Personally, I think this is definitely a step in the right direction for an industry which has a history of seemingly turning a blind eye to something which has been totally rife within it for years. The fact that this has come out of the allegations that have been put forward about him, as well as the statement that the Academy has made alongside his expulsion which I have quoted above, shows that people within the industry are no longer just going to ignore behaviour such as his while also acting as a way of saying to women who are getting into the industry (and, indeed, those who are already in it) that it isn't an expectation that this is just part of the job. It is the first step towards what I hope is going to be a big attitude shift within the industry in years to come.Statement from the Academy Board of Governors said:The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors met today to discuss the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, and has voted well in excess of the required two-thirds majority to immediately expel him from the Academy. We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of wilful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over. Whats at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society. The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify.
