Taking over for Anty

Every generation is different and the metagame is constantly changing. However there has always been and always will be threats. Whether they are defensive threats or offensive threats, every competent player should have a way to handle top-tier threats. That's where you guys come in! This project aims to gather some of the common top-tier threats in the metagame and find Pokémon that can either check or counter them.

Procedure:

1. Every round, I will nominate a Pokémon for discussion. Within one week's time, you guys will have the ability to discuss and nominate various Pokémon that you think can either check or counter the victim of the week, with a description explaining how they can do that (look at other nominations for example!).

2. After the deadline, I will choose the top three checks and the top three counters. Should there be a lot of nominations, I will discuss my choices with other skilled players to ensure the selections are not biased and that all nominations have been considered thoroughly.

3. The results will be archived and the process will continue week after week.

Rules:

Update: to avoid confusion, everyone has to post damage calcs when they're submitting their check/counter. This makes it easier for everyone to see how effective the Pokemon in question is as a check/counter.

1. When nominating your check/counter please include:
Description, set and calcs

2. Follow the definitions of checks and counters that was posted in The Smog issue #32:

Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

3. Only post sets viable in PU. Niche Pokemon such as Natu or Dusclop are totally acceptable, but bottom-of-the-barrel stuff like Slaking and Regigigas aren't. The viability ranking thread is your best friend, so if something isn't ranked there, 95% of the time it's not worth posting here.

4. From Saturday - Tuesday, each person can only nominate one Pokemon. From Wednesday to Friday, you can nominate as many as you want.

5. Help people out if you think they're wrong, but please be nice. That includes you, fagtron

6. Do be creative. Dont put shedinja either, as that is easy for specific pokemon

7. If you not sure how to format, check other examples

8. Have fun!

9. If you reserve something, you have to do it with in ~1.5 hours, or i will let someone else do that mon

LO Zebra as a counter

523.gif

Zebstrika @ Life Orb
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Overheat
- Hidden Power [Grass]

Zebstrika has sap sipper to become immune to sleep powder and seed bomb, and can OHKO jumpluff after rocks and has good chances to kill from 100%. The best Jumpluff can do is about 27% with an unboosted acrobatics and Zebstrika is faster, so Zebra can counter Jumpluff despite having no defensive investment.
252 SpA Life Orb Zebstrika Overheat vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Jumpluff: 278-330 (95.5 - 113.4%) -- 75% chance to OHKO/Guaranteed OHKO after rocks
252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zebstrika: 76-90 (26.1 - 30.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Scarf Rotom-Frost as Check

Rotom-Frost @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Blizzard
- Trick
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt

Rotom-Frost with a choice scarf can outspeed and OHKO a jumpluff, barring the miss with blizzard. It can also switch in on an acrobatics, but also needs to be aware of Sleep Powders.

252 SpA Rotom-F Blizzard vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Jumpluff: 640-760 (219.9 - 261.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Jumpluff Seed Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Rotom-F: 72-85 (29.8 - 35.2%) -- 20.2% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Rotom-F: 49-58 (20.3 - 24%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

RestTalk Klang as a Counter

Klang @ Eviolite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Shift Gear
- Gear Grind

Klang is not passive if it's put to sleep thanks to sleep talk, and it resists both of jumpluff's STABs. Rest keeps it healthy, and shift gear lets it set up on jumpluff.

+6 252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Klang: 104-123 (32 - 37.9%)

So even if you get really unlucky with sleep talk moves and sleep turns you will be able to take jumpluff's attacks. Gear grind is a 2HKO after stealth rocks, and a 2HKO without rocks after a shift gear.

For the record guys, I already took into account checks and counters for Haunter from the previous thread, so BenOhver, please refer to Jumpluff. Also 365pokemon, you can only reserve one pokemon.

Avalugg as a counter

Avalugg @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Recover
- Avalanche
- Earthquake / Toxic

good ol' table Avalugg may not be seen a lot recently, but it's still a lord checking and countering Strong Physical Attackers, and Jumpluff is one of these cases. Even with nearly no Def Investments Avalugg manages to take really little damage by Jumpluff STABs, and can answer OHKOing it with Avalanche, yes it can be put to sleep put will force anyway Jumpluff's switch most of the time since it doesn't take a lot of damage even if gets hit by +2 Acrobatics, and has a recovery anyway so it can tank hits all day.

+2 252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Avalugg: 123-145 (31.2 - 36.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Avalugg: 61-73 (15.5 - 18.5%) -- possible 8HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Avalugg Avalanche vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jumpluff: 792-936 (272.1 - 321.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Vullaby as a Counter

Emo Togepi (Vullaby) @ Eviolite
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Defog
- Whirlwind / Toxic
- Roost
- Foul Play

There are actually a ton of Jumpluff counters/checks! Vital Spirit (cough HP Ice Scarf Electabuzz cough) / Overcoat mons like Vullaby are great for taking the Sleep Powder. Additionally, +2 Acro only does ~40% to Vullaby, while you can hit Jumpluff hard with Foul Play or Whirlwind it right back out for more Stealth Rock damage on Jumpluff.

0- Atk Vullaby Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jumpluff: 121-144 (41.5 - 49.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 0- Atk Vullaby Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jumpluff: 243-286 (83.5 - 98.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Vullaby: 61-73 (17.7 - 21.2%) -- possible 5HKO
+2 252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Vullaby: 121-144 (35.2 - 41.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
After Vullaby has used Roost: +2 252 Atk Jumpluff Seed Bomb vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Vullaby: 88-105 (25.6 - 30.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Tangela as a check

Tangela @ Eviolite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
- Sleep Powder
- Leaf Storm
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Ice]

While it can't directly switch in, Tangela is immune to Sleep Powder, resists Seed Bomb, and can take two unboosted Acrobatics while possibly OHKOing with HP Ice (guarenteed OHKO after SR).

252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Tangela: 126-150 (37.7 - 44.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ SpA Tangela Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Jumpluff: 248-296 (85.2 - 101.7%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO

Also tagging GasQuake BadPandaPancham and Rennyjesus to finish your reserved Pokemon.

Sneasel as a check.

Sneasel @ Life Orb
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Low Kick

Sneasel cannot switch in without taking a lot of damage, but it can easily force Jumpluff out with either Icicle Crash or Ice Shard. Eviolite variants can switch in with less fear but still do not want to be put to sleep.

252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Icicle Crash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jumpluff: 785-925 (269.7 - 317.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Sneasel Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jumpluff: 374-442 (128.5 - 151.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Jumpluff Seed Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Sneasel: 123-145 (49 - 57.7%) -- 96.1% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Sneasel: 169-199 (67.3 - 79.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Don't worry! and Sorry about not finishing my nomination of Pawniard

I'm now finishing it:

Pawniard as a Check

As long as Pawniard avoids Sleep Powder (That can deal with almost everything else), Pawniard can deal with everything else that Jumpluff can throw at it... Also it can revenge kill it with Sucker Punch Priority if has been weakened previously or if it switches on that annoying Sticky web.

+2 252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eviolite Pawniard: 93-110 (40.2 - 47.6%) -- 2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 Atk Jumpluff Seed Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eviolite Pawniard: 67-80 (29 - 34.6%) -- 72.8% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Even has a nice chance to survive the strongest Jumpluff attack after Stealth Rock...
+6 252 Atk Jumpluff Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eviolite Pawniard: 186-219 (80.5 - 94.8%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252+ Atk Pawniard Iron Head vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jumpluff: 144-171 (49.4 - 58.7%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO
252+ Atk Pawniard Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jumpluff: 144-171 (49.4 - 58.7%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO

And in the other side, even without Stealth Rock Pawniard has a nice chance of the OHKO Jumpluff at +2
+2 252+ Atk Pawniard Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jumpluff: 288-340 (98.9 - 116.8%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

That's why I think Pawniard can be a check of SD Jumpluff...

TURTLE VS TURTLE RAMPAGE

Torterra For Counter

Torterra @ Life Orb
Ability: Shell Armor
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Rock Polish
- Wood Hammer
- Earthquake
- Superpower

The Main Way Torterra Counters Shell Smash Carracosta Is Outspeeding
Torterra With Rock Polish: 422 Speed
Carracosta With Shell Smash: 326 Speed
Torterra w/o Rock Polish: 211 Speed
Carracosta w/o Shell Smash: 163 Speed

But Other Than That, Even With It Running Solid Rock The -1 Defense And The x4 Weakness It Is A 1-Hit-KO, Even Then, If It Was To SOOOOOOMEHOW Tank The Hit, It Would Still Only 2hko Torterra, Torterra Is Also A Reliable Switch In (see calcs below for the details why)
Calcs:
Torterra Attacks:
252+ Atk Life Orb Torterra Wood Hammer vs. -1 4 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 870-1029 (300 - 354.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Torterra Earthquake vs. -1 4 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 363-429 (125.1 - 147.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Carracosta Attacks:
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Torterra: 157-187 (47.4 - 56.4%) -- 84% chance to 2HKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Torterra: 195-230 (58.9 - 69.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Zen Headbutt vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Torterra: 209-247 (63.1 - 74.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

lol you went brutal on this week
Gourgeist-Super as a Strong Check

Gourgeist-Super @ Leftovers
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SpD
Impish Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Leech Seed
- Synthesis
- Seed Bomb

If you need a fat Spinblocker that checks and counters strong Physical Attackers and gives the team some Utility with Will-O-Wisp, Gourgeist-Super is your choice to go. Even if not that common, Gourgeist-Super is able to tank a +2 Stone Edge from Carracosta with Full HP and can answer back KOing it with Seed Bomb if at -1 Defense(the same turn it tanks the move). It still has to be played carefully since it can't really mindlessly switch-in on a +2 Attack because it will get pulverized the turn after, so it has to enter the turn Carracosta sets up the Shell Smash / Attacks without the +2 Atk Boost or in Revengekilling, so that's why I listed it as a check.

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 160+ Def Gourgeist-Super: 274-325 (73.2 - 86.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 160+ Def Gourgeist-Super: 138-164 (36.8 - 43.8%) -- 99.7% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Gourgeist-Super Seed Bomb vs. -1 4 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 306-360 (105.5 - 124.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Choice Specs Floatzel as a check:

Floatzel @ Choice Specs
Ability: Water Veil
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Electric]
- Baton Pass / Switcheroo / Surf

This only outruns if Adamant but is still a solid check as you can see by these calcs:

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Floatzel: 133-156 (42.7 - 50.1%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Floatzel Hydro Pump vs. -1 4 HP / 0 SpD Carracosta: 433-510 (149.3 - 175.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO (still OHKOes if White Herb)

ScarfBuck as Check

Sawsbuck @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sap Sipper
Happiness: 0
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Horn Leech/Seed Bomb
- Jump Kick
- Frustration
- Baton Pass/Filler

Sawsbuck is mainly a check due to it's ability to outspeed Carracosta after a Shell Smash as well as having about a 68% chance to kill it with no hazards or prior damage or the debuff. Although Sawsbuck can't kill Carracosta 100% of the time before the boost or switch in, it is able to do solid damage to Carracosta before and after the boost.

252 Atk Sawsbuck Horn Leech vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 243-288 (83.7 - 99.3%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after 1 layer of Spikes
252 Atk Sawsbuck Seed Bomb vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 255-306 (88.2 - 105.8%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Sawsbuck: 274-325 (91 - 107.9%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

Rotom-Frost as a Check

Rotom-Frost @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Blizzard
- Thunderbolt
- Trick

Scarf rotom-f outspeeds +2 carracosta(jolly or adamant), can tank a +2 aqua jet even after rocks, and OHKOs costa with thunderbolt. Thunderbolt can still KO after rocks if carracosta is running white herb.

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Carracosta Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Rotom-F: 142-168 (58.9 - 69.7%)
252 SpA Rotom-F Thunderbolt vs. -1 4 HP / 0 SpD Solid Rock Carracosta: 406-481 (140 - 165.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

If it's white herb:
252 SpA Rotom-F Thunderbolt vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Solid Rock Carracosta: 270-319 (93.1 - 110%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Raichu is not really a check as Aqua Jet OHKOes after the smash and also 2HKOes before it so Raichu cannot even reliably force it out.

Tangela as a counter

Tangela @ Eviolite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Sleep Powder
- Giga Drain
- Ancient Power

Takes a +2 Stone Edge even without defensive investment, KOs Carracosta and heals half its HP with giga drain, and then switches out. Regenerator allows it to function the rest of the match besides beating carracosta, unlike Gourgeist.

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Eviolite Tangela: 242-286 (72.4 - 85.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Reserving Metang... Still dunno if as a Counter or just a check, but reserving nonetheless!
Insert Metang GIF Please

Metang @ Eviolite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Atk
Impish
- Meteor Mash
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic / Bullet Punch

Metang can resist both of the strongest Carracosta's attacks, even at +2 and can pray on those weakened defenses to Hit it with Earthquake, Meteor Mash (To try getting that +1) or even set SR or Toxic it if you think that you have another thing to check it like Jumpluff or Zebstrika.

Carracosta Vs Metang:
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Metang: 99-117 (30.5 - 36.1%) -- 43.3% chance to 3HKO (almost 100% with SR)
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Aqua Jet vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Metang: 79-95 (24.3 - 29.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Metang: 26-31 (8 - 9.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Metang Vs Carracosta:
4 Atk Metang Meteor Mash vs. -1 4 HP / 0 Def Carracosta: 91-108 (31.3 - 37.2%) -- 78.8% chance to 3HKO (Guaranteed with SR)
4 Atk Metang Earthquake vs. -1 4 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 102-120 (35.1 - 41.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 4 Atk Metang Earthquake vs. -1 4 HP / 0 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 151-178 (52 - 61.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Which means if you manage to get a +1 with first Meteor Mash you would beat at least 242 HP of Costa in Two turns which it's around 83% on two minimum rolls (and almost 99% on two max rolls)... Not bad I guess...

Also, if you are specially anxious for beating Costa, I guess you could go:
0 SpA Metang Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Solid Rock Carracosta: 153-183 (52.7 - 63.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Using a Relaxed nature instead of Impish

See ya Guys!
