Team at a Glance

Mamoswine (F) @ Ground Gem
Trait: Snow Cloak
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Icicle Spear
- Ice Shard
- Protect

Mamoswine is an amazing pokemon, Earthquake+Mamoswine’s 130 base attack hurts even when not boosted by the Ground gem. The ground gem will boost earthquake enough to slaughter neutral pokemon, and injure pokemon that are resistant to it. Salamence, my other lead, is immune to it also

Salamence (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Naughty Nature (+Atk, -SDef)
- Dragon Claw
- Flamethrower
- Earthquake
- Crunch

Salamence is definitely one of my favorite competitive pokemon. Having the highest base attack/sp. attack among all intimidate users and top 6 or better on every other stat, Salamence is definitely powerful enough for my team.

Alakazam (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Protect
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast

Alakazam has been on my VGC team every year except for last year for a good reason. It has the third most sp attack of all non legendary pokemon With 135. Shadow ball is here for Ghost types and other Psychic types, who would normally wall it and Psychic is Alakazam’s main STAB move. Life Orb+Magic Guard means the it gets 30% boost without the damage.

Breloom (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Spore
- Seed Bomb
- Drain Punch
- Protect

Breloom is one of the few pokemon who is lucky enough to have spore, the only 100% accurate sleep move. Toxic Orb+Poison Heal keeps him alive while sporing the opposing pokemon, as well as making him immune to return sporing and other status ailments.

Tyranitar @ Chople Berry
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 HP, 252 Atk, 6Def
-Rock Slide
-Crunch
-Protect
-Low Kick

Tyranitar is mainly on my team so my opponents don't know what pokemon i'll use. I might switch it for Breloom if they're using a weather team.

Zapdos @ Sitrus Berry
Nature: Modest
EVs: 140 HP, 252 SpA, 116 Speed
-Tailwind
-Thunderbolt/Discharge
-Heat Wave
-Detect

Again Zapdos is just on my team to me less predictable.

I don't play VGC but woudn't Protect be better on Alakazam over Substitute? It would protect you from Fake out which hit's Alakazam's lower defence.

Using the last two pokemon to be unpredictable is simply a bad idea. Part of VGC 12 is picking which pokemon to use to counter your opponent's team. If you just have two filler pokemon, and your opponent has a full team of six, your opponent will have an advantage before the fight even starts.

They only play w/ 4 pokemon and I have substitute over protect because I was using smogons alakazam set, think I will switch for protect though.

You only play with 4 in each battle, but you get 6 to choose from at the start while you're looking at the other team, so your opponent will have more options against your team than you will against theirs.
