[OVERVIEW]
As one of the fastest unboosted Pokemon in the metagame, Purugly stands out from other Normal-types like Komala, Bouffalant, and Silvally with its access to Fake Out, Knock Off, and U-turn. More importantly, Purugly gets Defiant, which allows it to punish Defog users such as Silvally-Water and Silvally-Dark for removing entry hazards from Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Sticky Web users such as Metang, Crustle, and Shuckle. Furthermore, Purugly's above-average Speed tier along with its priority options in Sucker Punch and the aforementioned Fake Out also allows it to take on a revenge killing role. However, Purugly's lack of useful resistances in tandem with its below-average bulk allows it to be taken out quite easily. This, along with the fact that its primary role is to deter entry hazards, means that Purugly is limited to hyper offense, whereas the aforementioned Normal-types fit on a multitude of playstyles. It also faces competition from Pawniard as a Defiant user, as the latter has more useful resistances and decent bulk with Eviolite and receives STAB on Knock Off and Sucker Punch.

Fake Out receives STAB and allows Purugly to get off guaranteed chip damage. It also gives Purugly a method to outprioritize foes such as Bibarel and Kecleon, (RC) and lets it finish off faster threats like Floatzel and Swoobat. Knock Off is used to remove important items such as Eviolite from Bronzor and Mareanie while also giving Purugly coverage against Ghost-types like Dusclops and weakened Silvally-Ghost that are immune to Fake Out and Return. Sucker Punch is Purugly's secondary priority option and works well in tandem with Fake Out to pick off weakened attackers such as Electivire and Chatot. U-turn allows Purugly to pivot out of unfavorable matchups against Pokemon such as Gourgeist-XL and Golem.

Set Details
========
Silk Scarf boosts the power of Fake Out and Return and, unlike Life Orb or Choice Band, doesn't wear Purugly down over time or lock it into one move. Defiant is the most important aspect of Purugly, making Defog users such as Swanna and Silvally-Dark think twice about removing entry hazards for fear of giving Purugly a free +2 Attack boost.

Usage Tips
========
Just because its Purugly's first turn on the field doesn't mean it should always go for Fake Out; the opposing Pokemon might switch out predicting it. Fake Out should primarily be used to rack up extra damage against foes that are not already within KO range of Return or Knock Off. While common Defog users such as Swanna and various Silvally formes are still present, try to keep Purugly as healthy as possible. Purugly should primarily switch into Defog when it's healthy enough to take a hit; otherwise, it can be put into KO range. Even if the opposing Defog user chooses not to remove entry hazards, it's still a win-win situation for Purugly, as entry hazard support along with its high base Speed and access to two strong priority moves makes it an exemplary late-game cleaner. A common strategy for Purugly is to use Fake Out followed by U-turn, fodders off a teammate, and switch back in to uses Fake Out again. This strategy is often seen against offensive threats such as Z-Mirror Move Swanna that outspeed the entirety of Purugly's team; such threats are usually huge concerns for the offensive and hyper offensive playstyles Purugly is seen on. By foddering off Pokemon, Purugly can use Fake Out again, allowing it to rack up damage against faster threats and strong priority users like Swoobat, Cacturne, and the aforementioned Z-Mirror Move Swanna that the rest of its team cannot handle.

Team Options
========
Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Sticky Web setters such as Mawile, Crustle, and Smeargle provide Purugly and its offensive teammates with the entry hazard support needed to clean late-game. Spinblockers such as Gourgeist-S have a favorable matchup versus common Rapid Spin users such as Komala and Sandslash and can prevent them from successfully removing entry hazards, pairing well with Purugly. Purugly helps keep entry hazards on the opposing side of the field for offensive Pokemon such as Rapidash, Swanna, Electivire, and Kadabra to take advantage of, allowing them to clean. Pokemon such as Silvally-Ground, Leafeon, and Swanna make good teammates, as they can switch into and check Rock- and Steel-types such as Golem and Pawniard, which Purugly struggles against, after it pivots out with U-turn. Purugly can be used alongside another Pokemon that can pivot and keep offensive momentum such as Electivire, Jumpluff, and Silvally-Fighting to form a solid VoltTurn core.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
===================
Stomping Tantrum gives Purugly coverage for Pokemon such as Probopass, Alolan Golem, Mawile, and Carbink, although it doesn't have room on its moveset for the move. Life Orb gives more of a boost to Purugly's attacks than Silk Scarf and also boosts Knock Off, Sucker Punch, and U-turn. However, this compromises Purugly's already below-average bulk and makes it even more susceptible to entry hazards and priority attacks. Purugly also doesn't want to take unnecessary Life Orb recoil when using U-turn against Pokemon it has an unfavorable matchup against, especially Rocky Helmet Mawile.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Rock-types**: Rock-types such as Golem, Crustle, and Carbink usually have high Defense, resist Purugly's Normal STAB options, and, (AC) in the case of Carbink, also resists Knock Off and U-turn. This gives these Pokemon ample time to lay Stealth Rock, boost with Shell Smash, or set Trick Room against Purugly.

**Physical Walls**: Physically defensive Pokemon such as Avalugg, Gourgeist-XL, and Pyukumuku are able to shrug off all of Purugly's attacks while simultaneously having access to reliable recovery options. Avalugg, in particular, is noteworthy for being able to remove entry hazards via Rapid Spin without triggering Defiant, as well as use Toxic on any potential Ghost-types as they switch in.

**Faster Attackers**: Faster Pokemon such as Floatzel, Electrode, and Choice Scarf users such as Rapidash and Silvally all outspeed Purugly and take advantage of its low defenses to revenge kill it. However, Purugly can use the combination of Fake Out + Sucker Punch to conversely take out faster attackers, as the aforementioned Pokemon also have low defensive stats and lack means of reliable recovery.

**Residual Damage**: Entry hazards and chip damage wear down Purugly over time, compromising its role of deterring Defog users from removing entry hazards.

  • Fake Out receives STAB and allows Purugly to get off guaranteed chip damage. It also gives Purugly a method to outprioritze priority users such as Shiftry Bibarel, Kecleon, and Floatzel.
  • Return is Purugly's strongest and most reliable STAB move to pick off weakened foes such as Swanna and Expert Belt Electivire with. If Fake Out does around 30% to a foe, Return will more than likely pick up the KO.
  • Knock Off is used to remove important items such as Eviolite from Bronzor and Mareanie, while also giving Purugly coverage against Ghost-types like Dusclops and weakened Silvally-Ghost that would otherwise bring immune to Fake Out and Return.

  • Just because its Purugly's first turn on the field doesn't mean it should always necessarily go for Fake Out; the opposing Pokemon might switch out predicting a weaker Fake Out. If Purugly is fast than the opposing Pokemon, it doesn't seem likely it carries a priority move itself, and Purugly can already pick up the KO with one of its other attacking moves, it should go for the KO. (Fluff / implied, leave it as is) Fake Out should primarily be used to rack up extra damage against foes that are not already within range of Return or Knock Off.
  • While common Defog users such as Swanna and various Silvally formes are still present, try to keep Purugly as healthy as possible, so that if need be, it can switch in to receive a plus two Attack boost from Defiant. Mention here if they don't defog the pros of cleaning with hazards up.
  • Purugly also commonly uses Fake Out followed by U-turn, foddering a teammate, and then uses Fake Out again. This is seen against Pokemon such as Z-Me First Pinsir, when an offensive threat outspeeds the entirety of Purugly's team. This is usually a huge concern seeing as Purugly is seen on offensive or hyper offensive playstyles where nothing can really take a hit. By foddering out Pokemon, Purugly can use Fake Out again, allowing it to rack up against faster threats the rest of its team cannot handle.

  • Spinblockers such as Silvally-Ghost and Gourgeist-S have a favorable matchup versus common Rapid Spin users such as Komala and Sandslash and can prevent them from successfully removing entry hazards.

**Rock-types**: Rock-types such as Golem, Crustle, and Carbink usually have high physical Defense, resist Purugly’s Normal STAB options and in the case of Carbink, also resists Knock Off and U-turn. This gives these Pokemon ample time to lay Stealth Rock, boost with Shell Smash, or set Trick Room.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types such as Probopass, Mawile, Bronzor, and Metang can check Purugly although the latter two dislike taking Knock Off. Intimidate Mawile although resisting all of Purugly's moves doesn't necessarily want to give Purugly a net +1 Attack boost with Intimidate activating Defiant.

**Ghost-types**: Certain Ghost-types such as Gourgeist-XL and Silvally-Ghost Dusclops can beat Purugly one-versus-one, forcing Purugly to U-turn out. Kecleon can also use Shadow Sneak to play around Return and U-turn, as well as Sucker Punch to play around Knock Off, although its a fragile Pokemon itself on the physical end of the spectrum. Replace with stall phys walls, as the only ghost that checks it totally is Gourg. Avalug, gourg-xl, and pyuk are good examples of mons that can stomach its Return / Knock combo and out stall it.

**Faster Attackers**: Faster Pokemon such as Floatzel, Electrode, and Choice Scarf users such as Rapidash and Silvally all outspeed Purugly and take advantage of its low defenses to revenge kill it. However, Purugly can use the combination of Fake Out + Sucker Punch to conversely take out faster attackers, as generally speaking they also have low defensive stats and lack means of reliable recovery.

**Residual Damage**: Entry hazards and chip damage wear down Purugly over time, compromising its role to threaten Defog users from removing opposing entry hazards.

[OVERVIEW]
  • As one of the fastest unboosted Pokemon in the metagame, Purugly stands out among other Normal-types such as Komala, Bouffalant, and Vigoroth Silvally with its access to Fake Out, Knock Off, and U-turn. Silvally is a better comparison here because similarly to Purugly, Silvally's role is usually to revenge kill (and it has U-turn), but Purugly's access to Fake Out and not needing a Choice Scarf helps give a niche over Silv. Meanwhile, Viggy is much weaker and reliant on setup so it does not really compete with it.
  • More importantly, Purugly gets Defiant, which allows it to punish Defog users such as Silvally-Water and Silvally-Dark for removing entry hazards when Purugly is paired with Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Sticky Web users such as Metang, Crustle, and Shuckle.

  • It also faces competition from Pawniard as a Defiant user, having more useful resistances, decent bulk with Eviolite, and receiving STAB on Knock Off and Sucker Punch.
It is also worth mentioning that unlike other offensive Normal-types such Silvally, Komala, and Bouffalant that can fit on different styles, Purugly is usually limited to hyper offense (mostly b/c of its low bulk)

  • Offensive Pokemon that can abuse entry hazards such as Rapidash, Swanna, Electivire, and Kadabra all appreciate having the opponent's Pokemon weakened by said hazards so they can clean up. The point is not very clear here. I'm assuming you mean that Purugly helps keep entry hazards on the field because it deters Defog, and in turn offensive Pokemon appreciate entry hazards staying on the field. Rn it sounds like Purugly is the one that provides entry hazard support so you have to clear that up

Fake Out receives STAB and allows Purugly to get off guaranteed chip damage. It also gives Purugly a method to outprioritze priority users such as Bibarel, Kecleon, and Floatzel. Technically Floatzel's priority outpaces yours. I'd remove it as a mention but add that Fake Out is also useful for finishing off faster threats like Floatzel/Simi___. Not strictly true; quite a few HO teams make use of faster mons like Gourgest-Small or Kadabra that can pressure Z-MM Swanna. You're mostly right but I'd avoid using absolutes. By foddering out Pokemon, Purugly can use Fake Out again, allowing it to rack up against faster threats the rest of its team cannot handle. Depending on how you reword the earlier lines you might want to give examples here.

They all appreciate having the opponent's Pokemon weakened by said entry hazards so they can clean. Pokemon such as Silvally-Ground, Leafeon, and Poliwrath I'd recommend replacing Poliwrath here with something like Swanna; Poliwrath doesn't really suit HO teams outside of Rain. make good teammates as they can switch into and check Rock- and Steel-types such as Golem and Pawniard that Purugly struggles against after it pivots out with U-turn. As one of the fastest unboosted Pokemon in the metagame, Purugly stands out among from other Normal-types such as Komala, Bouffalant, and Silvally with its access to Fake Out, Knock Off, and U-turn. More importantly, Purugly gets Defiant, which allows it to punish Defog users such as Silvally-Water and Silvally-Dark for removing entry hazards when Purugly is paired with Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Sticky Web users such as Metang, Crustle, and Shuckle. Furthermore, Purugly's above-average Speed tier along with its priority options in Sucker Punch and the aforementioned Fake Out also allows Purugly it to take on a revenge killing role. However, Purugly's lack of useful resistances in tandem with its below-average bulk allows it to be taken out quite easily. This, along with the fact that its primary role of deterring is to deter entry hazards, means that Purugly is limited to hyper offense teams only (redundant), whereas the aforementioned Normal-types fit on a multitude of playstyles. It also faces competition from Pawniard as a Defiant user, having as the latter has more useful resistances (RC) and decent bulk with Eviolite (RC) and receives STAB on Knock Off and Sucker Punch.

Fake Out receives STAB and allows Purugly to get off guaranteed chip damage. It also gives Purugly a method to outprioritize priority users such as Bibarel and Kecleon, (AC) Fake Out is also useful for finishing and lets it finish off faster threats like Floatzel and Swoobat while being one-hundred percent free (redundant w/ first sentence). Knock Off is used to remove important items such as Eviolite from Bronzor and Mareanie, while also giving Purugly coverage against Ghost-types like Dusclops and weakened Silvally-Ghost that would otherwise bring are immune to Fake Out and Return. Sucker Punch is Purugly's secondary priority option and works well in tandem with Fake Out to pick off weakened attackers such as Electivire and Chatot. U-turn allows Purugly to pivot out of unfavorable matchups deemed unfavorable such as when it's faced against Pokemon such as Gourgeist-XL or Golem.

Set Details
========
Silk Scarf boosts the power of Fake Out and Return (RC) and, (AC) unlike Life Orb and or Choice Band, (AC) doesn't wear Purugly down over time or lock it into one move. Defiant is the most important aspect of Purugly, making Defog users such as Swanna and Silvally-Dark think twice about removing entry hazards (RC) scared they might give for fear of giving Purugly two a free +2 Attack boosts.

Usage Tips
========
Just because it'(apostrophe)s Purugly's first turn on the field doesn't mean it should always necessarily (or remove "always") go for Fake Out; the opposing Pokemon might switch out predicting a weaker Fake Out. Fake Out should primarily be used to rack up extra damage against foes that are not already within KO range of Return or Knock Off. While common Defog users such as Swanna and various Silvally formes are still present, try to keep Purugly as healthy as possible. Purugly should primarily be switching switch into Defog only (or remove "primarily") when it's healthy enough to take a hit; otherwise, it can be put into KO range of being KO'd. Even if the opposing Defog user chooses not to remove entry hazards, it's still a win-win situation for Purugly, as entry hazard support along with its high base Speed and access to two strong priority moves makes it an exemplary late-game cleaner. Purugly also commonly uses Fake Out followed by U-turn, fodders off a teammate, and then switches in to uses Fake Out again. This strategy is often seen against Pokemon offensive threats such as Z-Mirror Move Swanna (RC) when an offensive threat that outspeeds the entirety of Purugly's team; (semicolon) This is such threats are usually a huge concerns seeing as Purugly is seen on for the offensive or and hyper offensive playstyles Purugly is seen on. By foddering out off Pokemon, Purugly can use Fake Out again, allowing it to rack up damage against faster threats and strong priority users the rest of its team cannot handle (moved; ambiguous wording) like Swoobat, Cacturne, and the aforementioned Z-Mirror Move Swanna that the rest of its team cannot handle.

Team Options
========
Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Sticky Web setters such as Mawile, Crustle, and Smeargle all provide Purugly and its offensive teammates with the entry hazard support needed to clean late-game. Spinblockers such as Gourgeist-S have a favorable matchup versus common Rapid Spin users such as Komala and Sandslash and can prevent them from successfully removing entry hazards, pairing well with Purugly. Purugly helps keep entry hazards on the opposing side of the field for offensive Pokemon such as Rapidash, Swanna, Electivire, and Kadabra to abuse take advantage of, (AC) allowing them to clean. They all appreciate having the opponent's Pokemon weakened by said entry hazards so they can clean. Pokemon such as Silvally-Ground, Leafeon, and Swanna make for good teammates, (AC) as they can switch into and check Rock- and Steel-types such as Golem and Pawniard, (AC) that which Purugly struggles against, (AC) after it pivots out with U-turn. Purugly can be used alongside another Pokemon who that can pivot and keep offensive momentum such as Electivire, Jumpluff, or and Silvally-Fighting and to form a solid VoltTurn core.

Other Options
===================
Stomping Tantrum gives Purugly coverage for Pokemon such as Probopass, Alolan Golem, Mawile, and Carbink, although it doesn't have room on its moveset for Stomping Tantrum. Life Orb gives more of a boost to Purugly's attacks than Silk Scarf and also boosts Knock Off, Sucker Punch, and U-turn. However, this compromises Purugly's already below-average bulk and makes it even more susceptible to opposing (unnecessary; also, "opposing entry hazards" could mean "entry hazards set by the opponent" or "entry hazards on the opponent's side") entry hazards and priority attacks. Purugly also doesn't want to take unnecessary Life Orb recoil when using U-turn against Pokemon it has an unfavorable matchup against, especially Rocky Helmet Mawile.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Rock-types**: Rock-types such as Golem, Crustle, and Carbink usually have high physical Defense, resist Purugly's Normal STAB options, (AC) and in the case of Carbink, also resists Knock Off and U-turn. This gives these Pokemon ample time to lay Stealth Rock, boost with Shell Smash, or set Trick Room against Purugly.

**Physical Walls**: Physically defensive Pokemon such as Avalugg, Gourgeist-XL, and Pyukumuku are all able to shrug off all of Purugly's attacks while simultaneously having access to reliable recovery options. Avalugg, (AC) in particular, (AC) is noteworthy for being able to remove entry hazards via Rapid Spin without triggering Defiant, (AC) while being able to as well as use (repetition) Toxic on any potential Ghost-types as they switch in.

**Residual Damage**: Entry hazards and chip damage wear down Purugly over time, compromising its role to threaten of deterring Defog users from removing opposing entry hazards.
