Moves
========
Ice Beam provides super effective coverage against Ground-types in Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Gliscor, allowing Mega Latias to consistently check them. Hidden Power Ground is mainly used to hit Heatran, but it also deals better damage than Ice Beam to the majority of Steel-types in the tier. It is used instead of Earthquake to avoid being weakened by Tapu Bulu's Grassy Terrain, which is quite commonly paired with Heatran, though Earthquake can be used to hit Heatran as well as Magearna much harder if you're not worried about Grassy Terrain. Alternatively, Thunder provides fantastic coverage alongside Ice Beam, hitting Water-types like Ash-Greninja, Manaphy, and Gyarados for huge damage. It is used over Thunderbolt because without it, Mega Latias fails to consistently 2HKO Rest Manaphy. However, it does give up Mega Latias's ability to check Taunt or Toxic Heatran. With Thunder Wave, Mega Latias can cripple a number of Pokemon that otherwise wouldn't be overly threatened by it, such as Greninja, Mega Alakazam, and Volcarona. Wish is a good alternative that allows Mega Latias to support its teammates, especially ones that lack reliable recovery like Heatran, Ferrothorn, and Celesteela. Refresh is a niche utility option that gives Mega Latias the ability to heal off status effects from Pokemon like Rotom-W, Zapdos, and most notably Heatran, effectively making Mega Latias a hard counter to it.
Set Details
========
Maximum HP investment is used to let Mega Latias take hits from the likes of Garchomp, Kartana, Gliscor, and Tapu Bulu as comfortably as possible. Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature is required to outspeed Landorus-T, Kartana, Garchomp, and Mega Medicham.
Usage Tips
========
This set should be used to switch into Pokemon like Heatran, Kartana, Gliscor, and Choice Band Tapu Bulu. However, be sure to scout for Knock Off from Kartana and Megahorn from Tapu Bulu. From here, you have a few options. If Mega Latias has taken notable damage, Roost should be used in order to continually switch into these Pokemon. If not, Mega Latias's utility option is typically how it can make progress; Thunder Wave will let it cripple Pokemon that might try to switch in, like Ash-Greninja, Magearna, Tapu Lele, and Volcarona, whereas Wish can be passed to Mega Latias's teammates to heal them. Avoid status if possible, as Toxic puts Mega Latias on a timer, while paralysis rids Mega Latias of its important Speed tier and ruins its matchup against Pokemon it needs to outspeed to beat like Garchomp and Kartana. If the opponent has a Pursuit trapper like Tyranitar or Weavile, try to not be too obvious with when you bring in Mega Latias, though even with perfect play it will be an uphill battle.
Team Options
========
Mega Latias fits best on balance and bulky offense because its defensive niche is so important to these teams, checking numerous breakers that can otherwise run over these archetypes. Generally, Mega Latias is very self sufficient, so it requires little team support; however, there are still some Pokemon that it pairs well with. Ferrothorn and Clefable create a classic core with Mega Latias, having great defensive synergy together while also forming a hazard stacking core to chip down the opposition. If running Thunder Wave, Pokemon like Ash-Greninja and Reuniclus fit nicely with Mega Latias, as they appreciate it paralyzing the likes of Toxapex, Mega Alakazam, Ferrothorn, and Tyranitar. Pokemon that lack reliable recovery like Heatran, Celesteela, and Rotom-W appreciate support from Mega Latias, as it can keep them healthy with Wish.
