To be perfectly accurate, Satoshi Tajiri was the creator of the anime and is still very much alive.

Takeshi Shudo was still a major writer of many episodes and movies since its inception, though.

Satoshi created Pokemon in general though, Takeshi wrote the first three or four seasons of the Anime and the first three films.

Just to clarify, he had nothing to do with the games; his contribution was to the anime.

Apparently he DID create Lugia (other places which reported his death said this), so he did contribute something to the games.
