Project Monotype Victim of the Week [INDEX]

Electric Check:

Magnezone can effectively check Diancie as it is only 2hko'd by HP Fire with Sturdy as a back up. With a Choice Scarf, Magnezone can switch in once and ohko with Flash Cannon, but with Specs, Magnezone cannot switch in.

Magnezone @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Flash Cannon
- Hidden Power [Fire]

252 SpA Magnezone Flash Cannon vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Diancie-Mega: 484-576 (200.8 - 239%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Diancie-Mega Hidden Power Fire vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 168-198 (59.7 - 70.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Electric Check:

Tapu Koko can also check Diancie as it naturally outspeeds it, and it can ohko with a Specs Thunderbolt. Without Magnet, Tapu Koko can still 2hko Diancie, while Diancie doesn't ohko with Moonblast (however, Tapu Koko must be weary of the occasional Earth Power from Diancie).

Tapu Koko @ Choice Specs
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

IVs: 0 Atk

- Hidden Power [Ice]

252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Diancie-Mega in Electric Terrain: 246-289 (102 - 119.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Magnet Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Diancie-Mega in Electric Terrain: 198-234 (82.1 - 97%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Diancie-Mega Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Koko: 292-344 (103.9 - 122.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Ghost Check

Dhelmise supports the coverage and bulk to check Mega Diancie. It takes Moonblast and Diamond Storm neutrally, and OHKOs Mega Diancie with Anchor Shot. Not a lot of Pokémon on both Rock and Fairy take a Steelworker anchor shot very comfortably, so Dhelmise dents anything that switches in.

Cycle 6

Lopunny-Mega @ Lopunnite
Ability: Limber
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Encore
- Power-Up Punch
- Return
- High Jump Kick

Mega Lopunny is definitely the best mega on Normal teams currently, with its fantastic 135 Speed tier, outspeeding some of the metagame's fastest unboosted threats in Greninja and Tapu Koko, as well as having an unresisted STAB combination thanks to Scrappy. These traits make it a great tool against offense, and with Encore+PuP, it becomes even more difficult to handle defensively.

Ice Check

Mamoswine @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Icicle Crash
- Stone Edge
- Superpower

With a Choice Scarf, Mamoswine can outspeed and always KO Mega Lopunny with Superpower. However, it's unable to switch into a High Jump Kick:

252 Atk Mamoswine Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lopunny-Mega: 276-326 (101.8 - 120.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Lopunny-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mamoswine: 524-620 (145.1 - 171.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Rock Check

Terrakion @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Close Combat
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab

Same deal, it outspeeds and can always KO with Close Combat, but is unable to switch into High Jump Kick:

252 Atk Terrakion Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lopunny-Mega: 410-486 (151.2 - 179.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Lopunny-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Terrakion: 476-564 (147.3 - 174.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Rock Check

Aerodactyl-Mega @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Aerial Ace
- Earthquake
- Fire Fang

Mega Aerodactyl is able to outspeed and always KO Mega Lopunny with Aerial Ace, but can't safely switch into High Jump Kick:

252 Atk Tough Claws Aerodactyl-Mega Aerial Ace vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lopunny-Mega: 276-326 (101.8 - 120.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Lopunny-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Aerodactyl-Mega: 252-297 (83.7 - 98.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Dragon Check (Almost Counter)

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
Happiness: 0
EVs: 248 HP / 108 Def / 152 Spe
Impish Nature
- Frustration / Facade
- Roost
- Dragon Dance
- Cotton Guard / Heal Bell / Earthquake

Bulkier Mega Altaria sets can easily switch into Mega Lopunny if no Stealth Rock is on the field, while ones with more Defense EVs don't mind it at all. Then, if Mega Lopunny stays to risk a KO, it itself risks getting KOed back by Pixilate-boosted Frustration.

252 Atk Lopunny-Mega Return vs. 248 HP / 108+ Def Altaria-Mega: 132-156 (37.3 - 44.1%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0 Atk Pixilate Altaria-Mega Frustration vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lopunny-Mega: 302-356 (111.4 - 131.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Psychic Check

Victini @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- V-create
- Bolt Strike
- U-turn
- Blue Flare

Victini is the premier revenge killer in mono-psychic teams, and with V-Create, it has a high chance to OHKO Mega-Lopunny with V-Create (it's a guaranteed OHKO with Stealth Rock in the field

252 Atk Victini V-create vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lopunny-Mega: 258-304 (95.2 - 112.1%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Victini V-create vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lopunny-Mega: 258-304 (95.2 - 112.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Psychic Check

Alakazam @ Focus Sash
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Def
Hasty Nature
- Counter
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball

Alakazam's ability to act as a blanket check to a good amount of physical attackers with Focus Sash will help a lot against Lopunny-Mega, being able to OHKO it with Psychic (It doesn't even need Counter to stop Lopunny-Mega)

252 SpA Alakazam Psychic vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Lopunny-Mega: 312-368 (115.1 - 135.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

EDIT: I thought in another

Steel check (hard check, almost counter)

Skarmory @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 224 HP / 252 Def / 32 Spe
Impish Nature
- Brave Bird
- Roost
- Whirlwind
- Spikes

Skarmory high defense can help mono-steel to stop Mega Loponny, Brave Birds is a OHKO against it if we consider Rocky Helmet chip damage, and an almost guaranteed OHKO with a layer of Spikes (hey, Skarmory can put them too!) in the field

0 Atk Skarmory Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lopunny-Mega: 228-270 (84.1 - 99.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after 1 layer of Spikes

I put it as check because without Leftovers and with Stealth Rock in mono-steel's field, Mega Lopunny has a low chance to 2HKO, and after Brave Bird recoil, it's basically a KO for Skarmory itself, so it's not a counter imo, but if you consider it is indeed a counter, you can change this, I guess

Grass Check

Tapu Bulu @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Wood Hammer
- Stone Edge
- Superpower
- Horn Leech

Tapu bulu checks Mega Lopunny with a scarf set on mono grass teams since Grassy terrain wood hammer scores a direct OHKO on Mega Lopunny:
252 Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Lopunny-Mega in Grassy Terrain: 309-364 (114 - 134.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Bug Check

Buzzwole @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Superpower
- Stone Edge
- Ice Punch
- Earthquake

Buzzwole is a decent check to Mega lopunny since it outspeeds it with a scarf set and proceeds to OHKO with superpower:
252 Atk Buzzwole Superpower vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Lopunny-Mega: 432-510 (159.4 - 188.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Buzzwole also has good bulk which allows it to switch in on lopunny mega if needed:
252 Atk Lopunny-Mega Return vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Buzzwole: 130-154 (36.6 - 43.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Altaria-Mega @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
Happiness: 0
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Frustration
- Dragon Dance

Mega Altaria is the best Mega for Dragon teams currently, with its amazing natural bulk and Dragon immunity. These traits make it difficult to handle offensively, and its reliable sustain makes it a threat against more balanced teams.

Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Power Gem
- Sludge Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Pretty self-explanatory, Choice Scarf Nihilego outspeeds even after +1 and can KO with a Sludge Wave. However, it can't take an Earthquake:

252 SpA Nihilego Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Altaria-Mega: 294-348 (101 - 119.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Altaria-Mega Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Nihilego: 704-832 (196.1 - 231.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Impish Nature
- Rock Slide

From full health, Rhyperior is never 2HKOed by any attack from Mega Altaria, even after +1, and can almost always 2HKO with Ice Punch:

8 Atk Rhyperior Ice Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Altaria-Mega: 136-160 (46.7 - 54.9%) -- 62.1% chance to 2HKO

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

252 Atk Pixilate Altaria-Mega Frustration vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Alakazam: 492-579 (196 - 230.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Needless to say, but Counter will double the damage and OHKO back Altaria-Mega

That's the magic about blanket checks, they're so... Blanket

Bug Check

Scizor @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- U-turn
- Superpower
- Pursuit

M-Altaria simply can't sweep the opposing team as long as Scizor is alive: it easily lives M-Altaria's unboosted moves and, in emergency cases, Scizor also lives M-Altaria's Earthquake at +2 (very unlikely scenario). Offensively speaking, CB Scizor simply OHKOes M-Altaria with Bullet Punch before it can even move. M-Scizor also works as a M-Altaria check, but it needs to setup a SD first (or SR + luck!) to OHKO it.
252 Atk Pixilate Altaria-Mega Return vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Scizor: 88-104 (31.3 - 37%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Altaria-Mega Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Scizor: 97-115 (34.5 - 40.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 Atk Altaria-Mega Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Scizor: 193-228 (68.6 - 81.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Ability: Sturdy
EV:s 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 IVs
- Stealth Rock

Forretress' typing and enormous physical bulk helps it stomach a wide array of physical moves, including M-Altaria's boosted moves. In fact, M-Altaria must set up no less than four DDs before possibly netting a 2HKO against Forretress. In return, Forretress can set up SR and 2HKO unboosted M-Altaria or OHKO it with Gyro Ball after a single DD.
252 Atk Pixilate Altaria-Mega Return vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Forretress: 51-60 (14.4 - 16.9%) -- possible 8HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Since altaria's attacks are physical, skarmory's secondary typing steel and the amazing def stat helps skarmory to wall its pixilate boosted frustration easily. It is also slower than m altaria so it can roost quite easily to avoid eq damage.
It can wall up to +4 easily and it needs +5 to go down in 2 HKO guaranteed. It can also whirlwind a boosted altaria away aswell.

Standart boltbeam duck for mono normal is a decent counter to M Altaria because of its amazing bulk boosted by eviolite and icebeam. Fire Check

Rotom-Heat @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spa
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Volt Switch
- Overheat
- Pain Split

Rotom heat can significantly do well versus altaria with its immunity to earthquake and being able to resist fairy attacks with fire typing. Althought it can cripple altaria with willowisp ,tank its hits and stall hp back with pain split, it cannot get any significant amount of damage to kill altaria in 1 v 1 situation.

Calcs
252 Atk Pixilate Altaria-Mega Return vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Rotom-Heat: 61-72 (20.1 - 23.7%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 Atk Pixilate Altaria-Mega Return vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Rotom-Heat: 91-108 (30 - 35.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Pixilate Altaria-Mega Return vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Rotom-Heat: 122-144 (40.2 - 47.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+3 252 Atk Pixilate Altaria-Mega Return vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Rotom-Heat: 152-179 (50.1 - 59%) -- 78.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Cycle 8

Latias-Mega @ Latiasite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Roost
- Stored Power
- Thunderbolt

Mega Latias is a great wincon for Psychic with its fantastic natural bulk and its amazing Speed tier. These traits make it difficult to handle offensively, and balanced teams may oftentimes struggle to wear it down defensively.

Gonna submit one counter of my own:

Rock Counter

Tyranitar @ Choice Band
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 12 HP / 252 Atk / 244 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Pursuit
- Fire Punch

Tyranitar can actively switch into and very easily stomach Thunderbolts from Mega Latias, even after a Calm Mind, and it always OHKOes with Choice Banded Crunch:

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Crunch vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Latias-Mega: 374-444 (103 - 122.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 0 SpA Latias-Mega Thunderbolt vs. 12 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 87-103 (25.2 - 29.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Banned deucer.
Gonna reserve Muk-Alolan for Poison
Muk-Alolan as a counter for Poison

Muk-Alola @ Assault Vest
Ability: Poison Touch
EVs: 248 HP / 12 Def / 248 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Pursuit
- Poison Jab
- Rock Slide
Muk-Alolan is part of one of the most annoying defensive cores in the game - Venusaur-Mega and Muk-Alolan. Due to its Dark typing, it's vital in the matchup against Psychic. It 1v1s Latias-Mega and entirely hard-walls it:

+3 0 SpA Latias-Mega Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 248+ SpD Assault Vest Muk-Alola: 104-123 (25.1 - 29.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
That's at +3. At +6, it's only a 3HKO. Knock is a 3HKO:
0 Atk Muk-Alola Knock Off vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Latias-Mega: 126-150 (34.7 - 41.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Poison Touch ruins Latias-Mega's ability to set up on and also makes it difficult to keep it alive vs anything else. It can either:
-Stay in and use recover, which is outstalled by knock off and considering the poison chance, it'll likely end up dying anyways
-Try to get out and get hit by pursuit, or have the switch-in lose their item and potentially get poisoned

Thus, Latias-Mega is in a losing position no matter what. It doesn't have a way of beating Muk-Alolan, which can switch in on just about every move Latias has and still win, and thus I label muk as a counter.

The set is standard. Rock Slide is to check Zard Y and Volcarona, though you can use Shadow Sneak and just completely ruin psychic teams.

Krookodile @ Leftovers / Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate / Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pursuit / Stone Edge
- Stealth Rock / Superpower
- Knock Off
- Earthquake

Due to its typing it completely shuts down its attacks and switches in freely all the time. It can also pursuit trap it to get some chip damage or get a free knock off.

Heracross @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Megahorn
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Stone Edge

Scarf Heracross can use Megahorn against Latias-Mega and OHKO with Stealth Rock in the field

252 Atk Heracross Megahorn vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Latias-Mega: 324-384 (89.2 - 105.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Poison check

Scolipede @ Bugnium Z
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Megahorn
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab
- Swords Dance

Bugnium Z Scolipede is quite uncommon, but it can be used as a strong nuking tool against mono-psychic, and hey, Latias-Mega is not the exception, as with no boost, Savage Spin-Out can OHKO Latias-Mega

252 Atk Scolipede Savage Spin-Out (190 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Latias-Mega: 440-518 (121.2 - 142.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Steel check

Bisharp @ Black Glasses
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head

With 1 Calm Mind boost, Latias-Mega can only 2HKO Bisharp, even with +2 of Special Attack, Latias-Mega has a hard chance to OHKO Bisharp with Thunderbolt. Bisharp can take advantage of that and use Swords Dance and then Sucker Punch to OHKO Latias-Mega

+1 0 SpA Latias-Mega Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 174-205 (64.2 - 75.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 0 SpA Latias-Mega Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 232-273 (85.6 - 100.7%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

+2 252+ Atk Black Glasses Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Latias-Mega: 498-588 (137.1 - 161.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Alternatively, Knock Off + Sucker Punch can finish Latias-Mega, but it needs to be careful with possible Roosts from Latias-Mega

252+ Atk Black Glasses Bisharp Knock Off vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Latias-Mega: 234-276 (64.4 - 76%)
252+ Atk Black Glasses Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Latias-Mega: 252-296 (69.4 - 81.5%)

(65.4 - 76%) + (69.4 - 81.5%) = (134.8 - 157.5%)

Cycle 9

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 40 SpD / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Protect
- Substitute
- Calm Mind

Suicune, or more specifically Vincune, has become standard on most balanced Water teams thanks to being able to Pressure stall quite effectively with Sub+Protect and Calm Mind. This of course makes it incredibly difficult to break through on the special side, while physical attackers will have to fear the potential Scald burn. And passive Pokemon will often simply get PP stalled, even if they can take multiple boosted hits.
