[Balanced Hackmons] Mega Latias [QC: 0/3][GP: 0/2]

morogrim

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[OVERVIEW]

. Ability to hold Soul Dew enables Mega Latias to have the benefits of 2 items (Assault Vest and Choice Specs) at the same time with no drawbacks, making it an incredible mixed wall (when combined with Fur Coat) that can also deal heavy damage
. The combination of Soul Dew and Fur Coat enable Mega Latias to be able to take any one hit from Mega Rayquaza and OHKO back with a Dragon-type move, can also switch into Primal Groudon and take up to 2 V-creates and KO back thanks to the drop in Special Defense, also defeats Kyogre as Psystrike ignores Quiver Dance boosts as it hits Kyogre on its weaker defensive side.
. Mega Latias is held back by its bad typing since it is bad both offensively and defensively. While the Dragon typing enables Mega Latias to resist Fire- and Water-type moves, it also makes it weak to Pixilate and Refrigerate users and in general any Fairy- or Ice-type move. Psychic typing also makes Mega Latias extremely vulnerable to the common Dark- and Ghost-type moves (such as Knock Off and Spooky Plate Judgment), and even the common U-turn.
. Despite having a bad typing, Mega Latias can still deal hefty damage to all sorts of walls thanks to Soul Dew and having STAB moves in Spacial Rend and Psystrike, which can hit both physical and special walls respectively.
. Absolutely needs to keep its item as Soul Dew severely cripples both its walling and damaging capabilities and for this reason is extremely weak to Knock Off
. Requires hazard control as chip damage can limit its walling functionality

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

. Psystrike hits specially defensive walls (such as RegenVest Xerneas) and also Quiver Dance users (such as Kyogre) for high damage, especially when coupled with Soul Dew
. Spacial Rend hits Dragon-types such as Giratina and Mega Rayquaza super effectively and also hits any physical wall such as Mega Slowbro for high damage. Dragon Pulse can be used over Spacial Rend for its higher PP as it will enable Mega Latias to effectively stall out recovery moves from walls that stay in, it does have the drawback of not being able to OHKO Primal Groudon after the SpD drop from using V-create
. Recover is used for extra longevity and is required in order for Mega Latias to be able to repeatedly switch into threats such as Primal Groudon
. Volt Switch is used to maintain momentum for the team while doing good damage (thanks to Soul Dew), Magma Storm can be used to have coverage for Steel-type switchins and also Shedinja, Quiver Dance enables Mega Latias to further enhance its wallbreaking capabilities while also being able to outspeed faster threats that come in on a pivot. Refresh may also be used to rid Mega Latias of potential burns from Scald, which would otherwise hinder its walling capabilities against the likes of Primal Groudon

Set Details
========

. 248 HP / 200 Def along with a Bold nature minimizes hazard damage taken while also insuring that Mega Latias survives up to two +1 V-creates from Primal Groudon at full HP
. 60 SpA allows Mega Latias to OHKO max HP Primal Groudon 50% of the time with Spacial Rend after one Special Defense drop
. Soul Dew gives Mega Latias the ability to sponge special attacks from threats such as Kyogre and Mega Mewtwo Y while being able to also deal heavy damage
. Fur Coat enables Mega Latias to become a mixed wall when coupled with Soul Dew and allows Mega Latias to be able to switch into threats such as Primal Groudon

Usage Tips
========

. The main purpose of Mega Latias is checking Primal Groudon, Kyogre, and Aerilate Mega Rayquaza. Mega Latias can switch into Primal Groudon and Kyogre, but be wary that an Aerilate-boosted Boomburst can 2HKO Mega Latias so Mega Latias should be brought in against Mega Rayquaza on a pivot preferably.
. Always scout for potential Knock Off users in the opposing team as even walls sometimes run it as a utility move
. Try to always use Recover after sponging an attack as Mega Latias often needs to be at full HP to be able to function properly, especially against Primal Groudon
. If there are no threats remaining that Mega Latias needs to wall, it can still be used as a wallbreaker. There are very few offensive threats that wouldn't mind taking hits from the Soul Dew-boosted STAB moves coming from Mega Latias

Team Options
========

. Mega Latias requires hazard control support from the team which can be done through either Defog or Rapid Spin. Walls such as Registeel and Giratina can often find the turns to use these moves.
. If not carrying Refresh, Heal Bell support is also highly appreciated by Mega Latias. A Prankster wall such as Aegislash can perform this role very well.
. Mega Latias is still weak to Pixilate and Refrigerate users and even gets 2HKOed by an Aerilate-boosted Boomburst from Mega Rayquaza, and requires support from Steel-type walls such as Registeel
. Pivoting support is also appreciated by Mega Latias as it enables the team to scout for potential Knock Off users

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

. Refresh is another move that can be run on the fourth moveslot which enables Mega Latias to wall Kyogre without having to fear getting burned by Scald. Mega Latias will lose a potential pivoting or coverage move as a result though
. Mega Latias can also run Earth Power over Magma Storm to more reliably defeat Steel walls, but loses the ability to defeat Shedinja in the process

Checks and Counters
===================

**Knock Off**: Knock Off severely cripples Mega Latias as in addition to being super effective, it also removes Soul Dew which is the reason why Mega Latias can wall special attacks so well and also deal good damage.

**Mold Breaker Physical Attackers**: such as Mega Tyranitar and Mega Gyarados can ignore Mega Latias' ability and trap and KO it with a super effective Pursuit.

**Pixilate and Refrigerate Users**: such as Mega Diancie and Kyurem-B can deal heavy damage to Mega Latias despite having Fur Coat and a Soul Dew.

**Steel Walls**: such as Registeel and Aegislash can switch into Mega Latias and take little damage from its STAB moves. They can however get KOed if Mega Latias is running a coverage move.

**Strong Dark- and Ghost-types**: such as Mega Tyranitar and Mega Gengar can deal severe damage to Mega Latias with their super effective moves (Knock Off and Spooky Plate Judgment, respectively).

Overview
  • The overview is a bit long. I'd cut out the specifics about matchups (e.g. "can also switch into Primal Groudon and take up to 2 V-creates and KO back thanks to the drop in Special Defense") and put them in the actual "Set" part of the analysis. In the overview you can just say, for example:
  • Instead of ". The combination of Soul Dew and Fur Coat enable Mega Latias to be able to take any one hit from Mega Rayquaza and OHKO back with a Dragon-type move, can also switch into Primal Groudon and take up to 2 V-creates and KO back thanks to the drop in Special Defense, also defeats Kyogre as Psystrike ignores Quiver Dance boosts as it hits Kyogre on its weaker defensive side."
  • Say "The combination of Soul Dew and Fur Coat enables Mega Latias to take hits from and KO many prominent metagame threats, including Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, and Kyogre" or something like that.
  • . Despite having a bad typing, Mega Latias can still deal hefty damage to all sorts of walls thanks to Soul Dew and having STAB moves in Spacial Rend and Psystrike, which can hit both physical and special walls respectively. This is redundant since you already described the item's benefits earlier.
Set
  • Moves section seems good, except get rid of Refresh here because you already have it in OO.
  • I don't think you need to say that 248 HP minimizes hazard damage
  • In Usage Tips, say some particular walls that often run Knock Off (Magic Bounce Registeel and Mega Audino? idk)
good, sorry for the wait
