Monotype Meloetta (Psychic)

[OVERVIEW]

Psychic
========

Meloetta's main claim to fame is its Normal typing and access to Shadow Ball, which let it checks Ghost-types, notably Chandelure and Gengar. Its great Special Attack and movepool, which includes coverage moves like Focus Blast and Dazzling Gleam, when combined with Choice Specs make it a phenomenal wallbreaker. Furthermore, Meloetta has fantastic special bulk, which makes it a good check to special attackers like Tapu Koko and Gengar. It also has access to U-turn, which lets it make use of its bulk and ability to force switches to pivot out and keep up momentum. Unfortunately, Meloetta has an easily exploitable Defense stat; as a result, it is weak to many physical attackers like Landorus-T and Terrakion as well as priority users like Bisharp. While it does sit at a respectable Speed tier, capable of outspeeding Pokemon like Buzzwole and Gyarados, Meloetta is still outsped by a majority of physical threats like Victini and Krookodile. Despite this, running Choice Scarf on Meloetta frees up a slot for Choice Band Victini, one of the best wallbreakers in the Monotype metagame.

Moves
========

Psyshock hits specially defensive Pokemon like Mantine and Zapdos extremely hard. It can also 2HKO Chansey after Stealth Rock damage. Psychic is an alternative that can sometimes help Meloetta wallbreak more easily due to its chance to drop the target's Special Defense. Shadow Ball gives Meloetta important coverage in hitting Ghost-types like Alolan Marowak and Doublade as well as opposing Psychic-types like Jirachi super effectively. Focus Blast lets it hit the Steel- and Dark-types that resist or are immune to Psychic, like Heatran and Tyranitar. Dazzling Gleam completes Meloetta's coverage by allowing it to hit Dragon- and Dark-types like Garchomp, Mandibuzz, and Mega Sableye. Alternatively, Hyper Voice gives Meloetta a reliable way of hitting Alolan Muk as well as bypassing Substitute, notably from stallbreaker Zapdos. However, it contributes nothing in terms of coverage.

Set Details
========

Maximum investments are made in Special Attack and Speed to let Meloetta hit as hard and fast as possible. Timid is the preferred nature, as it lets Meloetta outspeed Suicune. However, Modest is also an option, as it lets Meloetta 2HKO Chansey after Stealth Rock damage. Choice Specs turns Meloetta into a terrifying wallbreaker. Serene Grace doubles the chance of Psychic, Shadow Ball, and Focus Blast dropping the opposing Pokemon's Special Defense, which allows Meloetta to wallbreak more easily.
Usage Tips
========

Try to bring in Meloetta early-game often to wallbreak. Use Meloetta as much as possible when Stealth Rock is up on the opposing side, as most of its KOs are reliant on it. Meloetta can be switched into weaker Pokemon like Toxapex and Cradily as well as most special attackers thanks to its good bulk. For the most part, however, bring Meloetta into play through pivoting moves from teammates like Victini and Jirachi. Try to keep Meloetta healthy, especially if the opposing team has a Ghost-type, like Chandelure. Avoid status, particularly paralysis, because it leaves Meloetta susceptible to physical attackers like Mamoswine and Buzzwole. Be careful of what coverage move you lock Meloetta into against teams with Pursuit trappers.

Team Options
========

Choice Scarf Victini is a great partner to deal with fast Bug- and Steel-types like Choice Scarf Heracross and Choice Scarf Excadrill. It can also easily clean teams after Meloetta wallbreaks. Jirachi and Celebi are great defensive pivots that can set Stealth Rock and paralyze faster threats with Thunder Wave. Celebi can check Ground-types, while Jirachi can check Fairy-types and bring Meloetta in safely through U-turn. Slowbro can check most fast physical attackers, like Excadrill. It can also paralyze these threats with Thunder Wave, which helps Meloetta wallbreak freely without having to switch out. Calm Mind Mega Slowbro appreciates having Meloetta take out walls for it, as it can then clean up more easily. Rock Polish Mew and Mega Alakazam are fast cleaners that appreciate Meloetta's wallbreaking. Focus Sash Alakazam can also deal with Alolan Muk with Counter. Mega Gallade and Calm Mind Mega Latias are setup sweepers that also enjoy Meloetta's wallbreaking ability. Mega Gallade, in return, can take out checks to Meloetta like Alolan Muk, Chansey, and Celesteela. Latios is a good option for another Pokemon to wallbreak alongside Meloetta. It can also clear hazards with Defog, preventing Meloetta from being needlessly whittled down. Deoxys-S can set layers of entry hazards like Spikes and Stealth Rock, which makes switching into Meloetta much harder.

Moves
========

Psychic is Meloetta's strongest and most spammable STAB move due to its 20% chance to drop the target's Special Defense. Shadow Ball gives Meloetta coverage against Ghost- and Psychic-types like Mimikyu and Latios. Focus Blast completes Meloetta's coverage by letting it hit Dark- and Steel-types like Tyranitar and Heatran. U-turn gives Meloetta a way to gain momentum through the switches it forces. Trick is an alternate option that lets Meloetta cripple common defensive checks like Chansey and Mantine.

Set Details
========

Maximum investments are made in Special Attack and Speed to make Meloetta as strong and fast as possible. Choice Scarf lets Meloetta outspeed and revenge kill many threats to Psychic teams like Choice Scarf Excadrill and Mimikyu. Serene Grace gives Meloetta a chance to break through bulkier Pokemon that it would normally have a problem with, like Zapdos, by doubling Psychic, Focus Blast, and Shadow Ball's chance to drop the target's Special Defense stat.

Usage Tips
========

Using this Meloetta set is pretty straightforward. Meloetta should be used mainly as a revenge killer for threats like Choice Scarf Excadrill and Mimikyu. Keep it away from paralysis, which halves Meloetta's Speed and renders it almost useless. Avoid letting Meloetta take too much damage, especially if it needs to check a fast Ghost-type like Gengar, to let it clean up late-game more easily. Be careful of what move you lock Meloetta into, as it can often turn into setup bait due to its lower power. Meloetta can try to bluff other items like Choice Specs to force switches and gain momentum with U-turn. If Meloetta is running Trick, try to use it to catch walls on the switch to prevent them from easily switching into Meloetta later on; however, replacing Choice Scarf with another item isn't worth it if there are still some faster threats like Choice Scarf Heracross on the opposing team.

Team Options
========

Victini is a mandatory partner to Meloetta. Since Meloetta takes up the role of a revenge killer, Victini is free to run Choice Band, which lets it take out many of Meloetta's checks, like Chansey and Mantine, as well as annoying Bug- and Steel-types. Choice Band Victini also lets Meloetta run U-turn freely, as it can break all of Trick's targets. In return, Meloetta can beat faster Pokemon, like Gengar and Terrakion, that threaten Victini. Entry hazard setters like Deoxys-S, Jirachi, and Celebi help wear down the opposing team, letting Meloetta clean up more easily. Deoxys-S in particular can also set up Light Screen and Reflect, making it harder for Pokemon to revenge kill Meloetta. Jirachi and Celebi are also great defensive pivots. Jirachi can help deal with Fairy-types like Tapu Bulu, while Celebi can take out Water- and Ground-types like Azumarill and Gastrodon and sponge status ailments. Additionally, both of them can restore Meloetta's health with Healing Wish. Slowbro is another pivot that can check priority users like Dragonite and Diggersby. Calm Mind Mega Slowbro can wear down opposing walls, letting Meloetta clean up more easily.

Double Dance Mew works wonderfully well with Meloetta by being able to punch big holes in the opposing teams with a boosted Genesis Supernova and setting up Psychic Terrain in the process, helping Meloetta clean up much more easily and shielding it from priority. For a similar reason, Mega Gallade's wallbreaking abilities are appreciated by Meloetta. Stallbreaker Mew can help deal with walls like Chansey and Mantine that Meloetta struggles against. Latios can help Meloetta clean up more easily due to its excellent wallbreaking capabilities. It can also remove entry hazards with Defog, preventing Meloetta from being worn down too quickly. Focus Sash Alakazam is a great partner, as it can take out common checks to Meloetta, most notably Alolan Muk, with Counter. Mega Alakazam also helps wear down shared checks. Gothitelle helps remove walls like Mantine and Chansey that Meloetta usually struggles to deal with.

Moves
========

Psyshock is the STAB move of choice, as it can reliably hit Volcarona. Shadow Ball gives Meloetta useful coverage to hit Ghost- and Psychic-types like Doublade and Slowbro. Focus Blast provides Meloetta with a way to hit the Steel- and Dark-types that take almost nothing from its other moves, like Heatran and Tyranitar. U-turn allows Meloetta to pivot out efficiently and bring in stronger teammates like Victini.

Set Details
========

The investment in Speed along with a Timid nature allows Meloetta to outspeed threats like Buzzwole and Mamoswine. Maximum investment is made in Special Attack to let Meloetta hit as hard as possible. The rest of the EVs are put into HP and, with Assault Vest, allow Meloetta to pivot into many threats like Tapu Koko and Thundurus. Serene Grace helps Meloetta break through bulkier Pokemon by doubling Shadow Ball and Focus Blast's chance to drop the target's Special Defense stat.

Usage Tips
========

Use Meloetta as to pivot into strong special attackers like Tapu Koko and Latios. Keep it healthy to check threats like Volcarona and Chandelure. Try to keep Meloetta away from burns and poison, which heavily limit its ability to pivot into threats. Since this set can be easily walled by Pokemon like Mantine and Chansey, use U-turn on a predicted switch into these walls to bring in wallbreakers like Victini.

Team Options
========

Meloetta is a great pick on balance teams due to its ability to reliably check most Ghost-types as well as other major threats. Victini is a great partner, as it can break many of Meloetta's checks as well as take on Bug- and Steel-types like Heracross and Mega Scizor. Jirachi is a good defensive pivot that can set Stealth Rock. More importantly, Jirachi can keep Meloetta healthy by passing Wish and can paralyze faster threats with Thunder Wave. Slowbro can take on physical attackers that Meloetta has trouble with, while Meloetta can comfortably switch into special wallbreakers that Slowbro fears, like Latios. Stallbreaker Mew can break many walls that Meloetta generally has problems with, like Chansey and Mantine. Since Meloetta can easily be worn down through entry hazards like Spikes, Latios and Mega Latias are fantastic partners due to their ability to remove those with Defog. Mega Latias is also a good defensive complement to Meloetta. Mega Gardevoir is a great partner, as it can get rid of annoying Dark-types like Mega Sableye. Due to Meloetta's generally low power, Mega Gallade's wallbreaking abilities are very useful. Mega Alakazam beats many of the fast physical attackers that Meleotta can't handle, like Sand Rush Excadrill and Terrakion. Focus Sash Alakazam can additionally beat Alolan Muk, a huge threat to Meloetta, with Counter. Gothitelle can be brought in through Meloetta's U-turn to trap and remove opposing threats, most notably walls like Chansey and Mantine.

Substitute + Calm Mind is an option to make Meloetta a bigger threat to more defensive teams but forces it to forgo two important coverage moves. U-turn can be an option on the Choice Specs set to punish forced switches, but Dazzling Gleam and Hyper Voice are more useful.
Checks and Counters
===================

Psychic
--------
**Alolan Muk**: Alolan Muk easily switches into Meloetta and can Pursuit trap it, although it needs to watch out for Trick.

**Mega Scizor**: Defensive Mega Scizor can switch into Meloetta with ease and use it as setup fodder. However, it needs to watch out for Choice Specs Meloetta, as it can 2HKO Mega Scizor after a little prior damage.

**Chansey**: Chansey walls all Meloetta sets and can proceed to KO it with Seismic Toss or cripple it with Toxic or Thunder Wave. Chansey needs to watch out for Meloetta that run Trick, however.

**Physical Attackers**: Many strong physical attackers can KO Meloetta, like Victini and Mega Pinsir. It can also be easily revenge killed by priority users like Bisharp and Azumarill.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Specially defensive Pokemon like Mantine and Zapdos can comfortably switch into most Meloetta sets and beat it one-on-one. However, they need to be wary of Trick and Choice Specs Meloetta.

**Dark-types**: Defensive Dark-types like Mandibuzz and Mega Sableye wall Meloetta that lack Dazzling Gleam. Offensive Dark-types like Weavile and Greninja can outspeed and KO it; however, they need to be wary of Choice Scarf Meloetta.

Choice Scarf:
Team Options:
- Choice Band Victini is the sole reason Choice Scarf Meloetta is even viable. It needs to be pretty much stated that Choice Band Victini is a mandatory teammate. If it isn't being used, a different Meloetta set is always superior. Also, note that Trick is less useful when Choice Band breaks all of Trick's targets.
- Stallbreaker Mew should be mentioned.
- Mega Alakazam wears down shared checks.

Choice Specs:
Set:
- U-turn is not good on Choice Specs. Just break or damage whatever switches in.
- Trick is also not good because damage is the point of this set.
- Psyshock is usually better than Psychic this generation because of Mantine and Chansey. Hitting Zapdos is a side benefit.
- Hyper Voice is useful for the reasons you mentioned. It should be slashed behind Dazzling Gleam.
- Modest is superior because of the damage. Being able to 2HKO Chansey and OHKO Porygon2 with Stealth Rock up is huge. Maximizing damage done to Alolan Muk is also very important. Modest Focus Blast always OHKOes Tyranitar.
- Timid does let Meloetta outspeed Nidoking, Gyarados, and Kyurem-B, so it is still slashed.
- No matter what, Meloetta should just end up maxing out its Speed. Modest and 252 Speed beats Heatran. Timid and 252 Speed ties with Porygon-Z.

name: Wallbreaker (Psychic)
move 1: Psyshock
move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Focus Blast
move 4: Dazzling Gleam / Hyper Voice
item: Choice Specs
ability: Serene Grace
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Moves:
- See set changes. Change ordering and wording as needed.
- Dazzling Gleam hitting Dragon-types is actually very important. Probably more important than hitting Dark-types, which just retreat to Alolan Muk anyway.
- Remove U-turn, Trick. Psychic may be kept.

Set Details:
- Again, see set changes.

Usage Tips:
- Remove usage tips for removed moves.
- Talk about using Meloetta mainly when Stealth Rock is up, as almost all of its 2HKOes and OHKOes are reliant on it for reliability.
- Talk about being careful of choosing coverage moves against teams with Pursuit trappers.

Assault Vest:
Set:
- Psyshock is a must for hitting Volcarona.

name: Assault Vest (Psychic)
move 1: Psyshock
move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Focus Blast
move 4: U-turn
item: Assault Vest
ability: Serene Grace

Moves:
- Remove Psychic. Add Psyshock.
- Remove Dazzling Gleam. It can't even 2HKO Mega Sableye.

Usage Tips:
- Specifically mention Volcarona.

Other Options:
- You can add those things I removed.

Specs set needs some work, rest is pretty fine.

Usage Tips

- Bringing Meloetta in on most special attackers is usually safe thanks to its excellent natural bulk but avoid switching it in on physical attackers.

[SET 3]

Serene Grace helps Meloetta break through fatter Pokemon by doubling Psychic, Shadow Ball, and Focus Blast's chance to drop the target's Special Defense stat.
- This set doesn't have Psychic.

Assault Vest

Team Options:
- Add Mega Gardevoir. Since it's not running Dazzling Gleam, Mega Garde would be an excellent partner with its Fairy typing and STAB Hyper Voice in removing troublesome Dark-types like Mega Sableye for example.

Good job
QC 3/3

timid / modest on specs nowadays. Timid outspeeds vincune. 2hkoing the normal core is still good though so keep modest slashes.

Add mega gallade to Scarf and av. They lack damage so its wallbreakig power is very useful.

Also add latias as a defensive partner for av

Looks good otherwise

[OVERVIEW]

Psychic
========

Moves

Set Details
========

Serene Grace doubles the chance of Psychic, Shadow Ball, and Focus Blast dropping the opposing Pokemon's Special Defense, which allows it Meloetta to wallbreak more easily.

Usage Tips
========

========

Moves

Psychic is Meloetta's strongest and most spammable STAB move due to its 20% chance to drop the target's Special Defense. Shadow Ball gives Meloetta coverage against Ghost- and Psychic-types like Mimikyu and Latios. Focus Blast completes Meloetta's coverage by letting it hit Dark- and Steel-types like Tyranitar and Heatran. U-turn gives Meloetta a way to gain momentum through the switches it forces. Trick is an alternate option that lets Meloetta cripple common defensive checks like Chansey and Mantine.

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

========

Moves
========

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

========

Since Meloetta can easily be worn down through entry hazards like Spikes, Latios and Mega Latias are fantastic partners due to their ability to remove hazards those with Defog.

Other Options
=============

Psychic
--------
Substitute + Calm Mind is an option to make Meloetta a bigger threat to more defensive teams but forces it to forgo two important coverage moves. Thunderbolt is a possible coverage option on the Choice Specs set to hit Celesteela and Gyarados. U-turn can be an option on the Choice Specs set to punish forced switches, but Dazzling Gleam and Hyper Voice are more useful.
