Keldeo [0/2]

Is skymin Keldeo
[OVERVIEW]
  • Water / Fighting is a good type combination to hit some common pokemon such as Heatran, Kangaskhan, and Landorus-Therian
  • 108 is a decent speed tier for outspeeding base 100’s and some higher speed pokemon such as Mega Kangaskhan, Landorus, and Kyurem-Black.
  • Gets some good utility moves in Icy Wind, Taunt, and Quick Guard.
  • 91 / 90 / 90 are good defensive stats for an offensive mon with it’s typing, ensuring it can live many neutral hits.
  • It’s special movepool off of 129 Special Attack means it can hit most pokemon with strong Hydro Pump’s and Secret Swords.
  • 108 Speed is slow with many of its best checks such as Shaymin-Sky and Tapu Koko easily outspeeding it and KOing it.
  • It has very little coverage to go with its dual STABs.
  • Tapu Bulu, Mega Salamence, Shaymin-Sky, Tapu Koko, Thundurus, and Tapu Lele can either outspeed, or take a hit from it and kill Keldeo back, which is bad since all of these pokemon are really common and good.

Moves
========
  • Hydro Pump is Keldeo’s best STAB attack.
  • Secret Sword is a good coverage option that does damage off of the opponent's physical defense, which lets Keldeo get past Specially Defensive pokemon better. It also has the ability to OHKO Mega Kangaskhan.
  • Icy Wind is a good utility move to lower the speed stats of many of Keldeo’s checks such as Shaymin-Sky and Tapu Koko.
  • Taunt can stop Trick Room setters such as Necrozma and Oranguru from making Keldeo one of the slowest pokemon on the field, as well as other utility such as stopping Leech Seed from Celesteela.
  • Protect can stop an opponent's attack so Keldeo’s partner can beat the pokemon that is attacking Keldeo.
Set Details
========
  • 252 EVs in Special Attack and Speed is to hit as hard as possible while being as fast as possible.
  • Timid nature makes Keldeo as fast as possible so it can speed tie with pokemon like Terrakion and Infernape.
  • Life Orb increases Keldeo’s overall damage to make it hit as hard as possible.
Usage Tips
========

  • Keldeo should be brought in against pokemon it can beat in a favorable match up, but since it is easily worn down from weaker attacks, it shouldn't switch in except against very weak resists and predicted status moves such as taunt.
  • Hydro Pump should be the attack that is used in most scenarios unless Secret Sword generally does more damage or if you are afraid of misses.
  • Icy Wind should generally be used if you predict the switch in of a check or if you want to get some damage off when there is a redirector on the field. Its speed lowering qualities can also be used to slow down fast pokemon such as Choice Scarf Landorus-Therian and Tapu Koko.
  • If what you wanted Keldeo to check has been removed, than the Keldeo should be spamming Hydro Pump to weaken enemy pokemon.
  • Be wary of Hydro Pump's low accuracy, which can make a miss matter in the long run.
Team Options
========

  • Tapu Koko makes for one of Keldeo's best partners. This is due to how Tapu Koko outspeeds and hits fast flying-types such as Shaymin-Sky and Mega Salamence for a lot of damage with its powerful thunderbolts. Tapu Koko also likes Keldeo's ability to remove Ground and Steel-types such as Landorus-Therian and Heatran that resist Tapu Koko's STAB attacks so it can freely spam thunderbolts.
  • Heatran makes for a good partner as well. Heatran can hit the Grass and Fairy-types that beat Keldeo such as Tapu Bulu, Tapu Koko, Amoonguss, and Earth Powerless Shaymin-Sky. All the while Heatran likes having Keldeo to beat Ground types that easily 1v1 it.
  • Mega Salamence appreciates having Keldeo's power to break past its checks such as Landorus-Therian and Heatran to be able to set up Dragon Dances and win matches.
  • Celesteela walls Shaymin-Sky and Tapu Lele, which are two of the biggest threats to Keldeo, while Keldeo beats pokemon like Heatran and other Fire-types.
  • Tapu Lele appreciates Keldeo's ability to beat Dark and Steel types so it can freely spam boosted psychics.

Other Options
=============

  • If you are not running a Tapu Lele on your team and have other priority weak pokemon, Quick Guard can be substituted in the third slot to make the pokemon on your side of the field immune to priority.
  • Waterium-Z can be run over Life Orb, but the loss of power on any move that is not Hydro Vortex is easily noticeable. The Waterium-Z does let Keldeo get a perfect accuracy 180 base power move to be able to 2HKO Aegislash. Waterium-Z with Rain Dance gives Keldeo a +1 Speed boost with Rain boosted Hydro Pumps behind it, which allows it to outspeed Scarfers and its checks.
  • Choice Scarf can be run to boost Keldeo's speed, as it can outspeed all slower scarfers and Deoxys-Attack even when Modest.
  • Scald can be run over Hydro Pump if you want more accuracy and the occasional burn, but Hydro can secure a lot of 2HKO's that Scald can not.
  • Stone Edge can be run to get a sure-kill against Mega Charizard-Y, which's drought can weaken Keldeo's Hydro Pump.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Faster Pokemon**: Many of Keldeo's best checks, such as Shaymin-Sky and Tapu Koko, can easily outpace it and beat while Keldeo can do nothing back.

**Flying-Types**: Many common flying-types, such as Mega Salamence and Shaymin-Sky can easily outspeed and beat Keldeo. Celesteela can also take its attacks and Leech seed Keldeo to beat it.

**Electric-Types**: Tapu Koko and Thundurus are two common pokemon that can easily switch into Keldeo's Secret sword and KO it back.

**Psychic-types**: Tapu Lele, Necrozma, and Cresselia can all easily take a single attack from Keldeo and KO it back, or set up Calm Minds on it.

**Speed Control**: Due to it's awkward speed tier, any sort of speed control can easily mean that Keldeo loses versus many of the pokemon it beats normally, such as Mega Kangaskhan and Landorus-Therian, which can beat or do massive damage to it if Keldeo is slowed down. Keldeo also loses to many of the best Trick Room setters and abusers if Trick Room is up.

**Grass-types**: Shaymin-Sky and Tapu Bulu can easily beat Keldeo by simply clicking their STAB attacks while either outspeeding it or shrugging off its attacks. Amoonguss is a special mention as it can redirect Keldeo's attacks to let a partner set up.

**Fairy-Types**: Many common fairy-types, such as Sylveon and Tapu Lele, can easily kill Keldeo with their STAB's.

**Opposing Weather**: Mega Charizard-Y can set up sun to weaken Keldeo's Hydro Pump and prevent Keldeo from checking it. Many of sun's best abusers, such as Venusaur, can also outspeed it when sun is up and win versus it.

One cool thing Keldeo can do in SM is Z-Rain Dance, which gives it +1 Spe; may come in handy late-game to be faster than Metagross, Gengar, Tapu Koko, Scarf mons, Salamence, and Skymin. If Speed boost is unnecessary, Keldeo can use the same item to turn its Hydro Miss into Hydro Vortex, which would blast through stuff esp in rain :d

I'm not QC but I have 6 months of hindsight on the metagame from when these posts are made.

Here are some things that we have missed the first time around / what is obvious in hindsight. that I think should be mentioned on the analysis.

  • Mentions of Mega Kangaskhan should be removed. Snorlax and Tyranitar should be mentioned instead as something that Keldeo checks.
  • Tapu Fini and Zapdos should be mentioned. They are a large part of the metagame, and the fact that these 2 Pokemon completely stuff Keldeo offensively and hits Keldeo super effectively, makes this Pokemon really difficult to use in any consistent fashion.
  • Teammates section, of course, should reflect this because Keldeo needs a lot of help because there's nothing much Keldeo can do alone against them.
  • Against Snorlax, Sacred Sword's ability to hit from the Physical defense actually becomes a problem because it means that you cannot effectively damage a Cursed up Snorlax, especially one paired with Heal Pulse Tapu Fini.
  • Hoopa is a more relevant TR setter than Oranguru or Necrozma
  • Metagross / Deoxys are more relevant Psychic-types that KO Keldeo than Necrozma and Cresselia.
  • In general the analysis should make it clear that that this Pokemon has big problems in the current metagame. (Hopefully you understand that this is the reason this analysis has been put on the back burner, when we still haven't got anything on Tyranitar and Terrakion.)

I know it does suck for the writer if your work gets 0 feedback and gets ignored, so hopefully if you're still interested we can get something going here!

Tymano are you still interested in writing this? All of marilli's suggestions were good, so if you are, let me know when you're done with them and I'll give this another look.
