You add friend codes on your 3DS'es main menu, and it works for all games (not just Pokémon). To add an internet friend, you have to be connected to the internet on your 3DS so it can verify. Then in-game your touchpad will have 3 different screens it can use, Poke Amie, Super Training, and Player Search System. To trade and battle over wifi, use the Player Search System and connect to the internet.
