Week 11: Physically Defensive Quagsire

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic / Curse
A staple for stall in the RU tier, Quagsire functions as the stall's check to setup sweepers. Not a whole lot to explain, Quagsire doesn't do anything too fancy other than sit in front of what it walls. Scald/Earthquake are STAB moves, Scald additionally allows Quagsire to burn physical attackers making its job easier. Toxic allows Quagsire to beat setup sweepers without having to worry about Recover PP, while Curse serves a similar purpose versus physical attackers while additionally allowing Quagsire to function as Stall's wincon.

Gigalith @ Grassium Z
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Rock Blast
- Toxic
- Solar Beam

Lure concept is self explanatory. Yes you could just toxic quag but then it can be heal belled, toxic you, stick around... eww. No. What you want is for quag to go down. Yes. Down. Yes. This is the solution. It also probably also does like, a lot, to stuff like milotic.

0- SpA Gigalith Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Quagsire: 456-540 (115.7 - 137%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Flygon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Dragon Dance
- Earth Power
- Giga Drain

Special Flygon is here. Bluff the standard physical set by using Dragon Dance, and let the poor unaware Quag taste death by using Giga Drain as it stays in to take the blow.

252+ SpA Life Orb Flygon Giga Drain vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Quagsire: 478-567 (121.3 - 143.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Minior @ Grassium Z
Ability: Shields Down
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shell Smash
- Acrobatics / Stone Edge
- Solar Beam
- Earthquake

0- SpA Minior Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Quagsire: 692-816 (175.6 - 207.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

you're still weak and all that, but at least u kill quagsire and i guess if other flying resists are weakened, you can sweep with this. acrobatics is only 55 power so you can use stone edge if you want but its less accurate and u know you've missed plenty of 80% moves that coulda won u the game. u're weaker to grass types but who uses those to check a flying type???

also to advocate for the set a bit more, z-beam also kills rhyperior, jelly and slowbro when +2, while also being an accurate ko on gator and cloyster. its not just for quag

Because I was asked:

Doublade @ Eviolite
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Atk / 96 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- Toxic
- Swords Dance
- Shadow Sneak

Toxic Doublade is a great lure for Quagsire not just because Quag hates eating a Toxic, but also because it makes Doublade so utterly annoying for stall builds. Umbreon's rhythm can easily be disrupted and it can't do everything it wants at once, and Shadow Claw is nice but not necessary. Basically it's not as immediate as other nominations but it's a set that pulls its weight while doing very little harm to the mon's ability to be, you know, good.

Week 12: Specially Defensive Gigalith

Gigalith @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Rock Blast
- Earthquake
- Toxic
Gigalith is one of the best blanket checks for special attackers in the tier, and certainly the most reliable counter to the incredibly threatening Salazzle and Swellow. As such, luring Gigalith could set you up for an incredibly easy sweep with a plethora of special attackers. With Sand Stream paired with its Rock typing and impressive stats (aside from speed), Gigalith is a very capable tank. Move choices are relatively simple; Rock Blast is used for the potential to beat sash mons like Aerodactly + the accuracy is favored over Stone Edge's strength, Earthquake rounds out coverage, Rocks are for utility, and Toxic allows Gigalith to prevent mons like Feraligatr from setting up in its face.

Moltres @ Grassium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Solar Beam
- Fire Blast
- Sunny Day
- Morning Sun

When I say Moltres has some untapped offensive potential, I mean it! One of those sets you really hoped you wont face during the XY days, makes a return cause it works for the situation at hand. Gigalith is by no means a "z-solar beam with everything" bait like Quagsire is so you need to look for a more practical approach, and this is one that makes good use of grassium-Z.

For those that dont know, it is hella unlikely you will kill gigalith with z-solar beam under sand cause it is 60 bp while sand is active, so the Z-Move will use that as a base. This is incorrect, but w/e, with the boost on spdef that gigalith has under sand basically the same deal. The deal with this set is, you sunny day on the obvious gigalith switch-in, solarbeam is at full power, then you scout for protect first, and then:

252 SpA Moltres Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gigalith: 336-396 (89.8 - 105.8%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO

Virtually removed after Stealth Rock. Lured, and it makes Moltres really fearsome for even water types to face as a bonus.

Zoroark @ Life Orb
Ability: Illusion
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Focus Blast
- Sludge Bomb
- Nasty Plot

The idea here is: Zoroark sets up disguised as Salazzle, Gigalith will more likely switch in cuz its awesome against Salazzle, then you just KO it with Focus Blast and open the path for Salazzle to sweep. You can also use Grass Knot if you don't want to risk missing ig, if used weel Zoroark can be crucial luring Gigalith, allowing Salazzle to win.

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Zoroark Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gigalith in Sand: 356-421 (95.1 - 112.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

Diancie @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Moonblast
- Diamond Storm
- Toxic

This Diancie set has a similar idea of EviGaro's Doublade: make use of Toxic to wear down its counter. Gigalith can easily take hits from Diancie and do a decent chunk with Earthquake, so baiting Gigalith and Toxic'ing him is a good way to cripple it.

Ninetales @ Grassium Z
Ability: Drought
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Solar Beam
- Fire Blast
- Psyshock
- Nasty Plot

Similar to Aldo's, Ninetales opts for a more grassy variant in order to overcome this mountain. Nasty Plot and Z-Solarbeam Gigalith, simple as that. Gigalith blocks out the sun, believing it owns this fire fox by making it unable to use its Grass coverage, but in this has bloomed its doom. Because of how it mimics Firium Z with the same exact movepool, one doesn't have to worry about Protect scouting unlike Sunny Day Tres.

+2 252 SpA Ninetales Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gigalith in Sand: 334-394 (89.3 - 105.3%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO <- almost exact dmg as Moltres, one needs rocks up in order to finish the job.

Swellow gen 5 sprite.gif

Swellow @ Choice Specs
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Boomburst
- U-turn
- Heat Wave
- Endeavor

Here's a creative approach to a lure. You let Gigalith set up its Stealth Rock, then click U-turn whenever Gigalith comes into Swellow. The Stealth Rock damage and Sandstorm damage will rack up each time you do it, then when you get low enough, you click Endeavor and Gigalith should be much easier to take out from there. It doesn't OHKO Gigalith like a Z-move lure could and you severely weaken your own Pokemon in the process, but it's still a cool move to run on Swellow nonetheless. Swellow doesn't lose out on much except for Air Slash, which you will rarely use anyway, and you get to weaken stuff like Rhyperior, Gigalith, etc. for teammates. Your opponent can't even switch into a Ghost to take the Endeavor if they scout for it thanks to Scrappy. I loved running Endeavor on Guts Swellow last gen and this is a throwback to that.

0 Atk Gigalith Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Swellow: 420-494 (160.9 - 189.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Endeavor doesn't work on the calculator and there wouldn't be much point in posting an Endeavor calc anyway :P
