Media Metalheads Thread III

The old thread died a while ago so I figured I'd make a new one.

To get things started, I grew out of my metalcore/nu-metal phase about two years ago. Nowadays I mainly go for:
- melodeath; Children of Bodom were my first exposure to it and from there I found Carcass, At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Dark Age, and the criminally underrated Autumn Leaves. In Flames and Soilwork are overrated.
- thrash/groove; Lamb of God (my favorite band), Pantera, Meshuggah
- old-school death; Atheist, Morbid Angel
- a bit of prog; Opeth, Between the Buried & Me
- some black; Sacramentum, Dissection

I also tried some doom but I really don't like it very much. Cannibal Corpse blows. I lean towards (melo)death and groove stuff but I'm willing to try mostly anything. If you could keep all this in mind when reccing stuff that'd be great thanks!

Albums I plan on listening to as soon as I can:
Gorguts - Obscura
The Chasm - Deathcult For Eternity: The Triumph
Dawn - Nær Sólen Gar Niþer For Evogher

Let's discuss metal!!!

"this is

DISSECTION

with...

THORNS OF CRIMSON DEATH!
tune in next week"

lol i think i found my new thing to do on wednesdays

I'm glad this topic has been revived, my tastes have shifted from when I was younger and I now like a great many types of metal. And yes, I listen to a lot metalcore, hardcore, and many stuff people don't seem to like nowadays.

Today I just really want to share a Japanese trance/progressive metalcore band Crossfaith (screw all the tiny differences between genres). Seriously their lead Kenta Koie has some of the best Asian harsh vocals I've ever heard.

Besides that I like listen to a lot of melodeath, progressive, trance and power metal. I don't think I could ever get into black or doom metal, it just doesn't appeal to me I guess.

Speaking of underground metal bands, I would really suggest to anyone who is viewing this thread that they subscribe to this channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ReConstructDe4d.

This guy posts a lot of underground metal that is REALLY good. Of course that is a subjective view, but you should really check out some of the songs featured on his channels. He usually has a small details about genre/artist/record label in the vid description, so it's easy to figure out what kind of music it is.

Anyways, I'd love to talk about metal more in this thread, but this is all I can think of right now. Oh yeah, anyone else going to Warped this year?

what the flying fuck is TRANCE metal?
Oh lord don't even get me started on this. You'll either think it's the best thing ever or the worst thing ever. Having said that, I'll just leave this here for you ;)

Please do listen to the entire song and don't be turned off by the album cover.

EDIT: sorry, the link should be working now.

oh damn, I missed it. I would've tuned in to that, maybe next week. I've got a radio show as well, Tuesdays from 2pm-330pm, and I tend to play a lot of death metal, but really it changes up every week depending on how I'm feeling. I like the doom metal a lot, but a 90 minute slot means a lot of times I don't get to work it in. http://www.wuvt.vt.edu/listenlive for me.

I figure I'll drop some music here, I dig Worship's "Terranean Wake" and "Last Tape Before Doomsday". Even though they call Last Tape a demo, it's almost as long as their full-length, and just about as good.

Also Craft - Void. Some black metal that beckons the death of the planet, right up there with the best doom.

lavos you should get dissection's first two albums (the somberlain & storm of the light's bane). some of the best melodic black metal around. if you like them then get all three of sacramentum's albums as well.

.
admittedly, this isn't as bad as i thought it would be, but it's basically just metalcore with synths.

played some Dissection last night.

and Far Away From the Sun is Sacramentum's only really essential album imo.

far away from the sun is sacramentum's best, no question, but i really like the coming of chaos & thy black destiny as well; they lean more toward a gothenburg melodeath-style sort of sound. they're nowhere near the level of excellence displayed on far away from the sun but they're still solid and they're fun listens at the very least.

autumn leaves - as night conquers day for best melodeath album. i like the gothenburg dudes but this blows them out of the water.

Melodic Death Metal is awesome and In Flames are the best! (not a metalhead just an In Flames fan)

The song that sora13 posted is very good as well! (the first one)

You ever just randomly download something and have it really impress you?

Just stumbled upon this demo and I thought these guys were doing a lot of cool stuff. They play mostly hardcore infused sludge that also borrows liberally from death and black metal. A few weak riffs here and there, but it's a demo and thought these guys were worth mentioning.

Also, random Brazilian thrash from 1990

When it comes to metal, I lean towards bands like Metallica (primarily old Metallica) and Slayer. However, I also like bands like Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, Pantera, and In Flames.

I cannot get into Meshuggah at all. I've tried listening to their stuff, but every time I do I just don't like it. It might just be because I really don't like the sound of that low-pitched 8th string on 8-string guitars. A 7-string guitar tuned a whole step down is just about the lowest I can tolerate pitch-wise, but I might run into an exception some time. I also absolutely cannot stand Deathcore and, as such, think bands like Suicide Silence are complete garbage.

I like Metalcore, though. Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, Bullet for My Valentine, and All That Remains kick ass. I like some Nu metal (in particular I like quite a few of Korn's songs), but for the most part I don't like Nu metal. I especially don't like Slipknot.

Haha, I figured you might not go for it. This band(indeed the genre) is often very hit or miss. Having said that, I posted a very conservative song of theirs. This is much more on par with their actual style and is really much better than the last song I posted:

And before you ask, yes, these are the exact same vocalists.

I'm glad it's not just me who feels the same way about Meshuggah, I don't if if it's something with their guitars, but I get completely thrown off when I listen to their music.

Oh and speaking of metalcore, how can you forget to mention Parkway Drive? ;P

i dig that, would love to hear a full length from them.

sludge/hardcore + black metal is such an awesome combination.

Celeste being a prime example, but there's a handful of other bands doing it now too and i love the trend.

literally the only band in this post that i don't think is shit is Meshuggah, and they're one of my favorite bands.

that's is almost entirely the reason to listen to Meshuggah. ;]
