  • Chinchou: So, after some testing, Remoraid just wasn't cutting it. It simply wasn't doing it's job, and died way to quickly. Chinchou has taken its place, and I couldn't be happier with the results. Volt Switch helps gain momentum and gives me opportunities to bring Wynaut in. Thunderbolt is a nice STAB, and Hydro Miss for power. Ice Beam hits the occasional Dragon and Grass types
  • Houndour: Darumaka had nice power, but Houndour is the Whole Package. It still hits really hard, and has Priority to boot. STAB Sucker Punch is a killer, Crunch is a fantastic secondary attack, and Fire Blast smacks fools and helps Diesel break walls like a champ. Protect is there to protect me from Fake Out, and helps scout as well.
  • Wynaut: It's official, 3 of my 4 Dark Horses got replaced. Wynaut is an old favorite of mine, and she does Cottonee's job a hundred times better. Cottonee is super predictable, but then again, so is Wynaut. Only difference is Shadow Tag, which is HUGE. Lilo makes Cranidos's job of setting up so much easier. Standard set is Standard, no need to explain it.
  • Cranidos: I made some big edits to Cranidos's set (thanks DeathxShinigami!). It still retains it's role of a RP sweeper, but in a much better way. Rock Slide + Sheer Force hits as hard as Stone Edge, and Fire Punch gives me nice coverage against Steels. Sheer Force's biggest draw however, is the negation of Life Orb recoil, which is fantastic and allows me to bluff a Choice Scarf occasionally.
  • Misdreavus: Ok ok, yes I'm using Misdreavus on a Dark Horse team, but it's just an incredible Pokemon, and one of my favorites. Shay acts as a secondary win condition, as after one Nasty Plot she is nearly unstoppable. Shadow Ball because obvious STAB is obvious, Thunderbolt in case anyone tries to get cheeky and switch in Normal Types such as Porygon. Will-O-Wisp provides utility for the team as it cripples physical attackers, and also allows Missy to avoid Sucker Punches.
  • Timburr: Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what exactly to think of Timburr. On one hand, it has pretty reliable bulk, and can deal some decent damage with Drain Punch and Mach Punch. Knock Off is pretty dang good this gen, and Ice Punch hits Gligar's on the switch. Overall though, it really hasn't done too much besides being, "that Fighting type" on my team. With the 35% rule gone, I'm considering dropping Biff for Mienfoo, but that sort of defeats the purpose of this team, which is to show off Cranidos and my other Dark Horses.

So I didn't technically sign up at the beginning but I've played 25 battles using 5 dark horse Pokemon and ended up with a ranking of 21-4, which I think is the ratio for bronze... annoyingly I was 21-3 before my last match which I if I won would have put me in gold... never mind... I should get extra points for 5/6 of my team being DH imo. ;D If this doesn't count 'cos I didn't sign up, i don't really care... the post is relevant to the thread and offers some insight onto some DH pokemon

anyway I'm sure most of you are aware of my team it was 4 Belly Drum mons alongside Pancham and Wynaut:
Swirlix @ Berry Juice
Ability: Unburden
Level: 5
EVs: 212 Atk / 68 Def / 204 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Belly Drum
- Play Rough
- Return
- Thief

Magby @ Berry Juice
Ability: Flame Body
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Belly Drum
- Fire Punch
- Thunder Punch
- Mach Punch

Zigzagoon @ Berry Juice
Ability: Pickup
Level: 5
EVs: 132 HP / 196 Atk / 108 Def / 28 SDef / 36 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Belly Drum
- ExtremeSpeed
- Seed Bomb
- Thief

Poliwag @ Berry Juice
Ability: Water Absorb
Level: 5
EVs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Belly Drum
- Waterfall
- Return
- Substitute

Pancham @ Eviolite
Ability: Scrappy
Level: 5
EVs: 140 HP / 100 Atk / 100 Def / 132 SDef / 12 Spd
Careful Nature
- Parting Shot
- Circle Throw
- Sky Uppercut
- Stone Edge

Wynaut @ Berry Juice
Ability: Shadow Tag
Level: 5
EVs: 76 HP / 132 Def / 212 SDef / 12 Spd
Bold Nature
- Counter
- Mirror Coat
- Destiny Bond
- Encore

So anyway, the 5 DH mons are Zigzagoon, Magby, Poliwag, Pancham and Wynaut. The team is very easy to play with, you just have to wear down each others counters with your BellyMons, and provide set up opportunities or check/remove random things with Pancham and Wynaut. It's very easy to wear things down: If you see a sturdy mon, you can wear it down by using zig or swirlix early game and removing their berry juice with thief... if thunder wave pory threatens you, you can set up on it using Substitute Poliwag and then take it out for the others etc... Wynaut provides countless set up opportunities with Encore, meaning I can often get my Belly Drum mons sweeping at full health. It also has the important job of removing Chinchou and Meditite from the game, which threaten some of my sweepers. Pancham prevents other mons from setting up on me with Circle Throw and also provides set up opportunities with Parting Shot.

Zigzagoon: Besides Swirlix, this guy has been my favourite BD sweeper to use. Because of it spamming Espeed most of the time anyway, I found little use for speed so I invested in enough bulk to survive a 110BP Acrobatics from Gligar which allows me to set up on it at full health. It can also survive Pawniard's Brick Break and takes less than 50% from Misdreavus's Dazzling Gleam, so it can always beat Berry Juice versions 1v1 with Thief. Thief also helped me to get past Tirtouga and Dwebble. I don't think I ever used Seed Bomb at all so I guess something else could go there, though I can't really think what rn. But yeah once EvioMissy/Honedge, really bulky mons are out the way, this guy is such an underrated sweeper. 8/10.

Magby: 19 Speed is what makes magby incredible, getting round most things with Fire Punch and Thunder Punch. Mach Punch rounds it off so I can get past faster things. Although I never found Magby as useful as Zig, it still pulled off its fair share of late-game sweeps, but I mainly used this guy midgame, to soften up Bulky shit like Porygon and Slowpoke (getting slowpoke out the way is very useful for the team). 7/10.

Poliwag: again, another BDer with 19 speed, but unlike the former two, it has no form of priority. It was probably my least useful Belly Drummer, but literally no team in the world thinks about preparing for Poliwag, so it can often catch teams off-guard. Waterfall/Return provide it with enough coverage to sweep teams that lack Frill/Lileep/Ferroseed. It can often sweep after Swirlix has weakened Ferroseed enough though, again proving that BD Hyper Offense is fucking legit. Sub was just a filler move, so it could set up on Twave Poke+Gon. Porygon in particular, was lured by this guy since it traced it's Water Absorb, then always went for TWave. 6/10, maybe more cos no-one prepares for it.

Pancham: Hyped near the beginning of XY for parting shot, it soon became accepted that Pancham was outclassed by the many other fighting-types roaming the tier. However, it has a very specific niche which is very useful on a certain type of team, i.e. this one. I only really ever used 2 moves on it, Parting Shot and Circle throw. The former allowed my sweepers to set up really easily, often meaning they could be at +6 and full health which is very fucking scary. Circle Throw was very useful, for annoying shit like Dwebble and Tirtouga who this guy could check pretty well. It also provided me with a decent Pawniard check, though using Parting Shot on it it kinda risky (it always paid off, luckily). I don't really know what Stone Edge hits... this guys movepool is really lacking. 5/10... you have to be using it on a team which really allows it to bring the most out of its niche, like this one. otherwise, find something else.

Wynaut: The MVP, no kidding. It's so predictable, yet so fucking useful. Counter = bye, bye Meditite, Swirlix can now sweep. Mirror Coat = bye, bye Chinchou, Poliwag and Magby can now sweep. Or it can KO whatever the opponent brings in on the volt switch. With Berry Juice it can often even take down 2 mons, if the first brings it down to BJ range and you KO it, you can now be at full health to kill something else. This is actually really cool when the opponent has Pawniard. If it is itemless, it can survive a 65BP Knock Off and then KO it. Destiny Bond + Encore is also amazing. Destiny Bond something, then just encore as it tries to set up or something. Switch out, and your BellyMon is now at +6, full health. This guy offers so much team support it's unreal. 9/10.

So yeah, that's my team. It's not perfect, it has weaknesses, and I probably wouldn't take it to a serious tournament match, but it has beaten some people near the top of the ladder like Toa Tahu and Ashley11. Replays can be find in the replay thread, or just search 'RowanBelly' on the replays.

Also, I am thinking about changing the goals for hall of fame to have to do with maybe GXE or something, to make the hall of fame standards more accurate, or maybe even something to do with ARMS, what do all of you think? For example, maybe a minimum of 25 matches with a GXE of 80 or higher for gold, 25 or more with a GXE of 74 or more for silver, and 25 or more with a GXE of 68 or more for bronze

EDIT: Never mind I am changing it anyways n_n It will now be gold is at least 25 battles with a GXE of 82 or higher. Silver is at least 25 battles with a GXE of 76 or higher. Bronze is at least 25 battles with a GXE of 70 or higher.

Were any of your Dark Horses very useful for your teams? Did they do their job correctly and then some?

Meowth's Life Orb Fake Out reaches 117 Power which hits quite hard, even off his modest 14 Attack. He was able to break sturdies and sashes and U-Turn out before his frailty caught up with him. He performed above expectations in my opinion, functioning as an effective revenge killer.

I chose Koffing mostly as a way to shut down Belly Drum Swirlix. However, he turned out to be effective at neutering physical threats like Mienfoo and Murkrow by tossing out burns like Michael Kelso and laying Toxic Spikes out for the others. He wasn't as impressive as Meowth, but performed his job satisfactorily.

Did you have any challenges in your way for creating a team out of not so common Pokemon? Any key roles for a team that weren't covered by underrated threats?

I feel like my team was whole and worked together quite well. I didn't really have trouble with the underrated threats, however, Spritzee was a problem to my Horses, able to protect against Meowth's Fake Out and able to remove the status problems Koffing worked so hard to spread. Meowth’s frailness was also problematic, usually falling to moderate neutral hits. Koffing also lacked the recovery I wanted it to have without compromising its defences by choosing Berry Juice. This often led it to untimely defeat, particularly at the hands of Special Attackers.
Rate your dark horses from 1-10. How useful were they? Would you use this Pokemon again? Why?

Koffing: 7/10 pre-Swirlix ban, 5/10 post-Swirlix ban
I put Koffing on my team mostly to shut down Swirlix and harass Gligar. Koffing could switch in on Swirlix Belly Drumming and take any +6 Physical Attack before hitting it with Clear Smog. It also made life a living hell for other physical attackers, shrugging off their attacks and burning them. Unfortunately for Koffing, Swirlix and Gligar were banned, meaning Koffing lost his purpose. Toxic Spikes are too easy to dispose of, and his defences will eventually crack. I'd use a Pokémon with reliable recovery, but still defensively solid with an array of support moves, like Shellos

Meowth: 7/10
Meowth was a lot of fun to use. He's a cool cat, his Fake Out can set weaker opponents up for a comfortable 2HKO, and he gives my team a Team Rocket vibe. I actually liked him so much that I decided to use him on my next team, simply because I think Fake Out is that good. Despite his shallow move pool, he was able to make the best of it, I feel.

Personal Note: I actually really enjoyed being a part of this. I'm still kinda new to Little Cup, so this was a great way for me to use Pokémon I was unfamiliar with. I hope my write-up is okay :)

Were any of your Dark Horses very useful for your teams, did they do there job correctly and then some? Wynaut and Karrablast both did exactly what they were supposed to, and then some. Wynaut was chosen on the team to reliably take out checks to swirlix as in meditite, and it did more than that. It could come in and take out gligars, fighting types, magnemites, etc. and then it could encore shell smashers and swords dancers to get free setup for swirlix. I am very pleased with Wynaut's job. Karrablast had the goal to be u-turned into the battle safely and then smash through things with banded megahorn. It did its job great. I came into this skeptical with karrablast, I didn't think a bug type could do so good against a metagame full of flying types. I got surprised. Karrablast ohko'd so many things, it was great. It could one hit ko murkrows, slowpokes, and other things while it 2 hit ko'd porygon, munchlax, and foongus. It really does a great job wallbreaking, and I even may use another team with karrablast using hazards+u-turn to get it in safely and then wreck things even harder with megahorn + Spikes and Stealth Rock. Pawniard gets one hit ko'd by a Karrablast Megahorn after 2 spikes.

Did you have any challenges in your way for creating a team out of not so common pokemon? Any key roles for a team that weren't covered by underrated threats?
I didn't have any trouble actually. All the roles i needed with my dark horses were covered, and creating the team wasn't hard at all. I just had to fill in the holes with the proper support, and I went on just fine going 21-4 to get silver rank. I thought it would be much harder, but it really wasn't.

Rate your dark horses from 1-10. How useful were they? Would you use this pokemon again? Why?
Wynaut gets a 9 out of 10. Wynaut did everything it was supposed to, and did it well. It would get a 10, but the weakness to knock off is quite a pain. Besides for that though, Wynaut is a great team member, and I would definitely use it again since it successfully does its niche correctly, and it is the only pokemon with this niche.

Karrablast gets an 8 out of 10. Karrablast did great as a wall breaker, and helped me soften the defense for swirlix a bunch. The only thing I didn't like is how there are common pokemon that resist bug right now like gligar and spritzee. Besides for that though, Karrablast did really good beating up regen cores and porygons. I would use it again if I get the chance. It has a great offensive wallbreaking potential that could definitely be put to use.

Were any of your Dark Horses very useful for your teams, did they do there job correctly and then some?

Growlithe, Lickitung, and Shellos all performed extremely well. Shellos was annoying af for the opponent, spreading burns and tanking knock offs. Growlithe was no doubt the MVP of team. Intimidate is so useful and WoWing during free turns is really nice too. Lickitung was the glue of the team, passing huge wishes and acting as a backup check to a shitload of stuff (special attackers, Gligar, weaker/burnt physical attackers, etc.).
Did you have any challenges in your way for creating a team out of not so common pokemon? Any key roles for a team that weren't covered by underrated threats?

The main challenges for this team are underused/crappy threats, like Bulk Up Timburr and DD/Choice Scarf Scraggy. Also, because I couldn't fit a defogger onto my team, opposing spike-stacking stall or offensive teams can be problematic. Power fighting types (like LO HJK tits) also muscle through Growlithe occasionally, which leaves them to clean through my whole team. Swirlix can also be annoying, although Clear Smog Shellos beats CG/CM sets, Pawniard beats CM sets, and Croagunk can usually beat BD sets. #BanSwirlix2014

Rate your dark horses from 1-10. How useful were they? Would you use this pokemon again? Why?

Growlithe: 9/10
Intimidate is so useful and really comes in clutch all the time. Instant recovery+WoW+high base power moves makes Growlithe threatening offensively and defensively. Growlithe also beats MixKrow (most of the time), Meditite (most of the time), and is just really nice to have in general. Would be a 10/10 if not for his SR weakness. Growlithe will now be my go-to fire type if I need one for a team.

Shellos: 9/10
Shellos is the best Gligar check ever. Seriously. It never loses unless gligar is at +4 and OHKOes right back. Sticky Hold is amazing in this Knock Off infested meta and Recover makes it really hard to take down when it can never be knocked off. It's ability to wall large portions of the meta+Clear Smog+instant recovery+good bulk+good typing+Knock Off immunity makes it a great pokemon. I will definitely use it again.

Lickitung: 8/10
Lickitung is really similar to spritzee, except its Specially defensive instead of physically. It does everything spritzee can do, like passing huge wishes and wall stuff, but also has more versatility than spritzee. Knock Off, Ice Beam, Flamethrower, Dragon Tail, Wish, Heal Bell etc. make it very customizable for a support mon. The only letdown for me is its horrible normal typing on a team that could get run through by Fighting types (srsly tits switches in for free on him every time). If Lickitung got fairy typing, it would be a better spritzee imo. As for now, he's outclassed, but he still is really bulky and useful.

Vs. SSin's standard team: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/lc-84226228

Now that I made hall of fame with wynaut and karrablast, they are going onto the main post as notable dark horses. They have both made the hall of fame twice now and have been used to full success in doing what they are supposed to. n_n

Also, remember to post about your expreriences with the dark horses, etc.

EDIT: ZoroarkForever has now made the Hall of Fame too! Thanks to this, Lickitung and Shellos is added to the notable Dark Horses list, as they have both made it on the hall of fame more than once now. GJ ZoroarkForever

mmk dcae, I will update that on the January hall of fame and give you leaderboard points n_n. (But I can't until you post your team at least XD)
