and his overall ability to play better, I do believe Eternally will pull through and win this game.

Nintendi vs Realistic Waters - no comment here, I think RW has been doing better than I first assumed, and I think RW's more standard-looking teams will be able to out-do Nintendi's super creative teams.

I was watching eternally vs hantsuki today and it came to a point in the game that I thought was really interesting and complex. Eternally ended up catching a lucky break and winning, but I felt like even after an unfortunate HJK miss there was definitely a missed chance for Hantsuki to win. With haters Finchinator and Hootie (telling me the game was always eternally's) and my own disappointment at my choke vs kush driving me forward, I set out soul searching.
And thus, my adventure to find the choke began :psyduck:

FIND THAT CHOKE: ETERNALLY VS HANTSUKI
I should mention that I am using average rolls for everything, and I take into account rocks damage and black sludge without mentioning it in the text. We will begin our journey on turn 26, when Hantsuki read Eternally's defog with Whimsicott and switched in his Incineroar to block. The turn that followed is what I believe was the mistake. Here's the general situation:

TEAM ETERNALLY
: 27%
: 42%
: 76%
: 74%
: 72%

TEAM HANTSUKI
: 57%
: 83%
: 100%

Things of note that are known at this point:
Specs Heliolisk, CB Sneasel, SD Samurott, Moonlight SDef Vileplume, also rocks are down
Pivot Incineroar, Taunt Toxic Golbat, ZFighting Heliolisk

What ended up happening in the game was Incineroar clicked U-turn to finish off Whimsicott and ended up with the matchup of Golbat vs Heliolisk. In this situation, knock off was actually the best play. Both scenarios for clicking u-turn end up with a loss. The path with going into Golbat was already explored so let's look at going Heliolisk instead briefly (I won't go all the way). Eternally could go into either Sneasel or Vileplume. Vileplume gets volt switched on into Golbat, and after a sludge bomb exchange (where Eternally sacks plume), Golbat ends up at low enough health for Heliolisk to clean the game with Hyper Voice paired with Sneasel. Sneasel also wins the game by clicking knocking off the berry on Incineroar (and a similar match to the one that played out in the game happens).

So lets click Knock Off. Now, turn 27 looks something like this:

: 62% vs
: 57%

This is the pivotal turn. In every line of plays, Hantsuki will lose guaranteed if he loses a 50/50 or some other unfortunate thing occurs (rolls, effect spore, etc). Eternally's options are: Liquidation to kill the Incineroar, zmegahorn to hit the predicted Heliolisk, or doubling to Vileplume on the u-turn.

Doubling to Vileplume actually wins if you catch it u-turning as the situation ends up as 50% Vileplume vs 83% Golbat, and no matter how it plays out Golbat will end up at ~66% and a dead Vileplume (a losing scenario for Hantsuki). That is, unless you PP stall the Vileplume! PP stalling Vileplume optimally ends up with a 94% Golbat and a dead flower (but in general playing it like this is a slightly eternally-favored game as it involves guessing when stuff is coming in when you are at high health)! This scenario is playable for Hantsuki as Golbat can survive a volt switch from Heliolisk at this health, and think Hantsuki could pilot this to a victory.

The former two options, on the other hand, require Hantsuki to guess the 50/50 correctly. Since Eternally has used his built up karma already, we shall assume Hantsuki guess right. If Hantsuki reads the water move correctly, this is yet again an even game, with either the 83% Golbat coming in and playing a similar line as above or 57% Incineroar coming in. Incineroar coming in would be a choke though, as a weakened Incineroar leaves you little hope of beating a crash happy Sneasel.

Reading the zmegahorn properly is my favorite line to analyze as it leads to a fun line to find. If Hantsuki reads the zmegahorn correctly and stays in to u-turn on the Samurott, Incineroar's berry ends up popping and Heliolisk comes in, and then Eternally must switch into Vileplume on the Volt Switch.

In this scenario, there are 2 options for Hantsuki: Golbat or Incineroar. Going into Golbat ends up the same way as the other Golbat vs Plume set ups go with an eternally-favored endgame. The play to find is the Incineroar play, which leads to 2 possible lines:

: 52% vs
: 58%

Line 1: Foddering Vileplume to Incineroar. This line ends up being decided by a Heliolisk speed tie. The situation goes into 30% Heliolisk vs 43% Incineroar, and hard switching Hantsuki's Heliolisk onto the specs hyper voice (surf loses always, volt switch is a complicated line that ends up with a lot of Sneasel 50/50s on Golbat and Heliolisk). If Eternally decides to not try to win the tie, the game ends up with Hantsuki winning. He would have to sack his Samurott, and go into Sneasel. Clicking Pursuit loses to Golbat coming and in and spamming toxic into roost to get up to full health, and knock off loses by bringing Incineroar in on the Sneasel down and KOing it with flare blitz. Eternally is left with specs Heliolisk with no thunderbolt after he kills the Incineroar with volt switch, who fails to beat 83% Golbat most of the time. If the tie is accepted, Eternally easily wins with Heliolisk if he wins, and Hantsuki wins with Golbat + Heliolisk if he wins. 50/50 or Hantsuki wins usually.

Line 2: Switching into Samurott on the flare blitz. In this line Samurott lives with about 3% and torrent is activated while Incineroar ends up at about 50%. Another 50/50 ensues involving Incineroar vs Samurott. If Hantsuki guesses the water move right, Heliolisk has a few options. It can kill Samurott with volt switch and the matchup will end as Heliolisk vs Incineroar (a win for eternally as he volt switches -> sacks Samurott -> volt switches again into Sneasel ->Icicle Crashes to win), or hyper voices and plays a 50/50 game with Sneasel pursuit. The player who misses this 50/50 will lose to the other players Heliolisk (+ Golbat in Eternally's case). If Hantsuki guesses the water move wrong, Heliolisk eats a megahorn and ends up at 25%. From here, sacking Samurott and trapping with Sneasel is a guaranteed victory for Eternally.

If Hantsuki guesses the megahorn correctly, then he leaves in Incineroar and u-turns into Heliolisk. At this point, Incineroar is at 30%, and Samurott is dead. Eternally has a few options here. He can go into Vileplume, Sneasel, or Heliolisk. Heliolisk vs Heliolisk is still a speed tie, and the winner likely wins. Sneasel is a little more intricate as while Pursuit can end the game if he guess right, Icicle Crash also leads into a possible victory. Incineroar would come in on the Icicle Crash and take ~14%. From here, Eternally can switch out into whatever he wants to sack, and spam Icicle Crash to win. If Hantsuki guessed wrong and Incineroar ate a water move, he still loses to Sneasel.

A possible path to Hantsuki's victory lies in Golbat. Golbat is safe into both liquidation and megahorn, as is faster than Samurott always. First, the best case: Hantsuki brings Golbat in on megahorn and ends up with 3% Samurott vs 77% Golbat. From here, brave bird is a safe click vs everything and Eternally must sack Samurott. Assuming he aqua jets, this ends with 58% Golbat. Bringing it in on liquidation is worse, but it is still mostly okay as Eternally really does not want to click aqua jet and allow roost, so worst case it is a 44% Golbat after recoil.

However, neither of these plays win for Hantsuki, as a Golbat below 81% will die to volt switch from Heliolisk. And thus we have a few conditions to meet. We need to either a. have Golbat above 80% in on a down (which is pretty much impossible here), or b. keep Golbat alive and get in Heliolisk. The safest way to do this is to spam roost and get Heliolisk in on a water move or SD. If Eternally ever guesses wrong and megahorns, Hantsuki is favored as Golbat is now above volt switch range, so Hantsuki is probably favored in this guessing game despite the possibility of liquidation defense drops. So the 2 possibilities are 3% Samurott vs Heliolisk or >80% Golbat on a down.

TEAM HANTSUKI

We know condition b works, but is meeting condition a enough? If Heliolisk gets in without a >80% Golbat in the back, the possible lines are foddering Samurott or switching in Vileplume. Sneasel will have enough sacks to try and wear Incineroar down (sack Sam to volt switch -> go Sneasel on the Golbat -> crash on the Incin -> try to fodder Vileplume -> eventually bring back in Sneasel on down -> crash Incin -> repeat as you have 3 switchins max with Sneasel because of rocks). This line is actually a loss for Eternally given average rolls, as Incineroar will be living with 1% after 4 icicle crashes. Eternally can try to play this differently; A series like Plume on volt into Golbat -> sack Samurott will lead 2 other lines of either trying to guess pursuit vs icicle crash correctly with Sneasel vs Golbat, or Heliolisk coming in. Heliolisk coming in vs Hantsuki's Golbat is an always losing scenario for Hantsuki. What this means is that in order to try to grab a win in this line, Hantsuki must predict this Samurott sack and double into his own Heliolisk. At this point, Eternally can go into Vileplume, Heliolisk, or Sneasel. Sneasel leads to a series of 50/50s (crashing on a switch leads to flare blitz claiming a kill on Plume -> Heliolisk coming in to volt -> sacking Golbat -> Incin u-turn to kill Sneasel -> a final Heliolisk speed tie), and Heliolisk leads to a worse than 50/50 outcome for Eternally as specs hyper voice fails to kill 100% Heliolisk. So what about Vileplume? Since Eternally would be bringing a mon in on a down, there would be no leftovers recovery, meaning Vileplume would be in at 40%. This is not enough health to survive Hyper Voice on average. Now it would be Sneasel + Helio vs Helio + Incin + Golbat, and the scenario is a single 50/50 on pursuit vs crash or a speed tie, as there are no sacks avaliable to try trapping again. So the most optimally played line for Eternally is bringing in Sneasel, as he has 2 chances to win the 50/50 (though if he loses the first one clicking pursuit, he will lose), so this is somewhat eternally favored.

We have reached a conclusion. For Hantsuki to have a >50% chance to win, Golbat must be at >80%, and this scenario is only really possible if Eternally stops clicking Liquidation. The verdict? Played optimally, this is a very slightly Eternally favored endgame taking into account icicle crash accuracy, while it is a true 50/50 or win for Hantsuki if played less that optimally (though there are WAY more opportunities for Hantsuki to choke this than Eternally as 1 wrong turn is a loss). So yes, Hantsuki did indeed have a (kinda obscure) path to victory.

:psygrump:

It's very possible I missed some lines or screwed up some ideas, I have been looking at this end game for about 5 hours now and I might be going crazy. If you think I missed something, hit me up. Also, this really shouldn't be viewed as an attack on either player; I simply did this analysis because I think this endgame was much more subtle than a lot of people thought it was, and I think it could help players who aren't at the top level get an idea on how to analyze games.

***I found a boo boo, 14% * 4 is less that 58%, so crashing the Incineroar over and over is actually NOT a winning play for Eternally most of the time (especially taking into account accuracy).

[SERP] Tangelo vs Stone_Cold [COBR]
[LEVI] Eternally vs rozes [BUSH]
[NAGA] Kushalos vs Realistic Waters [ASTR]

These are the week 2 match-ups for this stage of Snake! Very cool to see Stone_Cold back in and rozes making his NU debut this Snake. Excited to see the teams and plays of each of these players -- good luck all!

vs

Going to recap week 1 games starting with Tangy vs Kush. Viewing the team preview here kush seems to have the more generic build with SD Incineroar, Rhydon as his rocker, Rotom as his form of hazard control, and defensive backbone of plume + vapo as well as the unorthodox Ditto acting as a glue to the team. Tangy is bringing Sunnyzard here as well as a pseudo-BroLix + Xatu defensive backbone with lix as his rocker, the last two slots being dedicated to a Whimsicott + Heliolisk VoltTurn core. Early game Tangy manages to outplay kush and lay down rocks while denying kush the ability to set up his own hazards. Turn 8 Steelix reveals Sunny Day which allows tangy to kill Rotom with Slowking's sun-boosted Fire Blasts and revenge kill Incineroar with zard, as well as killing off Ditto for good measure. From there on the game turns into a PP-Stalling fest as tangy is unable to break Kushalos's Rhydon + Plume+ Vapo defensive backbone and kush can't inflict any meaningful damage onto Slowking. In the end however kush manages to PP stall Slowking and pull through the match with a win, very interesting game that could have gone either way.

vs

Continuing with HANTSUKI vs eternally. eternally brought a relatively standard squad around sd z-megahorn samurott, Rhydon + Plume is the team's defensive backbone alongside a Lisk + Whimsicott VoltTurn core and Sneasel as a filler. Hantsuki brings a less conventional team with a Drudd + Steelvally backbone, Pivot Incineroar, breaker Medicham and what is likely to be a variant of Toxic + Taunt Golbat. Early game eternally plays aggressively with his Heliolisk to wear down Drudd and Steelvally, which is obv the best play since Hantsuki doesn't really have anything to punish Volt Switch. Hantsuki however manages to control the hazard game early on, laying down his rocks, crippling Rhydon, and preventing Whimsicott from simply defogging with Incin. Turn 22 is a highlight turn here as Hantsuki reveals Scarf Medicham, but misses the hjk and loses his Medicham, and from there on eternally just plays aggressively and spams Knock Off with Sneasel to remove Incineroar's pinch berry, which paves the way for Heliolisk to clean by clicking Volt Switch two times and killing roar with Surf. Hantsuki def had a chance to win here if he didn't miss hjk Turn 22 and didn't choke Turn 27, although it could be debated that the games was always eternally's from the beginning.

vs

Wrapping up with Nintendi vs Waters. Nintendi brings a fairly standard ferro BO, and the same could be said about waters. Turn 1 both players lead with Passimian, and waters loses the speed tie and gains the momentum. Nintendi goes into Slowbro, and Waters reveals the Specs Magmortar. From here on Waters simply nukes Nintendi's team with Specs Mag, killing of Pass and Sneasel with the surprise factor and a single predict, and Nintendi sturggles to come back from his early game slump. As the game proceeds Specs Magmortar gets 4 kills, which allows Sneasel to pick off the job at this point. This game is notable for waters bringing an innovation against Nintendi's fairly standard builds and capitalizing on that, and if he continues with his run he just might not be 7-0ed by kush this week.

Overall some very interesting games to cover and exited to see how this weeks games roll out, gl to all.

just played vs eternally, ill drop my thoughts on the game here

ill touch up a bit on my prep this week and how i tackled playing the person that has just about every team ive used in the past year, and who i prob play a good handfull of games each week with. i pulled up my trusty visuals and figured that a nice way to tackle his recent building trends would be with a spdef scrafty as i was expecting a vileplume/weezing as the primary fighting resist and this can get by them (figuring his weezing didnt outcreep my scrafty). decided that weezing would be a great partner here as it gives me a nice fighting/fairy switch in, things that scrafty hates seeing. scarf phox helps w/ whims and i wanted speed control that wasnt passimian here so it made a lot of sense. rocker ended up being tort since it can come in on a lo whims and lisk, and i also decided to throw rocks on it as i was not expecting a xatu since he used 4/5 in snake so far. aero was added as a mon that could ohko xatu in case he did bring it, and also gave me pursuit + a rocker that could get it up on things that tort couldnt. last mon added was toise bc spike stack would get annoying, and it also patched up my fwg core.

anyway onto the game

replay

from team preview i expected sets along these lines:

specs|tect 3 atks vanilluxe / zbug sd sandslash / lo cm comfey, hidden power ice|fire / sd iapapa incineroar / lo sceptile / colbur physdef palo

i decided aero lead gives me a good mu vs everything but palo, but since i can just hard tort on it it wasnt a huge deal if i he lead with it. t1 was the only turn i really disagree with the play i made bc rocks was fairly free from my standpoint. i clicked edge bc i was worried he would overpredict me going into tort on palo, or just clicking protect and gaining some kind of advantage. in hindsight even sr on tect, or even losing aero would have been fine considering i would have rocks up and can just go phox on vanilluxe and chip something fairly hard.

on turn 4 i was able to scout his vanilluxe set and it kept me thinking that he was nevermelt ice in some way since that freeze-dry roll wasnt possible from specs.

turns 7/8 i felt fine clicking spin into palo bc it just ended with me ending in torrent which meant i would kill incineroar after stealth rock if he was 0 bulk.

turn 12 i clicked z here bc i thought he would go to incin on a potetial wisp, but with palo dead it basically was going to do a ton too anything anyway since slash wasnt going to risk coming in on a wisp.

turn 17 i locked into edge after considering clicking eq for the reason itll always hit, but i didnt want him to go to sceptile freely afterwards since i was trying to avoid my delphox coming in on rocks as much as possible so i could trick comfey if i needed. on turn 18 if i hit edge i believe i had a near 100% win, since he would have to go comfey to revenge and that lets me scout the set with weezing and have a fairly safe endgame since i can even get away with spinning on incin @ a different point so aero would be able to revenge incin, and phox wouldnt have to take sr damage when it comes in.

turn 19 i choose to sack weezing instead of revenging with phox bc i wanted to keep phox as my sceptile revenge killer + the threat of a trick on comfy.

turn 21 i catch a break and kill the incin, which leads to me praying that he was not hp ice on comfey, or avoiding rolls on tort from a hp fire set. he ends up getting a mid into a high which ends the game, but it was a fun one nevertheless.

I trust eternally's experience and overall higher level of play over tangy's ability to pull an upset. Love tangy, but eternally probably wins.

[NAGA] Kushalos vs rozes [BUSH]
rozes has played all of one game and lost lol. At the end of the day though this call really stems from me feeling Kushalos is the better player, but I wouldn't necessarily be surprised to see rozes win either.

[COBR] Jytcampbell vs Realistic Waters [ASTR]
rw has been as good, if not better, than anyone could've predicted he'd be coming into this. Seeing him allowed to pull some innovative sets has given me more confidence in his ability to keep opponent's off-guard and in general unprepared for him. I don't really know much about Jyt, but I feel confident in favoring rw regardless.

[NAGA] Kushalos vs Eternally [LEVI] - both have definetly shown their qualities, and whats probably most exciting about this game, is that both of these guys can go wild w their teams if they want to, kush is more likely to but I'd like to see eternally bring some edgy stuff
[SERP] Realistic Waters vs Elodin [SERP] - waters was probably the most convincing nu player to me, always solid prep, solid but not super standard teams, while elodin definetly knows his fair share, I think that waters is just the man to beat (go milos uwu)
[COBR] Hantsuki vs Nintendi [BUSH] - both have been rather unconvincing, nintendi w a few horribad teams too, but he's more convincing as a player imo

go elodin (and tangy)! this was a really fun tournament to watch and I'm glad that aerodactyl has an 83% winrate and medicham has a 0% winrate

I think it's pretty interesting what came out of Snake like Heliolisk's obscene winrate and usage rate as well as Xatu's chokehold on the tournament meta and it'll be interesting to see how NU shapes up heading into SPL especially with a possible Slowbro ban.
