Victim of the Week 37 - Mega Mawile

Up next we have the Deceiver Pokemon, Mawile! It has a good typing in Steel/Fairy, great abilities in Intimidate(pre-mega) and Huge Power, along with the movepool to support it, with options such as Fire Fang, Knock Off and Sucker Punch. It is a bit slow, but that means it can be used under Trick Room. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions will be closed in 4 days from now. Good Luck!

x4 resists dual STAB and Magma Storm OHKO's 252 HP Mega Mawile. This is pretty much standard set I use to trap and eliminate the likes of Celesteela, Chansey, Cresseila, physically defensive Toxapex, and other problematic walls. 140 Speed allows Heatran to outspeed neutral-nature'd 252 Speed Celesteela to make sure it is taunted and doesn't use Leech Seed or Autotomize.

EV spread is set to live +2 Knock Off which is probably the hardest relevant blow that Mega Mawile can throw at Heatran. This means Heatran with my EV spread is able to reliably counter Mega Mawile even when Trick Room is up. I gave 212 HP because of my OCD to get that HP of 16n + 1 to maximize Leftovers' efficiency.

+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 212 HP / 116+ Def Heatran: 162-191 (83.9 - 98.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

40 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Mawile-Mega: 152-180 (96.8 - 114.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

Gliscor doesn't fear the STABs of Mega-Mawile and can setup as an incredible physical wall. Just use Protect on turn 1 to activate Poison Heal before Mawile uses Knock Off. Then things are going quickly (or not).

overheat is for that purpose as well as being one of the main reasons to use heattom in the first place, volt switch is a fantastic move that rotom should never forgo just because of how good momentum is, hp ice is for mence/chomp, the last slot can be for doing slightly more damage for your main stab without pivoting, which may be undesirable depending on the situation, or if your team hates p2 you can slap a random toxic on it; seeing as it's a boltbeam resist. wisp is something that very few mons like taking on a switchin, and exists mostly as a noncommittal option on a predicted switch if you feel like your predictions with other moves may be punished

The logic behind this is that it is faster under Trick Room and can burn Mawile before it can do anything, tank a hit if no trick room anyway and proceed to burn it, and Mummy can strip Mawile of Huge Power, pressuring Mawile to switch. Z-Haze functions as recovery, as well as ridding Mawile of Swords dance boosts.

252+ Atk Mawile-Mega Play Rough vs. 252 HP / 196+ Def Cofagrigus: 42-51 (25.4 - 30.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

If both burned and Mummy, it does minimal damage, failing to KO Cofagrigus, even if it gets high rolls on all it's moves. It'll almost never land a sucker punch, but I decided to throw it in for the sake of calcs.

Offensive calcs:

Kanon 90's Mega Camerupt because Earth Power DOES NOT MISS UNLIKE MAGMA STORM

Okay onto serious reasons, the fact that Mega Camerupt counters Mega Mawile in Trick Room (where it mostly runs rampant) by being slower is pretty good imo.

voting for RNGIsFatal's Heatran.

Nice, clean and splashable way to remove Mawile. Rotom-H would be my second choice but with the increased popularity of Stealth Rocks, I'm not really a fan of anything that is weak to it. Gliscor sounds cool but not resisting Play Rough means it can't switch-in as easily as the other two and I think Cofagrigus & Camerupt are too restricted by the kind of team they're supposed to be in, so that leaves me with Heatran.

I really like Camerupt too but Cofag has the added benefit of dealing with physical attackers more easily in general, particularly Kangaskhan. Heatran loses to Sub Focus Punch so nty

Victim of the Week #38 - Heatran

Up next we have the Lava Dome Pokemon, Heatran! It has an incredible typing in Fire/Steel, great 91/106/106 defenses and a good movepool. Heatran can run ulky sets, with options like Magma Storm + Toxic to trap and cripple targets, or Lava Plume to try to burn physical attackers. However, it can also run offensive sets as well, using Z-Crystals or Choice Specs. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions will be closed in 4 days from now. Good Luck!

Thanks NOVED for the suggestion!

Pretty basic Tapu Fini offensive set. Walls Heatran pretty good. You got your Nature's Madness to screw with fat walls, Hydro Pump as your damage dealer, and Moonblast for your usual anti-Dragon coverage. Last slot depends on what you need more.

Run Waterium Z most of the time, and only run Icium Z if you run Haze and want some recovery.

The one case where dd is my favorite choice on xzard, when it needs this particular coverage. Pre-mega, only cares about rock tomb on a switchin from a heatran invested in speed, as rock tomb doesn't ohko without investment:
0 Atk Heatran Rock Tomb vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Charizard: 104-124 (67.9 - 81%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
and the speed drop requires speed investment on tran to outpace it (116 speed evs with a netural nature required to outspeed 167 after a tomb)

an ancientpower also one-shots premega. statistics say that it's somehow 20% usage despite how many useful utilities it has for the non-stab+ep moveslot, but i don't believe it since i have literally seen it zero times. perhaps the opponents i face are pants-wetting sissies who can't click their meme coverage against something against which it blanks.

post-mega, takes literally 0 from its stabs, and only has earth power to fear. takes exactly one on the chin at least.
252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Charizard-Mega-X: 118-140 (77.1 - 91.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

generally the matchup would go like this.

if it tombs you on the switchin, immediately mega eq and pray it's a slow boy. this is unlikely to be the matchup since tomb has like 12% usage but it's still something to watch out for

if it doesn't, and grassy terrain isn't up, mega eq to rock its world.
252 Atk Charizard-Mega-X Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 220-260 (132.5 - 156.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

if it doesn't, but grassy is up, guess if they have ancientpower or tomb, and mega or non-mega dd accordingly, then do this to em
+1 252 Atk Charizard-Mega-X Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran in Grassy Terrain: 160-192 (96.3 - 115.6%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
if they did something like bloom doom or earth power that blanked on you, just immediately mega dd since earth power can't oneshot you barring crits or specs/life orb/soft sand.

the game for countering this is full of chess games and nuances, but to check it, "just earthquake lol". it's really that easy with this bad boy.

every mon can easily be a victim to heatran with sufficiently ""unique"" coverage or sufficiently good burn hax with plume. xzard doesn't care if the roll for plume is 100%, it won't get burned.
