Overview

  • Moltres can provide a varied amount of roles in the UU tier, ranging from sweeper, wallbreaker, to even a physical wall
  • Flame Body is a good ability to punish U-turn spam from the likes of Scizor and Crobat, while Pressure can help in some matchups vs Stall on Defensive Moltres
  • Fire/Flying STAB threaten a large portion of the tier, leaving Moltres with limited switch-ins for both offensive and stall teams alike
  • While its typing does offer very useful resistances to Bug and Fighting, as well as an immunity to Ground, a 4x weakness to Stealth Rocks cripples its available number of switch-ins and effective bulk greatly
  • Moltres also has consistency issues due to both its main STABs in Fire Blast and Hurricane being inaccurate moves

Moves
========

  • Agility gives Moltres the speed it needs to outspeed the entire unboosted tier and initiate a sweep
  • Fire Blast hits a large portion of the tier's Steel-types for super effective damage, as well as being Moltres's more accurate STAB
  • Hurricane has strong neutral coverage with Fire Blast and hits Fighting-types super effectively. With Flyinium Z, Moltres gains a 100% accurate Supersonic Skystrike that gives it a one-time nuke against enemies with the special bulk to tank a Hurricane, or to surprise resists with the upgraded damage.
  • Hidden Power Grass rounds out Moltres's coverage allowing it to hit Rock-Types, as well as certain Water-types where Hurricane would be less effective. With Grassium Z equipped, you can run Solarbeam to break through a Water or Rock type with a 200 BP Bloom Doom.
Set Details
========

  • 252 EVs in Special Attack and Speed give Moltres the maximum offensive presence possible
  • Flyinium-Z allows Moltres to nuke any non-Flying resist for significant damage
  • A Timid nature is preferred to outspeed Pokemon such as Heracross, Suicune, and Rotom-W prior to setting up, but if the extra power is more important you can run Modest instead.
  • Flame Body can help support Moltres's team by punishing U-turn spam

Usage Tips
========

  • This set works optimally when used as a late game cleaner

  • Moltres can gain switch in opportunities by utilizing its resistances on common Pokemon such as Scizor and Cobalion, although be wary of Stone Edge in the latter's case

Moltres can attempt Choice Scarf and Specs sets, but each have their drawbacks. Base 90 speed is rather slow for a Scarfer, and leaves Moltres unable to revenge threats such as Dragon Dance Haxorus at +1 speed. Choice Specs does have good immediate power, but is more prediction reliant as your opponent can play around your inability to switch moves. Choice users often have to switch because they're locked into moves, which makes Moltres's Stealth Rock weaknesses even greater of an issue on these sets.

Checks and Counters
===================

Blissey: Moltres struggles heavily to break through UU's premier special wall, having to resort to Toxic or PP stalling with Pressure and Substitute.

Stealth Rocks: The ever present entry hazard causes Moltres to lose half its health upon switching in, severely limiting either its setup opportunities or walling potential.

Rock-Types: Common Rock Types in the tier such as Mega Aerodactyl and Nihilego can switch into Moltres's STAB moves and pressure it out with 4x effective STABs of their own. Mega Aerodactyl can chip you on the switch with Pursuit, while Nihilego can lay hazards or try and predict your switch in with its powerful coverage.

I'm not QC but, Grassium Z doesn't turn HP Grass into Bloom Doom, It does turn into Breakneck Blitz (120 BP), so if you want to use Grassium Z, then you should use with Solar Beam, or stick with Firium or Flyinium in the Agility set
