WARSTORY: jira vs. Baris // Clash of Germany's Elite

Okay, first off: I did NOT actively take part in this battle, I was nothing more than a mere spectator. I do have the permission to make a warstory out of this, though.
I also apologize for my probably bad English, I am from Germany as well
Comments will be omitted as they are also in German. But now let's start with the two teams.

Baris and jira, two pros with playing styles as different as black and white. This is a battle not only between two of the best players out there, but also between offense and defence, sweeper team vs. stall.

Baris' team:

Baris plays full offense, this heavy-hitting team boosted his ladder ranking on the Official Server up to rank 1! The success of this team is overwhelmingly impressive, as is the player behind it - Baris, Germany's best ladder player (He managed to place himself on Smogon Ladder ranks 1, 2 and 5 at the same time a few days ago, so nothing about sheer luck or stuff ;P)

jira is using a stall team that Vertigo developed. Vertigo is one of the very best stall players ever, but unfortunately he doesn't play DP anymore. During the short period of time in which he played, he easily reached rank 2 on the ladder, though. But jira also is a great player, surprising everyone in the WCoP III by demolishing many pro players.

The set-up itself is promising a great match - and I definitely don't lie if I say it became one! But now enough pre-battle talk, let's finally begin! (After explaining the colors I' use, tho lol)

Bold blue - Baris' Pokémon
Bold red - jira's Pokémon
Bold - The moves and the damage.
Italic - My comments
Everything else will be put in plain black text.

Leftovers, Sandstream and stuff will be omitted. Standard Ruleset (No Strict Damage Clause), played on Pokemonexperte Server.

jira. sent out Hippowdon (lvl 100 Hippowdon ?).
Baris sent out Deoxys-e (lvl 100 Deoxys-e).

vs.

Deoxys-e is exerting its pressure!
Hippowdon's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
A sandstorm brewed!

>> The leadoffs are Hippowdon and Deoxys-E. Baris is at a slight advantage here, but Ice Beam is not able to OHKO, so jira decides to use Earthquake and severely damage that incredibly fast thing.

vs.

Deoxys-e used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
Hippowdon used Earthquake.
Deoxys-e lost 64% of its health.

- 30%
- 100%

>> Deoxys putting up Stealth Rock was not what jira predicted (he said that himself and he didn't know Baris' team beforehand) - but because defensive Deoxys can't do anything to Hippowdon, jira decides to put up some Stealth Rock himself.

vs.

Deoxys-e used Taunt.
Hippowdon fell for the taunt!
Hippowdon used Stealth Rock.
Hippowdon can't use Stealth Rock after the taunt!

- 24%
- 100%

>> Unfortunately for jira, Baris predicted this move and used Taunt. The Earthquake is obvious, but it's no need to overpredict this early in the game as jira doesn't know Baris' team yet.

vs.

Deoxys-e used Light Screen.
A barrier was formed!
Hippowdon used Earthquake.
Deoxys-e lost 62% of its health.
Baris's Deoxys-e fainted.

- 0%
- 100%
Baris 5 - 6 jira

>> Baris sacrifices his Deoxys-E in order to set up Light Screen - and according to him he always does that. So it's not a bad move, Deoxys did everything that was needed, set up Stealth Rock and Light Screen and taunted Hippo. It also allows for a free switch-in, which is extremely useful for offensively-minded players.

vs.

Baris switched in Gyarados (lvl 100 Gyarados ?).
Gyarados's intimidate cut Hippowdon's attack!

>> Baris switches into Gyarados, because Hippowdon can't do anything to the giant sea serpent, even with its great defense stat.

vs.

jira. switched in Skarmory (lvl 100 Skarmory ?).
Pointed stones dug into Skarmory.
Skarmory lost 12% of its health.
Gyarados used Dragon Dance.
Gyarados's attack was raised.
Gyarados's speed was raised.

- 94% / +1 Atk / +1 Spd
- 94%

>> Because Baris obviously has the advantage in the set-up, jira switches to Skarmory. The metal bird is not the best counter, but it usually handles Gyarados quite nicely...

vs.

Gyarados used Waterfall.
Skarmory lost 46% of its health.
Gyarados lost 10% of its health.
Skarmory used Brave Bird.
Gyarados lost 39% of its health.
Skarmory was hit by recoil!
Skarmory lost 13% of its health.

- 39% / +1 Atk / +1 Spd
- 40%

>> ...as long as Gyarados isn't holding Life Orb... Baris was one of the first players to use LO-Gyara, as it is nearly uncounterable after a DD. Baris' Gyarados looks very threatening, as it is able to 2HKO almost everything. Fortunately for jira, though, Life Orb and Sandstream damage add up quickly, so it can be brought down through clever switch-stalling. jira's stall team has no problems recovering damage if given the opportunity, so his biggest concern should be to keep as many of his Pokémon at an acceptable health as possible. Otherwise he won't be able to use his recovery moves effectively and it would be game over - this is made especially difficult because Stealth Rock makes switching really hard now.

vs.

jira. switched in Cresselia (lvl 100 Cresselia ?).
Pointed stones dug into Cresselia.
Cresselia lost 12% of its health.
Gyarados used Waterfall.
Cresselia lost 47% of its health.
Gyarados lost 10% of its health.

- 23% / +1 Atk / +1 Spd
- 47%

>> And that is exactly what jira is trying to do. Cresselia takes huge damage but still has the possibility to recover later. Gyarados is losing health really fast, but it still has two more turns in which it can wreack havoc on jira's team.

vs.

jira. switched in Forretress (lvl 100 Forretress ?).
Pointed stones dug into Forretress.
Forretress lost 12% of its health.
Gyarados used Waterfall.
Forretress lost 52% of its health.
Gyarados lost 10% of its health.

- 7% / +1 Atk / +1 Spd
- 42%

>> Not much to say, just like explained during the last turn... Last turn for Gyarados now.

vs.

Gyarados used Waterfall.
Forretress lost 48% of its health.
jira.'s Forretress fainted.
Gyarados lost 10% of its health.
Baris's Gyarados fainted.
Gyarados's light screen wore off!

- 0%
- 0%
Baris 4 - 5 jira

>> jira stops Gyara's rampage by sacrificing his Forretress. Due to its lack of reliable recovery it was the least valuable Pokémon on his team, the loss of a spinner is a heavy blow, tho. Stealth Rock can't be removed now and will definitely give problems to defensive teams. Baris is at an advantage because jira's Pokémon are hurt and his offensively-minded team can finish weakened stallers easily.

vs.

jira. switched in Hippowdon (lvl 100 Hippowdon ?).
Baris switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
Pointed stones dug into Hippowdon.
Hippowdon lost 6% of its health.

- 94%
- 100%

>> Gengar handles all of the Pokés that Baris has seen so far, so he decides to switch it in. jira goes with Hippo, mostly because it is at full health and can act before wasting a turn to recover. He also needs to set up some Stealth Rock of his own as soon as possible.

vs.

jira. switched in Blissey (lvl 100 Blissey ?).
Pointed stones dug into Blissey.
Blissey lost 12% of its health.
Gengar used Shadow Ball.
It doesn't affect Blissey...

- 88%
- 82%

>> Obvious switch, because Blissey is a nice Gengar-counter. Unfortunately, jira forgot to give his Blissey Leftovers... In this case it is not gamebreaking, though, so the match-up is still clearly in jira's favour.

vs.

Baris switched in Lucario (lvl 100 Lucario ?).
Blissey used Ice Beam.
It's not very effective...
Lucario lost 18% of its health.

- 82%
- 76%

>> Lucario switches in on an Ice Beam attack from jira's Blissey. Because of its resistance against ice-moves and Blisseys average SAtk-Stat it only takes a small amount of damage. Close Combat would be a definite OHKO, so jira decides to switch out.

vs.

jira. switched in Hippowdon (lvl 100 Hippowdon ?).
Pointed stones dug into Hippowdon.
Hippowdon lost 6% of its health.
Baris switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).

- 88%
- 100%

>> Baris does what he is known for - agressive prediction even in the early parts of the game. And it pays off, Gengar vs Hippo is the match-up he hoped for.

vs.

jira. switched in Blissey (lvl 100 Blissey ?).
Pointed stones dug into Blissey.
Blissey lost 12% of its health.
Gengar used Focus Blast.
It's super effective!
Blissey lost 30% of its health.

- 82%
- 27%

>> Baris predicted correctly yet again. Focus Blast brings Blissey in KO range. This is the situation in which jira regrets the lack of Lefties-recovery the most. Still, jira is able to make important conclusions. From the damage Blissey took he derives that Baris' Gengar is Choice Scarfed with a timid nature. With this newly won information, he makes his next move.

vs.

jira. switched in Spiritomb (lvl 100 Spiritomb ?).
Spiritomb is exerting its pressure!
Pointed stones dug into Spiritomb.
Spiritomb lost 12% of its health.
Gengar used Focus Blast.
It doesn't affect Spiritomb...

- 76%
- 88%

>> jira takes the opportunity to switch in Spiritomb and get a free Calm Mind...

vs.

Baris switched in Metagross (lvl 100 Metagross).
Spiritomb used Calm Mind.
Spiritomb's special attack was raised.
Spiritomb's special defence was raised.

- 100%
- 88% / +1 SAtk / +1 SDef

>> Metagross is a major problem for jira, because his Skarmory is at low health (40%) and his Forry is gone. The best thing he can do is weaken it as much as possible.

vs.

Metagross used Meteor Mash.
Spiritomb lost 46% of its health.
Metagross's attack was raised.
Spiritomb used Dark Pulse.
Metagross lost 42% of its health.

- 64% / +1 Atk
- 42% / +1 SAtk / +1 SDef

The Atk-Raise makes everything even worse for jira. Not wanting to lose his Spiritomb, he has to decide on what to switch in now.

vs.

jira. switched in Skarmory (lvl 100 Skarmory ?).
Pointed stones dug into Skarmory.
Skarmory lost 12% of its health.
Metagross used Earthquake.
It doesn't affect Skarmory...

- 70% / +1 Atk
- 34%

>> Fortunately for jira, Baris overpredicts and uses Earthquake. Otherwise it would probably have been Game Over already. In order to get rid of the Atk-raise, jira tries to PHaze Meta away - praying that it doesn't pack Thunder Punch...

vs.

Metagross used Ice Punch.
Skarmory lost 24% of its health.
Skarmory used Whirlwind.
Baris switched in Lucario (lvl 100 Lucario ?).

- 82%
- 16%

>> Lucario is able to easily KO Skarmory at 16%. With Stealth Rocks up, jira only has two viable possibilities: 1) Sacrifice Skarmory and grant some other Poké a safe switch-in; 2) Switch out, risk getting hit very hard and keep Skarmory as death fodder. In this case, option 1 is the superior because jira can't afford to take more damage...

vs.

Lucario used Close Combat.
A critical hit!
Skarmory lost 90% of its health.
jira.'s Skarmory fainted.
Lucario's defence was lowered.
Lucario's special defence was lowered.
Lucario lost 10% of its health.

- 72% / -1 Def / -1 SDef
- 0%
Baris 4 - 4 jira

>> OMG A CRIT! Well, good thing jira didn't switch ;P

vs.

jira. switched in Hippowdon (lvl 100 Hippowdon ?).
Pointed stones dug into Hippowdon.
Hippowdon lost 6% of its health.

- 72% / -1 Def / -1 SDef
- 100%

>> Hippowdon is a great counter for physical Lucarios, so Baris will need to switch out.

vs.

Baris switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
Hippowdon used Ice Fang.
Gengar lost 33% of its health.

- 37%
- 100%

>> The Gengar-switch was quite obvious, but jira couldn't just go right back to Blissey because another Focus Blast would finish it off. So his best bet was to just go with Ice Fang and damage Baris' ghost. jira already knows that Baris is using a timid ScarfGar, and he expects him to predict a Blissey switch-in. Therefore he uses Ice Fang again - Hippowdon easily takes one Focus Blast. Even if he mispredicts here and Gengar uses HP{ice}, his Blissey would live and Softboil up again. So, in any case, Ice Fang would be the optimal move here.

vs.

Gengar used Focus Blast.
Hippowdon lost 48% of its health.
Hippowdon used Ice Fang.
Gengar lost 31% of its health.
Baris's Gengar fainted.

- 0%
- 58%
Baris 3 - 4 jira

>> Alright, that worked like jira planned. Now he has to see if he can Slack Off on the incoming Pokémon...

vs.

Baris switched in Garchomp (lvl 100 Garchomp ?).

>> Baris is using adamant CB-Chomp, which pretty much 2HKOs anything that doesn't resist its moves. And before anyone accuses him of copying it from husk - he used it before husk did ;D

vs.

Garchomp used Outrage.
Garchomp went on a rampage!
Hippowdon lost 50% of its health.
Hippowdon used Slack Off.
Hippowdon restored 50% of its health.

- 100%
- 64%

>> Luckily for jira, Garchomp only dealt minimum damage, otherwise it would have been over now. The next move is quite obvious, so no further commentary on that one...

vs.

Garchomp used Outrage.
Hippowdon lost 52% of its health.
Hippowdon used Slack Off.
Hippowdon restored 50% of its health.
Garchomp's rampage ended.
Garchomp became confused!

- 100% / confused
- 68%

>> There is no point in staying in for Baris, so jira can take the following free turn to get his Hippo's health back up to 100%

vs.

Baris switched in Metagross (lvl 100 Metagross).
Hippowdon used Slack Off.
Hippowdon restored 50% of its health.

- 76%
- 100%

>> The one great threat that jira sees is Explosion: If Meta manages to explode on his Hippo, Garchomp will sweep through the rest of his team. If, however he mispredicts an Explosion and switches in Spiritomb, that will faint and Metagross might explode on Hippo later on, without any fear of being outpredicted with a ghost. Considering Baris' previous moves, it's quite save to assume that he'll go for an Earthquake or something similar first.

vs.

Metagross used Ice Punch.
It's super effective!
Hippowdon lost 33% of its health.
Hippowdon used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Metagross lost 64% of its health.

- 18%
- 73%

>> If Metagross packs Explosion, now would be the time to use it. To play it save, jira switches in Spiritomb - even if it's KOd by Meta he can tell that Baris' Meta probably doesn't pack Explosion.

vs.

jira. switched in Spiritomb (lvl 100 Spiritomb ?).

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading this warstory and didn't fall asleep halfway through - I honestly didn't expect it to become THAT long @.@
Also, I hope that my English was good enough and stuff like that xD
Feedback appreciated!

Thanks for reading!

The format is good although not anything new. However it did make it easy to read.

I was actually very impressed with the battle itself and the prediction the most. I enjoyed the pressure baris team put on jira and I like how Jira did not rely solely on stalling him out. jira played somewhat offensively for a defensive team which was rather intesting.

I am glad that you were able to save it and it was nice to get an unbiased opinion from a spectator.

5-star warstory right here.

Yea stalling is the best
Good warstory and congrats to jaris for winning the match Baris can be a difficult opponent

If Baris is German that means both No1 and 2 of this American server are European ^^

That was a great match indeed. And no one can say that Husk was ever the first one to use CBChomp and everyone copied him, CBChomp has been in the analysis since the beginning of D/P. Though, admittedly, when people see top players use it then it can have that band wagon effect because a top player uses it and everyone else wants to try it/use it.

It's pretty scary when a stall team has to face down a Gyarados with a Light Screen up for protection against special attacks as from the looks of it Cresselia probably was the true counter to Gyarados but the screen stopped that from happening when Gyarados was at so much health. The presence of stealth rock also made a huge difference for the offensive team as Cress swapping into 12% damage *possibly* ruined its chance to take it out with Charge Beam. (Cress only took 47% on the swap not considering stealth rock, though 252/252 Bold Cresselia still takes 46-54% from that Gyarados build so it might have taken Cress out either way without Cress being able to harm it back).

Good match, fun to read. The stall team never really got setup, it just let how frail the offensive team was and took advantage of that to wear it down rather than through rocks/spikes.

Great warstory, the formatting was excellent and your english is better than a lot of posters here.

A great offensive vs stall game, that still shows stall is viable. :]
He lost because chomp hit itself in confusion, that doesn't show that stall is viable at all, if anything it shows that offensive vs. stall can be won as easy as any other matchup because it was so close.

I really dislike reading OU warstories, as I find them repetitive, but I found this one very interesting to read. Well done! :)

Also, some of the best formatting I've seen in a while.

He lost because chomp hit itself in confusion, that doesn't show that stall is viable at all, if anything it shows that offensive vs. stall can be won as easy as any other matchup because it was so close.
Which is precisely why it shows that stall is viable.

I really liked the fact that it was stall vs sweeping teams with stall actually winning(altough there was hax in the end, but whatever.) Cool team archetypes pitted against each other. The prediction was a lot of fun to see. Also the pictures are another thing that really add to these stories and made it that much easier to read. The warstories have been pretty good for awhile now.

i love the effort that you put into listing the HP percentages and adding the sprites, though stuff like

"Baris was one of the first players to use LO-Gyara"

is a bit over the top, dont you think? lol. i know you want to play up Baris but come on

@Jumpman16: Well, I think he was ;)
I practically never saw LO-Gyara earlier, it was either BulkyDos or offensive Gyara with Lefties. On rare occasions, you ran into STalk-Gyara, but I never actually met anyone with a LO'd version =)
That was, of course, changed after husk's Team Astral Projection, but this team was developed before that.

But if you think that LO-Gyara was played earlier, then I won't argue aganst it - I've probably only missed it all the time... Can happen xD

Yeah, he certainly wasn't one of the first. If you're using an offensive team, you have to have aggresive prediction; that's how the style is played, not what Baris should be known for.

Still, I loved the match. To be honest, warstories aren't exactly my 'cup of tea', but I know a lot of good German players through NetBattle and Shoddy, so I had to check this particular one out. Great match!

An otherwise good warstory annoyed me because of the comments about who used various sets first and all that nonsense. Putting an item with a pokemon isn't anything special. Just focus on the game next time instead of trying to make these "German Elites" sound impressive.

The comments were a bit lacking in some points and I can't see some of the images. Its obvious that a lot of effort was put into this. The battle was really great. Predictions were entertaining. Overall, it was an impressive warstory.

Okay, I will change some of the commentary when I come back on tomorrow...

yeah you definitely put too much effort into clarifying that baris didn't steal anything from husk and that he was one of the first to use specific sets :/

good warstory nonetheless

Ausgezeichnet.. Ok, I clearly need to practice my German more often!

However I found the warstory to be quite enjoyable, unlike others of the same style. More or less, most of the predictions were quite spot on and the format was easy to follow.

really great war story. good quality battlers, good battle and great formatting.

i really didnt care about the husk comments. some people need to get over their fierce love for everything smogon.

The battle was great and I know you wanted to prove that this wasn't just two slouches battling, but all of the sucking up was kind of overdone. I used Life Orb Gyarados back in September and I know for a fact that I wasn't the first. Even if this guy was actually the first to use it...who gives a shit? I've used hundreds of movesets and spreads that nobody else will ever think of and that hardly makes me unique. That is the entire point of the game.

It really was a good match though, solid warstory.

But surprise, surprise, another match comes down to a 50/50 chance against Garchomp :(
