Koffing** [QC 3/3]

Original analysis written by Nozzle. This analysis, among others, had to be completed and submitted in a hurry for Smogon's new dex. The OP here has been fully changed to reflect QC's version of this, written by Goddess Briyella. Corkscrew has already QC checked this within the LC QC project and his changes have already been implemented, and Goddess Briyella, Corkscrew, and DTC have all QC checked this on the forums, making it QC 3/3.

Overview
########
- Literally the mascot of Smogon
- Defensive Poison type with awesome resistances
- Reliably walls and threatens the offensive capabilities of most physical attackers
- One of the few Pokemon to resist Fairy + Ground coverage
- Only one weakness (Psychic)
- Very slow and is only decently strong offensively

Defensive
########
name: Defensive
move 1: Will-O-Wisp
move 2: Pain Split
move 3: Sludge Bomb / Clear Smog
move 4: Fire Blast / Destiny Bond
ability: Levitate
item: Eviolite
evs: 36 HP / 236 Def / 236 Sp Def
nature: Bold

Moves
========

- Will-O-Wisp is Koffing's key to bringing down physical attackers and is a very important move in its arsenal, if not the most important
- Pain Split is Koffing's only form of recovery but it is one that heals itself while also damaging the opponent
- Sludge Bomb is the obligatory STAB attack that deals decent chunks of damage and has a nice 30% Poison chance
- Clear Smog is an ideal option over Sludge Bomb if you want to tailor Koffing to be able to stop setup sweepers from getting out of control, though this effect will not activate on a Substitute
- Fire Blast is an option primarily for hitting the Steel-types that are immune to Koffing's STAB; it gets a big hit on Honedge and nails Ferroseed especially hard
- Destiny Bond lets Koffing take a foe down with it when it is made to faint by a direct attack, and can be used as a last-ditch attempt to get rid of a troublesome enemy

Set Details
========

- Eviolite with the given EV spread gives Koffing and effective Defense stat of 30, very impressive and tanks physical hits very well
- Apart from maxing out Defense, the remaining EVs contribute Koffing's special bulk so that it can put up with stray neutral special hits more easily
- Less is invested in HP to make Pain Split more effective.
- Levitate rids Koffing of its would-be Ground weakness and comes in very handy, except when facing an opponent with Mold Breaker and Earthquake

Usage Tips
========

- Koffing can switch in comfortably in most cases against Bug-, Fairy-, Ground- and Fighting-type foes, and can force most physical attackers out with the threat of Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split can be used at lower health against enemies with higher health to damage them while also recovering HP; Koffing's low Speed can come in handy for this move in particular, as it lets the opponent take away some of its health before stealing it back from them with Pain Split
- Clear Smog stops setup cold, though some exceptions are that it will not reset stats if it hits a Substitute or a Steel-type
- Destiny Bond can be used as Koffing's health reaches near-fainting-levels, to make the opponent think twice before delivering a fatal blow, this can be used to make them not attack Koffing and then Pain Split can be used to regain health if they don't finish you off, it's kind of evil lol
- Fire Blast roasts Steel-types and can be used on predicted switch-ins of that type to turn the tide of battle

Team Options
========

- Koffing highly appreciates Wish support, even though it has Pain Split; Lickitung makes a good partner for this purpose in particular, since Koffing can shrug off the Fighting-type attacks aimed at Lickitung, while Wish recovery can be provided to them both
- Scraggy makes an ideal partner that covers Koffing's sole weakness to Psychic, while Koffing tanks the Fighting-type attacks aimed at Scraggy's weakness to them
- Chinchou makes a good partner for dealing with Tentacool, as it walls Koffing's STAB as well as Fire Blast rather easily and can therefore cause issues
- Hazard setters like Dwebble and Ferroseed can be ideal partners, since the switches Koffing can cause can rack up residual damage via hazards quite nicely; Fighting-types switch out to avoid being burned, and Fairy-types switch out due to the overall type disadvantage, for example
- Pure Dark-types such as Zorua or Purrloin love having Koffing as a partner, as it resists all 3 weakness of Dark: Fighting, Bug, and Fairy; other Dark-types such as Vullaby and Pawniard appreciate this as well, but to a lesser degree since their second type neutralizes some of the weak points already

Other Options
########

- Rest+Sleep Talk is another option for recovery and makes Koffing a fantastic wall to most Chlorophyll sweepers as it resists Grass and Poison and won't mind Sleep Powder.
- Explosion is an option for going out with a bang, though this became notably less powerful after DPP; Memento can be used as a suicide option as well, to strip an enemy of their offensive presence almost entirely, and can be used to help a teammate come in and set up afterward
- Toxic Spikes is a new addition to Koffing's movepool and can be used to poison all grounded foes as they enter battle, though opposing Poison-types make them go away effortlessly just by coming in
- Haze is a move that's more reliable for ending setup sweeps than Clear Smog in most cases, but does not deal damage and is blocked by Taunt
- Thunderbolt is an option for hitting Water- and Flying-types hard, and can be useful for getting around Tentacool, but is generally not useful outside of that
- Belch is a surprise can be used with Oran Berry to provide Koffing the most powerful special STAB move available to it, but lack of Eviolite may make this undesirable
- Grudge is an option that allows Koffing to completely drain the PP of a move that knocks it out, and can be used to influence the opponent's move choices (i.e. Misdreavus won't like being without Shadow Ball after it kills Koffing with one)
-Shadow Ball can be used to hit Psychic type and Ghost-type switch-ins such as Elgyem and Gastly.
-Taunt can stop slower walls, such as Hippopotas and Foongus, from using status moves or recovering, but generally Koffing is a bit too slow to utilise this to its full potential.

Checks & Counters
########

**Psychic-types**: Abra especially, but also Slowpoke and a few others can make Koffing take major damage with their STAB attacks. Gothita is especially notable for being able to completely trap and remove Koffing.

**Mold Breaker EQ Users**: Drilbur especially, but also Cranidos, can override Koffing's immunity to Ground provided to it by Levitate, and nail its weakness

**Rock-types**: They wall Koffing's STAB as well as Fire Blast, and some of the more specially inclined ones such as Omanyte don't mind being burned and can set up on Koffing with little risk

**Tentacool**: Tentacool pretty much hard-walls the main set and can dish back decently significant damage with Scald and/or have a free Knock Off against either Koffing or on an incoming teammate as Koffing flees

**Flash Fire Carriers**: Ponyta and other Fire-types can come in on Will-O-Wisp or Fire Blast and get a boost to their Fire attacks, often putting Koffing in a defensively bad position, especially if its Eviolite has been removed via Knock Off.

**RestTalk Pokemon**: Chinchou and Munchlax don't care about burns is they're using Rest and Koffing's attacks do very little to them.

Your EVs are weird. Maxing HP is always the way to go on defensive pokemon, as it gives you better mixed bulk. The only reason the EVs were like that last generation is because of Pain Split, which you do not have. Run 196 HP / 236 Def / 76 SpD, Swirlix can't really touch you even when you are physically invested.

0 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Cranidos Ice Beam vs. 196 HP / 76 SpD Koffing: 9-12 (39.1 - 52.1%) -- 12.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Cranidos Ice Beam vs. 36 HP / 236 SpD Koffing: 8-10 (38 - 47.6%) -- 9.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

+1 204+ SpA Swirlix Flamethrower vs. 196 HP / 76 SpD Koffing: 13-16 (56.5 - 69.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

EDIT: wow it doesn't actually give you more mixed bulk i am a dumbass, still a better ev spread for a physical wall

Fixed :)

  • The usage tips are really barren... you basically just say something obvious and then say "i mean it". Talk about what kind of Pokemon you would switch Koffing into: Timburr, Mienfoo, Swirlix, and other Pokemon like that. You should also talk about when to use Toxic Spikes, since that's one of the reasons why you use Koffing in the first place.
  • Where you mention Defog, make a note that the best Pokemon with Defog are immune to Toxic Spikes (Gligar / Vullaby / Archen)
  • Where you mention Pain Split and Rest + Sleep Talk, say that Eviolite should be used if you choose to use those moves
  • Team Options could be beefed up a bit. Ferroseed + Koffing is a pretty decent core; Koffing beats Fighting-types for Ferroseed, while Ferroseed beats Psychic-types as well as a lot of Pokemon that threaten Koffing. Also, where you mention Timburr, acknowledge that Timburr compounds the Psychic-type weakness.
usage tips / c&c / team options in general could have some more added into them.

I think RestTalk deserves a set, particularly in this current meta. With Vulpix in the tier, ResTalk Koffing is one of the best chlorophyll counter as most run sleep/grass stab/poison stab which resttalk koffing takes nothing from. set would probs look like this:
rest
sleep talk
sludgebomb/clear smog
will-o-wisp/fire blast
not sure about the spread, but maybe something a bit more specially defensive for aforementioned sun sweepers to take their HP fires better.

in usage tips talk about how poison is a really cool defensive typing now, walling all fighters (bar tits) alongside the new fairies. levitate also makes it a fantastic ground type counter, so it beats gligar really well

team options, mention bulky normals (munch, pory, licki). they have good SpD and koffing takes on fighters. lickitung gets a special mention due to wish support. dark types take on psychics, whilst koffing takes on fairies for them... scraggy and krow are good examples.

OO: shadow ball hits psychic switch ins, but sucks most of the time. taunt for random slow bulky things.

  • As DTC touched on a bit, this analysis is really skin and bone, and will need some fluffing up. Perhaps mentioning how Koffing fares in the metagame in scenarios where each of its moves can be used efficiently would be a good place to start.
  • Emphasize how bad Clear Smog screws over the important threat Swirlix by not only hitting it for super effective damage, but also nullifying its boosts. Also, you might mention that Koffing wins against it as long as it doesn't have Psychic. Most Swirlix sets don't carry it but this would be a prime reason to.
  • Add RestTalk to Other Options, as well as Taunt and Explosion.
  • The Checks & Counters section is missing a lot. Tentacool deserves the top mention in Checks & Counters, as not only does it wall Sludge Bomb and Fire Blast comfortably with its resistance to them and its high special bulk, but it also can Rapid Spin Koffing's Toxic Spikes away and lay Toxic Spikes of its own. Koffing's Levitate becomes a disadvantage in this scenario because it keeps Koffing from getting rid of the opponent's Toxic Spikes. Skrelp should also get a strong mention here, as it can take anything Koffing can throw at it and almost nothing wants to take an Adaptability STAB Hydro Pump from Skrelp as Koffing is forced out.
  • Natu deserves a special mention in Checks & Counters, as Magic Bounce allows it to switch into Toxic Spikes and deflect them back, without Koffing being able to remove them itself despite being a Poison-type. This is further complemented by the fact that Natu has an offensive advantage against Koffing and can hit its weaker defensive stat with a STAB super effective Psychic.
  • Mold Breaker Earthquake destroys Koffing, and as such, users of it including Drilbur and Cranidos should be added to Checks & Counters. In addition to Cranidos having access to Mold Breaker and Earthquake, it also resists both Sludge Bomb and Fire Blast, making it a pretty hard counter.

Not QC, but I've been using Koffing a lot, and...

Is Sludge Bomb really necessary? I find that my set of Pain Split / Will-O-Wisp / Clear Smog / Fire Blast has enough offensive prowess, through a combination of those four moves. I suppose you could slash it in with Clear Smog, especially if it can OHKO Swirlix.

Also, Pain Split is better this generation, due to the rise of Berry Juice. If Koffing's at 20%, and the opponent's at 80%, they'd both go to about 40%. If the opponent has Berry Juice, however, it goes back up to 100%. Then, if it does 20%, putting you at 20%, you can heal back up to about 60%. However, I'd use Eviolite with Pain Split.

Also, perhaps mention that it struggles to switch into some physical attackers, like Mienfoo, who carry Knock Off.

And yes sludge bomb is necessary since the poison chance is pretty good and its not entirely weak

0 SpA Koffing Clear Smog vs. 212 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Spritzee: 8-12 (29.6 - 44.4%) -- 17.6% chance to 3HKO
0 SpA Koffing Sludge Bomb vs. 212 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Spritzee: 14-18 (51.8 - 66.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Koffing can't beat Wish/Protect Spritzee with just Clear Smog. It'll just keep healing up and poking with Moonblast. Sludge Bomb is a clean 2HKO.

0 SpA Koffing Clear Smog vs. 20 HP / 0 SpD Swirlix: 14-18 (60.8 - 78.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Koffing Sludge Bomb vs. 20 HP / 0 SpD Swirlix: 20-26 (86.9 - 113%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
0 SpA Koffing Sludge Wave vs. 20 HP / 0 SpD Swirlix: 20-26 (86.9 - 113%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
0 SpA Koffing Clear Smog vs. +1 20 HP / 0 SpD Swirlix: 8-12 (34.7 - 52.1%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO
0 SpA Koffing Sludge Bomb vs. +1 20 HP / 0 SpD Swirlix: 14-18 (60.8 - 78.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 204+ SpA Swirlix Flamethrower vs. 196 HP / 76 SpD Koffing: 13-16 (56.5 - 69.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
204+ SpA Swirlix Flamethrower vs. 196 HP / 76 SpD Koffing: 9-11 (39.1 - 47.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Turn 1: Koffing switches in, Swirlix Calm Mind.
Turn 2: Koffing Clear Smogs, Swirlix activates Berry Juice.
Turn 3: Koffing takes 39.1 - 47.8%, then KO's through Berry Juice with Clear Smog.

And Fire Blast kills Grass-types.

I think Sludge Bomb is unnecessary. Fire Blast is plenty powerful, and Toxic Spikes, Clear Smog, and Will-o-Wisp are much more important than being able to 1v1 Spritzee. You can just Clear Smog the boosts away and kill it with something else.

moves:
-mention CM spritzee as a set-up sweeper that clear smog stops.
-talk about how if you're running toxic spikes, it makes will-o-wisp less reliable, but it's still good for levitating threats, steel-types and the odd poison-type.

usage tips:
-talk about how it's one of the best switch-ins to all fairy types
-mention how it's very easy to switch into any physical attacker that lacks a SE move. Gligar should be mentioned especially since that's one of koffing biggest niches right now, walling fighters and gligar.

team options:
-anything that likes bulky walls like lileep and porygon weakened with TSpikes. SubRoost Krow really likes Toxic Spikes support, for example. Misdreavus will also appreciate the passive damage on them.
-Ferroseed can also add more hazards for a hazard based team... between ferro+koffing they'll be able to force a lot of switches thanks to the amount of pokemon they wall together.
-Talk about how lickitung is cool because with wish+protect it can toxic stall as well as keep koffing healthy.
-koffing can also handle fighters for dark-types, as well as fairies.
-Pawniard gets a +2 boost from defog which koffing lures out with TSpikes.
-stuff to take advantage or remove poison types which absorb Tspikes... diglett, gligar, psychic types can do this.

checks and counters:
-restalk chinchou and munchlax don't care about poison/will-o-wisp and take very little from koffing's attacks.

This Pokemon, as is the case with many others, was on a list of Pokemon that were high priority and needed to have completed skeletons for Smogon's new dex as soon as possible. As such, the OP of the thread has been fully edited to reflect the QC team's writeup of this Pokemon, as it will make things run a lot faster.

Thank you for understanding. :)
