OU Azumarill (revamp)

[OVERVIEW]

Azumarill is a niche option on hyper offense and rain teams due to the combined potency of Belly Drum and Huge Power, granting it a monstrous Attack stat after it boosts up. At +6, Azumarill obliterates Ferrothorn, Tangrowth, and Toxapex with its coverage moves, which can be essential on rain teams due to these three walls specifically being annoying to break. Azumarill's typing also makes it a usable offensive check against Ash-Greninja, which is also appreciated by offensive teams that often contain a lack of reliable defensive answers to top wallbreakers. However, Azumarill's major lack of Speed forces it to rely on priority Aqua Jet. This leaves it shut down by Tapu Lele’s Psychic Terrain and by various faster Pokemon such as Kartana and Rotom-W that can take a hit and retaliate.
Additionally, Azumarill usually only gets one opportunity to set up Belly Drum, which forces it to be preserved for late-game to sweep once its checks have been chipped downed enough or removed. However, Z-Belly Drum can offer Azumarill a second opportunity of setting up in some rare instances.

Moves

Aqua Jet gives Azumarill priority and allows it to bypass Pokemon that would otherwise be able to revenge kill it before boosts, such as Tapu Koko, Tornadus-T, and Mega Medicham. Play Rough is Azumarill's main attack to remove Tapu Fini, Clefable, Mega Heracross, Mega Sableye, and physically defensive Tangrowth with little effort. Knock Off breaks straight through and OHKOes Ferrothorn, Toxapex, and Tangrowth smoothly.

Set Details
========

Normalium Z gives Azumarill access to Z-Belly Drum, which restores its health back up to full before it cuts its health in half and gives it easier setup opportunities. This is the preferred item, as it allows Azumarill to use its decent defensive typing to check Ash-Greninja and Heatran.

Usage Tips
========

Realistically, Belly Drum can only be set up once in a match, so Azumarill should only set up late-game once its checks have been chipped or removed. Azumarill should not accumulate too much chip damage, as it lessens its opportunities to set up Belly Drum because its low Speed stat usually makes Azumarill take damage before it can set up. Azumarill should be brought in through a pivot or revenge kill before sweeping to prevent it from taking any major damage. Azumarill can also revenge kill Landorus-T, Volcarona, and Excadrill itself, and it can check Ash-Greninja before sweeping due to Z-Belly Drum restoring its health.

Team Options
========

Pelipper provides rain, which allows a +6 Aqua Jet to hit even harder. Ash-Greninja can use Azumarill to remove its biggest annoyances in Toxapex and Tangrowth to let it freely rain terror on the opponent's team. Mega Swampert also has issues with Grass-type walls like Ferrothorn and physically defensive Tangrowth, and Azumarill can break through these Pokemon for it. Entry hazard setters such as Excadrill, Landorus-T, and Greninja set down Stealth Rock or Spikes for Azumarill to score chip damage on Azumarill's checks. Excadrill can also break through Rotom-W with Earthquake thanks to Mold Breaker. Magearna and Tornadus-T are able to bring Azumarill onto the field while protecting it from any possible damage from the opponent. Tapu Koko provides dual screens for Azumarill to let it set up Belly Drum a lot safer and can pivot Azumarill in safely.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A Sitrus Berry can be used over Normalium Z if there is already another Pokemon wielding a Z-Move. However, this item is a massive downgrade fron Normalium Z and prevents Azumarill from checking Ash-Greninja and Heatran, as it cannot freely check the opposing team as much without the Z-Move to heal itself up afterwards. A trapping set consisting of Whirlpool, Perish Song, Protect, and Toxic with Sap Sipper as the ability allows Azumarill to defensively check Kartana while also trapping and removing Heatran, Ferrothorn, and Toxapex, but this set mainly relies on surprise factor to catch the opponent off guard and is terribly easy to play around once the opponent knows what the set is. A Choice Band grants Azumarill immediate power, but Azumarill would be widely outclassed by other offensive Water-types such as Ash-Greninja and Mega Swampert. Its STAB moves are also pretty ineffective once it's locked into a move.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Tapu Lele**: Tapu Lele's Psychic Terrain prevents Azumarill from outprioritizing anything that outspeeds it with Aqua Jet. This leaves it massively vulnerable under the effects of the terrain, and Tapu Lele can revenge kill it smoothly.

**Faster Pokemon**: Azumarill's pitiful Speed leaves it outsped by the majority of the metagame. Magearna, Rotom-W, and Kyurem-B all outpace Azumarill and can finish it off with their coverage. The latter two also resist Aqua Jet.

**Grass-types**: Grass-types like Kartana, Tapu Bulu, Serperior, and Mega Venusaur all outspeed Azumarill and knock it out with their main attacks.

A Sitrus Berry is an alternative if the Z-Crystal must be handed to another Pokemon on the team. It restores Azumarill’s health after a Belly Drum, but it restricts Azumarill to mostly the late-game once it’s free to sweep.
I'd move this to oo, sitrus azu is honestly a pretty big downgrade from Z-Belly Drum and almost makes it not worth using, you usually wanna save your z slot for azu if youre gonna use it
  • Play Rough is Azumarill’s main attack to remove Tapu Fini, Clefable, Mega Heracross, and Mega Sableye with little effort.
Move Tangrowth up here cause phys def is easily the most popular variant rn

Which often is clearer than that, seeing how offensive teams often just don't have reliable answers to wallbreakers.
  • However, Azumarill’s major lack of any Speed forces it to rely on Aqua Jet as priority. This leaves it shutdown by Tapu Lele and various faster Pokemon such as Kartana and Rotom-W can take a hit and retaliate back.
  • Azumarill usually only gets one opportunity to set up Belly Drum which forces it to be preserved for the late-game to sweep once its checks have been chipped enough or removed. Z-Belly Drum gives Azumarill a bit more flexibility with this.
  • Azumarill also faces competition against Belly Drum Kommo-o who can set up more easily against the opponent with a Substitute while Azumarill doesn’t have this virtue as it generally cannot afford to drop any coverage. Specify that it only competes with Azumarill on hyper offense teams; Azumarill is better on rain teams. I think this kind of misses the point, though. Azumarill competes with Kommo-o because it's a better check to Ash-Greninja, Ferrothorn, and Blacephalon, not because Kommo-o has an easier time using Belly Drum.

  • Aqua Jet is Azumarill’s strongest form of priority to get it past Pokemon that might attempt to revenge kill it after it boosts up such as Tapu Koko, Tornadus-T, and Zapdos.
  • Play Rough is Azumarill’s main attack to remove Tapu Fini, Clefable, Mega Heracross, Mega Sableye, and Physically Defensive Tangrowth with little effort.
  • Knock Off breaks straight through and OHKOs Ferrothorn, Toxapex, and Tangrowth smoothly.
Set Details
========

  • Max Attack paired with an Adamant nature maximizes Azumarill’s damage output as a Speed boosting nature doesn’t pass any notable benchmarks. This is unnecessary filler content.
  • A Normalium Z restores Azumarill’s health back up to full before it cuts its health in half with a Z-Belly Drum. This is the preferred item as it allows Azumarill to use its decent defensive typing to check Ash Greninja and Mega Latias.
  • Huge Power further augments Azumarill’s strength by doubling its Attack stat. This is also unnecessary filler content.
Usage Tips
========

  • Realistically, Belly Drum can only be set up once in a match so Azumarill should only set up during the late-game once its checks have been chipped or removed.
  • Azumarill should not accumulate too much chip damage as it lessens its opportunities to set up Belly Drum as its low Speed stat usually makes Azumarill go last.
  • Azumarill should be brought in through a pivot or revenge kill before sweeping to prevent it from taking any major damage. What Pokemon should Azumarill aim to revenge kill?
  • In some cases, Normalium Z variants of Azumarill can soft check Ash Greninja. This only tells me what Z-Belly Drum does, not how I should use it. Should I save it for Ash-Greninja? Or immediately use it after I switch in?
Team Options
========

  • Entry hazard setters such as Excadrill, Landorus-T, and Greninja set down Stealth Rock and Spikes respectively for Azumarill to score chip damage on Azumarill’s checks. Excadrill can also punish Rotom-W with Earthquake. I'm not sure if punish is the right word, since they'll never switch into Excadrill.
  • Araquanid and Ribombee offer Sticky Web to Azumarill which can be a major component in orchestrating a sweep as it reduces the speed of every grounded Pokemon on the opponent’s team. These teams are pretty irrelevant when compared to both classic HO and rain, so it doesn't really deserve a mention. At least not before rain gets mentioned.
  • Magearna, Pelipper, and Tornadus-T all are able to pivot Azumarill onto the field while protecting it from any possible damage from the opponent. How do they protect it from any possible damage?
  • Tapu Koko provides dual screens to Azumarill to let it set up Belly Drum a lot safer. Tapu Koko also can pivot Azumarill in safely. Move this below.
  • Ash Greninja can use Azumarill to removes its biggest annoyances Toxapex and Tangrowth to let it freely rain terror on the opponent’s team. I'd also like to see a mention of Mega Swampert.

  • A Sitrus Berry can be used over Normalium if there is already another Pokémon wielding a Z-move. But this item is a massive downgrade to Normalium and prevents Azumarill from checking Ash Greninja and Mega Latias as it cannot freely check the opposing team as much.
  • A trapping set consisting of Whirlpool, Perish Song, Protect, Toxic, and Sap Sipper as the ability allows Azumarill to defensively check Kartana while also trapping and removing Heatran, Ferrothorn, and Toxapex but this set mainly relies on surprise factor to catch the opponent off guard and this set is terribly easy to play around once the opponent knows what it is.
  • A Choice Band grants Azumarill immediate power but it is widely outclassed by other offensive Water-types such as Ash Greninja and Mega Swampert. Its STAB moves also aren't that great once Azumarill has locked itself into a move.
  • Liquidation can be used over Play Rough for a strong Water STAB that can be boosted under the Rain but Play Rough is overall better for annihilating Tapu Fini and Kommo-o much quicker. It's never an option. Either remove this completely, or explain why there's absolutely no reason to use Liquidation.

This leaves it shutdown by Tapu Lele and various faster Pokemon
Nitpicky but say "Psychic Terrain" or "Tapu Lele's Psychic Terrain"

Azumarill also faces competition against Belly Drum Kommo-o on Hyper Offense who's a better check against Ash Greninja, Ferrothorn, and Blacephalon.
Is this implying that azu is a check to ferrothorn and blace ?_?
Honestly I'd just remove this, Azu is pretty bad on HO and it's not as if every HO uses a BD sweeper.
I'd rather see a sentence about how it competes for a spot on rain against stuff like Gren/Kingdra as a water type or Magearna as a Gren check.

Aqua Jet is Azumarill's strongest form of priority to get it past Pokemon that might attempt to revenge kill it after it boosts up such as Tapu Koko, Tornadus-T, and Zapdos
Nitpicky but change "might attempt to" into "would otherwise be able to". No one would actually attempt this knowing that it has aqua jet.
Also Zapdos lives +6 jet if healthy, so maybe remove it or replace it with smth like M-Zam.

A Normalium Z restores Azumarill's health back up to full before it cuts its health in half with a Z-Belly Drum.
Which makes it easier to find set up opportunities.

This is the preferred item as it allows Azumarill to use its decent defensive typing to check Ash Greninja and Mega Latias.
Not sure Mlatias is the best example. Maybe replace it with Heatran.

Azumarill can also revenge kill Landorus-T, Volcarona, and Victini itself.
Excadrill > Victini

Try to avoid making Azumarill take any significant damage before sweeping though as it has a difficult time setting up due to its low Speed.
You basically said the same thing at the beginning of usage tips ._.

Team Options
========
Organize this so it starts with the rain teammates (the best teammates) and then the HO teammates

Araquanid and Ribombee offer Sticky Web to Azumarill which can be a major component in orchestrating a sweep as it reduces the speed of every grounded Pokemon on the opponent’s team.
Did Jordy not say to remove this?

Magearna, Pelipper, and Tornadus-T all are able to pivot Azumarill onto the field while protecting it from any possible damage from the opponent
You should actually mention that Pelipper provides rain which makes a +6 jet alot more deadly. No one uses Pelipper because it can pivot lol.

But this item is a massive downgrade to Normalium and prevents Azumarill from checking Ash Greninja and Mega Latias as it cannot freely check the opposing team as much without the Z-Move to heal itself up afterwards.
Same as above with Heatran > Mlati.

Tag me when this is done so I can look over it again before I give 3/3

Remove or replace Zapdos. There are better examples.

Pelipper provides Rain itself which allows for a +6 Aqua Jet to be more difficult to handle without Psychic Terrain
I dont think you need the "without psychic terrain" here.

Just make sure you go over it before sending it to gp.
