Hello and welcome to the second edition of the PU Teambuilding Competition! The goal of this project is to observe and better understand how experienced PU players go about building their teams around a particular core. It's also a great way to improve and refine your own teambuilding skills, or just simply learn how others do it! Anyone is free to participate and I encourage as much discussion as possible; however, I'd like to point out that you do not have to post a team to contribute to this thread. Feedback is allowed and actually preferred in this thread, so if you have comments or concerns about someone's team, don't be afraid to post it! The process is as follows:

Each round, I will choose a core of two Pokemon (or only one Pokemon sometimes). It is then up to you to build a team around it, designing sets, teammates, roles, and everything in between. Identifying weaknesses, strategies, and so forth are key parts of teambuilding and I'm quite interested to see how that carries through in this thread. I also hope to emphasize a lot of creativity with this as well—new gems and underrated Pokemon and cores are popping up all the time, and hopefully this thread can bring about a lot of new discoveries about the metagame! After the submission period is over (which will be after around give or take a week) I will announce the voting period, where you will get a couple of days to vote on what you think is the best team. By the end of the voting period, the votes will be tallied and team with the most votes will be archived in the Hall of Fame I will be posting below, and the process will start again with a new core.

Some rules I'm expecting people to follow:
  • Make the post presentable. Fancy cute sprites are encouraged so long as they aren't as wide as Kim Kardashian's ass, but be sure to provide a link for other users so that they may use them in the future.
  • Make sure you have a paragraph describing how your team functions and how it supports the core. If I wanted to look at a pastebin of some mediocre team, I would go to the RMT forum and hunt for the locked threads made by users with such pristine names like Pikachu77.
  • Don't insult users if their teams aren't up to standard, feel free to question why people are running certain things or suggest changes that will make the team better. In fact, I highly encourage discussion but don't be rude about it. Basically, just don't be a jackass.
  • Use hide tags when posting your team. Don't be that douchebag that makes everyone scroll down for an extra 5 seconds. No one likes that, and they won't like you afterwards.
  • Be creative! While there'll be no restrictions this time around, try to explore uncommon Pokemon if circumstances allow it. Channel your inner hipster.
  • You are allowed to edit your teams with testing and / or feedback from other people (i.e. you realize it sucks or gets 6-0ed by something), however be sure to make note of these edits in the original post (that means pastebin it you dodo). Once the voting period begins however, you cannot edit your teams anymore.
The Pokemon you are going to build around this week is...

Building time will be about 4/5 days then 2/3 days for voting

This is a team I built around girafarig because no one else did! I started off with the underrated set of the decade; agility girafarig. It has dual stab and then shadow ball for ghosts and psychics (it can run energy ball if youre scared of costa/barb, or even eq for probopass). Zebby works well as it weakens special walls like grumpig, and can bait in pokes like rose for girafarig to set up on. Pilo provides stealth rocks and is amazing on every team due to its typing and bulk, as well as offensive presence, and roselia provides spikes while also checking water types and being the primary special tank. Missy finishes off the defensive trio as it has more physical bulk than pilo meaning it can check +barbaracle if at high health. I decided to run no speed as defensive missy legit needs none unless you are scared of stoutland, but that requires a lot of investment (also i guess it helps vs vigoroth). Lastly scarf bascuilin is used as a revenge killer for fast mons like fraxure and regice, while also checking shell smash carracosta. Moveset looks weird but those are the only four moves it will ever need, with double edge hitting peli neutrally (hp elec makes it set up fodder) while letting it clean late game if the opp has a water resist.

In future i promise to chose better mons :(

i made this team with one thing in mind: girafarig has barely any roles in which it isn't severly outclassed. i decided to go with some baton pass shenanigans, mainly cause i don't think girafarig as a pokemon itself has any kind of outstanding ( or upright standing for that matter ) qualities. Sub / CM / Baton pass in order to get either a cm- or a subpass to anything that appreciates it. for example if girafarig is in vs roselia, setting up a sub and passing it to gourgeist; passing cm boosts to floatzel so that it can do more damage etc.

the first recipient i chose was floatzel, purely for the fact that it is really really fast, and thus threatens offensive teams a lot. we all know the ability of this pokemon, i don't think i gotta go any further into this. i do see that it doesn't have the greatest type synergy with girafarig, but at least it can switch into steels pokemon and most girafarig switch ins do seem like they'd rather not take a hydro. switcheroo is mainly for more defensively orientated teams; gaining the ability to switch moves and crippling a major wall is a huge plus. the next one i decided for was, as strange as it looks, gourgeist. this set is build to 2hko roselia after rocks and spikes, to have some means of handling rock blast leads and to spread burns. it really isn't the strongest possible mon, but with wow, decent speed and +1 or +2 in sdef it can be hard to take down and fire blast + bullet seed hit most things for at least noticeable damage. the next pokemon of my choice was zebstrika, another great speedster. it slowly chips down the special walls, offers switch ins for girafarig (and easy doubles to floatzel if the opponent has pilo). i'm sure we all know what this does.

the next 2 mons might seem a little odd, but i really really felt like this team struggled with power as a whole and i felt like with baton pass, wow and zebra a lot of switching would be happening, on both sides; i wanted to punish my opponent for switching and thus all these hazards came into play. probopass also brings a few nice ressistances ( and twave to not be fodder ), one more volt switch and rocks, guess it does what it does, without being outstanding. venipede is purely here to get a kind of 5v5 situation going on with hazards on my side, whichever i felt like was more profitable.

guess that was the teambuilding process, hope you like the team

I have some ideas, but I dunno if they are just suited for the thread...

One revolves with the idea of using Barbaracle - Carracosta - Girafarig - Misdreavus - Zebstrika - Roselia, expecting to set some hazards and Barbaracle - Carracosta as Smashers wincons... Girafarig will support both of them absorbing Grass moves with a physical sap sipper set that can also baton pass the boosts, Zebstrika absorbing Electrical moves with Ligthningrod and Misdreavus absorbing Fighting and Ground moves, spreading burns and using memento for an easier setup...

The other one revolves around Girafarig, Mr Mime, Zebstrika, Floatzel, Leavanny and Monferno... Girafarig would be a Nasty Passer to every other poké, while Leavanny sets webs. Monferno as an offensive poké with special priority in case it could be needed and Zeb, Mr Mime and Floatzel can really use a Nasty Plot Boost on their attacks since they are already fast and have decent coverage... The only problem with this second one is the horrible weakness to ground type moves...

So I decided to take a different approach on Girafarig than both Anty and Mael, as I wanted to build around NastyPass Girafarig. Since the tier is so offensive right now, I figured I could find two fast, strong special attackers that could really abuse a +2 boost. The first thing that came to mind is Floatzel, which outspeeds most of the unboosted meta and has great coverage along with a nice Special Attack stat. In the final moveslot, I couldn't use Baton Pass because of the new Baton Pass Clause, so instead I opted for Aqua Jet to pick off weakened faster Pokemon such as Zebstrika and Ninjask. Next I needed a Stealth Rocker, and why not add the best one in the tier, Piloswine. It overall synergizes well with Girafarig and Floatzel and it provides a strong Zebstrika check. Next, I added Vullaby, which forms a great core along with Piloswine that covers one another's weaknesses really well and works to win the hazards game. Chatot was added next to make great use of a +2 Special Attack boost and tear through offense and bulkier teams alike. Modest Scarf already tears through offense by itself, but add a +2 boost to that, and this thing is hard to stop late game. Lastly, I added Roselia, which provides Toxic Spikes to help weaken Floatzel and Chatot's checks while also checking opposing Water-types. Sadly, this team doesn't have a reliable check to Barbaracle or Carracosta, but both of the two experience a lot of trouble setting up on this team in general that it shouldn't be a problem. And let's be real, those things are gone once this next suspect ends. Enjoy!

girafarig is nastypass because i didn't want to use agility pass. zebstrika and floatzel are the lategame receivers, each deadly at +2 because of their high speed and good coverage. eviolite machoke does things like knocking off clefairys for zebstrika/floatzel, switching into missy, wearing down defensive mons by removing their leftovers, switching into politoed which troubles floatzel and hopefully getting burned so it can punch holes for the sweepers to capitalise on, it also switches into and knocks off rose or a switch-in. golem is the stealth rocker because i didn't want one 4x weak to superpower and i wanted sucker punch to deal with things that setup before i do, and kadabra is a final receiver with a guaranteed boost due to sash, that also acts as failsafes against smashers (and regice with thunder wave) if they set up on girafarig and ultimately patches up any of the weakness of this team caused by the lack of synergy girafarig has to offer. the girafarig is voice/lo over sub/lefties so it isn't setup bait by too much.

This team uses Girafarig as a pivot it can nasty plot and baton pass to Zebstrika, who can be a late game sweeper. Girafarig can also baton pass sap sipper boosts to Barbaracle who can shell smash and late game sweep. Piloswine has good over round bulk and is a solid stealth rocker. Rocks will break any sashes that are stopping Zebstrika or Barbaracle to sweep. Dusknoir is a tank psychical wall that can return with Will-O-Wisp and pain split to gain back health. Roselia is more of a special wall and also can set up spikes to help weather down your opponents. Hope you enjoy this team.

In this team I am using Klang as a sweep stopper, as well as a defensive pivot. Klang has thunder wave which is able to stop Barbaracle and Carracosta from sweeping. Klang can take a psychical hit than volt switch which can allow the match up be in you favor. Pelipper and Klang make a great core together, Pelipper's resistances are Klang's weaknesses, Pelipper is also useful for defog and scald. Machoke has knock of which is very nice in a meta of so many eviolite users, as well as stab close combat that few pokemon want to take. Rotom Frost is the speed of the team, trick to stop any walls and volt switch as another great pivot. Armaldo has stealth rocks and a life orb so after stealth rocks it can also take out any pokemon that attempts to clear away the rocks. Finally, Ninetales is a Special attacker sweeper, with nasty plot and substitute, with great speed and a substitute Ninetales is a powerful attacker. Ninetales also benefits from the volt switch and thunder wave from Klang. I have been testing this team around the 1300's on the ladder and it has been working so I hope you enjoy.

Just a disclaimer this team gets 100% bodied by Acid Armor CM Duosion. This was actually a slightly tweaked speed build, but I don't think it's too weak to anything else really but yeah. Somewhat smash weak too because intended to be for post smasher meta, but scarfchu and badsculin lol. Anyway, I started with Basculin because the immediate offensive power is very nice versus teams that only handle special waters and smashers. I wanted an Electric immunity so that it wasn't total volt switch fodder after every KO, so I went offensive with scarfchu because why not. Then something bulky that was originally pursuit dusk, but I like the spell tag set with lefties on it because the recovery is actually pretty useful at times and spell tag sneak is still piss weak anyway. Sub wisp lefties rotom because it's fucking amazing versus bulkier teams without a magic guarder and gives me a nice pilo switch-in and is all around fun, while Clef gives me rocks and a special water switch-in. Final slot went to Klang because it gave me a Stout/Dodrio switch-in with recovery, something to win late game, and I was pressed for time. Cool team overall imo, most likely weak to something I don't see but FREE BADSCULIN

blalib you might want to consider passho ninetales with HP ground over sub because your team is criminally weak to simi/float

This is a team I made quite a while back, shortly after the ban on Shell Smash. The team's original purpose was to see if Huntail had any viability as a Coil passer. While the ship has sailed on that particular question, with Bulk Up Floatzel generally being a much better option, I've found this team puts in a surprising amount of work, in part because the recipients of Huntail's boosts actually appreciate the added accuracy provided by Coil. The goal for this team is to get Klang to sweep after opening some holes in the opposing team. Generally, start by leading with Piloswine and ensure SR is up at all costs. The spread used by Huntail ensures a 3HKO against Roselia, allowing it to setup at least once. Huntail can itself try to sweep with the Waterfall + Sucker combo. But more often than not will be passing to Klang; both are mons with good typing synergy which more often than not allows Klang to setup a Shift Gear on whatever the opponent brings in to stop Huntail. One threat which these two struggle to beat is Gourgeist, which is where RestTalk Zweilous comes in. This is another mon who appreciates Coil's accuracy boosts in order to negate the downsides of Hustle. It's worth mentioning that Klang can run Magnet Rise to suprise any opponents hoping to beat it with ground moves, although Substitute is generally preferred.
